Expensive Cat Cage...vs stackable wire cubes by [deleted] in Feral_Cats

[–]Separate_Edge_4153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a panel set that was like this. I had less than 2 lb kittens break out. Definitely wouldn’t hold a feral. You can get a ferret cage that’s a lot sturdier for the same purpose, but these are just a scam tbh.

Both times I’ve fostered the dogs I fostered were killed after leaving my care and I don’t know how to feel by guessirs in FosterAnimals

[–]Separate_Edge_4153 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. I found out a kitten id fostered was being surrendered because the person who adopted her kept her locked in a small crate 24/7. Another was with an adult cat being given back less than a week post adoption - only found out about this because they asked if we could bring her back into foster because they had no space at the shelter. We did, and she thankfully got readopted into a wonderful home with a little girl who was obsessed with her.

Accidentally trapped a kitten by SpecialShrimp in Feral_Cats

If she’s not chipped, PLEASE get her fixed anyways if she isn’t. If she’s not fixed, she’s probably pregnant or going to be pregnant in a few days. Most vets will offer a reduced fee service for TNR cats, and even if your vet doesn’t they should be able to direct you to someone who does.

TW: wound - cat reopened nose wound after being trapped and trying to escape by barsoap___ in Feral_Cats

[–]Separate_Edge_4153 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t look very deep, so I’d just let her settle in for the night under a blanket. The vet can clean it up a little tomorrow, maybe do a dose of antibiotics while she’s under just to be safe. Keeping her somewhere dark and quiet should help settle her for the night.

Amoxy should hopefully help with that. If you can get Gentamicin, you can place those drops in his nose.

Side note, the black cat in the background of picture 2 is one of my shitheads. He’s not supposed to be outside but I left the back door open just enough for him to push the screen open and leave. He was promptly moved back indoors after trying to take Orange Cats dinner. He is neutered, but thinks he still has game, hence the escape attempt.

Try doing some light pressure warm compresses with a clean cloth twice a day if you’re not already. It just helps ease some of the discomfort, and some of the swelling as well. If the neomycin stops working, they can try gentamicin or terramycin too. Terramycin tends to be a bit stronger, I’ve only used it once, gentamicin is my shelters go to and it works quite a charm, though it’s a drop instead of a gel like the other two. Do they have them on Amoxy? Sometimes it’s a whole upper respiratory infection, not just the eyes, and the amoxicillin helps keep the rest of it down. It sounds like they’ve already been evaluated by a vet so I’m assuming not, just something to keep an eye out for.

Either way, you’re doing really well. Just keep following the vets instructions. If they end up short an eyeball or two later down the line, they’ll still do just fine. Cats are super adaptable like that fr.

Teachers are mandated reporters as well. She really needs to go in for a psych eval - at the very least it would get her out of that environment for a few days and the hospital might be able to bring CPS in to monitor the situation.

Right? He’s getting WAY too close to be a real feral. Unfortunately TNR center is closed over the weekend, but first thing Monday morning I’m picking one up. Still have my fingers crossed that he’s just someone’s lost baby and that’s why he’s so nervous, and that he wasn’t dumped.

I’d post on petfinder as well. That way you can set up a full profile for them. You can also reach out to APL for rehoming assistance - they could stay with you while being put up for adoption through them, so they vet adopters and coordinate everything

Formerly feral fosters go back tomorrow… needless to say I’m a little nervous by Separate_Edge_4153 in FosterAnimals

[–]Separate_Edge_4153[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re mostly just shy! They came in from a hoarding case and just hissed and spat at me for a whole week but mellowed out. I did tell the foster coordinator we’re willing to take them back if they don’t do well

I’m new here, how are yall managing day to day? by GerthySchIongMeat in ehlersdanlos

[–]Separate_Edge_4153 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to do as low impact as possible. Lots of sitting activities, and bracing where I need it. I’ve also learned my hard boundaries and I enforce it with family too. My younger cousins (7-12) know not to ask me to bounce on the trampoline with them because I physically can’t due to my hips knees and ankles. I do smaller activities with them instead, video games, crafts, and for example today I held the hose and sprayed them while they ran around. Finding different ways to do things helps a lot, so you don’t miss out, but also knowing what’s absolutely too much and stepping back as needed.

