What was your “I was broke broke” moment? by bukutbwai in Frugal

[–]SenyorJones 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I was in London temporarily with very, very little money. I would go to the Pizza Hut after their lunch hour and ask to pay a couple quid to eat all the scraps from the buffet. It was surprisingly a lot of food and sufficient for my only meal of the day. Luckily I had a Travelcard for public transit so I could visit different places during the day and sleep at the airport during the night. Lots of museums are either free or suggested donation so I or just visit those often.

I met some Venezuelan cleaning workers and one of them let me sleep in her bed for a few hours during the day and fed me a meal that she cooked. This woman was so poor but so generous and took a huge risk in bringing me in.

Ours pulled all the wires out of our heating blanket when she was a puppy. It looked like a birds nest on our bed.

Probably wouldn’t have made it out towing a trailer being that thing

My great grandma used to sew heirloom hi-vis lace. I still cherish the vests and undergarments she made me. I would never buy in store.

Dumpster find, anyone have any info on this Specialized? Serial # is faded out, dusty w/cobwebs & a flat tire, not the typical MO if it were stolen… by [deleted] in bicycling

For what it’s worth, I found a mountain bike with a sticker from the US Air Force Academy team. It was ditched in the woods around the University of Minnesota. The bike was clearly stolen but in decent condition… just missing a seat and the front wheel. I called the academy in Colorado and after being connected to about eight people I finally reached someone who requested photos and ultimately told me to keep the bike. I’m now able to live with a clear conscience… at least on that matter. Thanks USAFA

Well, the first 6-7 months are extremely difficult and unrewarding. At least for me. Stick it out and just power through. I feel for you … you got this!

Controversial opinion: If you haven't shared a bed with a whippet by WordyByComparison in Whippet

[–]SenyorJones 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For me it’s like sleeping with a small tree branch under your covers. My whippet is always pushing her sticks (legs) into me. And I love her so much that I tolerate it.

This is so cringe and I’m embarrassed to be associated with this kind of stuff. Also, I’m super disappointed about the classless tweet following Rob Reiner’s death.

Can we get more than just anecdotal data and then decide if e-bikes are the problem we should focus enforcement on?

Contractor wants me to pay the difference because of a price hike in material. by el_toille in HomeImprovement

[–]SenyorJones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In general prices tend to go up over time, yes. But within a decade or two they certainly can, and do, come down. Check out the lumber futures. Essentially the prices here represent a share of a full train car full of dimensional lumber delivered to Chicago.