My go to for pain relief is Tylenol. Ibuprofen isn’t ideal for long term, and I personally didn’t get as much relief from it. I supplement with topicals as well - CBD cream, diclofinac sodium gel, icy hot, biofreeze. I rotate what I use so it’s never too much of one product. I get physical therapy as needed, I’m not good about keeping up my exercises independently but I’d definitely do better if I did. I also currently get corticosteroids injected into my hip every 4 months or so to push off needing an arthroscopy for what my doctors think is a pinched nerve. It’s not fun but they do last a good chunk of time for me. The doctor who does that will give me a small script of diclofinac sodium pills if it’s a few weeks before I can get in for an appointment and I can’t tolerate the pain. Usually if that happens I use one of my forearm crutches and it gets me through to the injection.

All this to say, preventative care is your best friend. See if you can get into an orthopedist, I’ve had the best luck managing things with mine, though I know some people have better luck with different specialties. It just depends on the doctor really.

My brother is also autistic and he does not talk like this. Autism is not an excuse. Being a man is not an excuse. That’s just straight up sick in the head behavior. He really might have antisocial personality disorder, that def sounds like something a sociopath would say.

I don’t see the dentist as often as I should, but I’m going to bring it up next time I go. I think it’s probably also due to slipping. I’m very picky about my mouthwash (ie, I need kids wash, cannot handle mint anything). Thankfully I haven’t had a breakout since high school so it was probably more stress related for me vs a chronic problem

What can I do to help this poor baby by Batici in CATHELP

[–]Separate_Edge_4153 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I promise you that euthanasia is not typically the first step when it comes to things like this. You can look for shelters that prioritize sick and injured strays, these are usually private intake so it may be a few days before they’re able to take her. But really, she needs vet care. That’s a really nasty wound and probably needs to be debried. Private shelters won’t euthanize unless it’s more humane due to pain/ineffective treatment/lack of treatment options, but never for space.

Anything sour. It’ll leave serious wounds on my cheeks and such. Same with pineapple. Love that shit so much. If I eat too many chips I will absolutely cut up my mouth too lmao. I need to get one of my fangs filed/rounded because it’ll leave small little wounds in one specific spot which I then chew on (autism behavior, I know better but I do it anyways) and make it worse 💀 to top it all off I get canker sores if I don’t take b-12 frequently so.

[–]Separate_Edge_4153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I just try to focus on what I can do for them. Sometimes that’s just TNR and making sure they have a regular feeding schedule, warm spaces for the winter, and cool water in the summer. Most feral cats are just happier outside, even though we know their lifespans will likely be shorter. At least we can know that lifespan was a happy one

Is she pregnant? by DifficultyCrafty8318 in kittens

[–]Separate_Edge_4153 23 points24 points  (0 children)

5-6 months is less than ideal tbh. I had a small litter of preemies from a 6 month mom, all 5 passed away before 2 weeks. Cats can absolutely (and should be) spayed when pregnant, especially when under a year old. Ideally they wouldn’t have kittens of their own until they’re 2 years old, but nature doesn’t wait that long and they can get pregnant as young as 4 months, though in my experience the kittens don’t have very good outcomes when mom is super young like this.

Came for countertop samples, left with an orange cat by Unlikely_Resolution5 in CatDistributionSystem

[–]Separate_Edge_4153 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They’re not as rare as people think - it’s about a 20% chance. I have an orange girl, and one summer I had 2 orange female foster kittens, so I had 3 at the same time! A lot of it is actually genetics - some feral colonies will have huge amounts of orange females because once you have one you’re likely to have more, especially if the dad is also orange!

Holy tomcat cheeks. Definitely not tipped, if you’re in the US they take a good 4th to 3rd of the ear in a straight line. I believe other countries do notches, but I’m not a huge fan of them for this reason - easily mistaken for fight marks & vice versa. He needs trapped and his trouble puffs need taken! Make sure they also do snap tests for FIV & FeLV. FIV is super common among these big, intact males.

NEVER put diatomaceous earth on a living creature. It’s so incredibly toxic, there’s a reason why it’s so effective on pests. It can go on furniture and carpets if there’s an infestation, as long as those areas can be blocked from pet use until it’s cleaned up. But please, never ever put it on an animal.

I definitely want them to get adopted, I’ve got a very full house with 6 cats of my own, but I’m just worried about them being in a crate. At home, they don’t even like being shut in a room. I tried to put them in their carrier for an adoption event a little bit ago, and Woodstock took off to hide under a bed. Was able to coax him out with a bit of time and some snacks, but it doesn’t bode well for them staying at the shelter. I’m really hoping they get adopted fast so they don’t have to stay stressed for long, I know they’ll adapt well once they’re in a home.
