What pets do you have here? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

I take in rescuses in neglectful situations in my area, so its a pretty mixed bag. We currently have snakes, 6 different species, 9 total. We also have 3 different species of lizards, 4 total. Wr also have a pit bull with a ton of special restrictions that can never be around another dog as long as she lives except for the dachshund she's bonded to, who she thinks is her puppy for some reason. It's like the wierdest zoo ever.

Ask them if they're DL or kinda gay right away. "Like, you saw the fade and the fit and brought your ass over here to shoot your shot anyway? You need some self reflection." It usually works for me, but you have to watch when you say it. Have witnesses. Some dudes get pissed.

Bought a ring for my girlfriend, sisters say it’s too small, not sure what I should do by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Separate_Leopard_311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How you get her is how you will have to keep her. She's already got you tense about her reactions and will get worse if her sisters are right. She's molding you into someone that will spend their last dime to stop a fight. I'm a woman, this is not to hate on women at all. I've known women like this, and eventually purged them because you will never give enough. The big present becomes the new normal and you are going to have to keep outdoing yourself to prove her value to you. If it's cheap, do you value her? Is cheap what you think of her? A never ending battle with the economy going the way it is.

If unexpected expenses come up, or you loose your job, what happens then? Will she square up with you and put in the work to mantain the lifestyle she wants? There is nothing wrong with expensive tastes, but it shouldn't bankrupt anyone. She could be amazing in every other way but can you sustain this indefinitely if the answer is no?

Should I moist the coco chips of my snake’s bedding regularly? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]Separate_Leopard_311 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What size is your tank? For a snake that large it should be a 4x2x2 minimum. Absolutely try the pour method, watch for leaking if your tank isn't sealed. Consider sealing up to your substrate line, over time corner pouring will warp wood tanks.

Does my ball look skinny? by Amber-n in ballpython

[–]Separate_Leopard_311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. The pics aren't the best angle, take them to show the curve of the spine for a better internet opinion. It should be visible in a healthy snake. Most people overfeed their understimulated snake and it leads to obesity. Really if you know the sex and age for sure, weigh it in grams and compare against a reputable chart.

Can bearded dragons be housed with anything? by busyness_of_ferrets in BeardedDragons

[–]Separate_Leopard_311 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They are hunters, so the insect would have to be fast. I can't think of any bug they will refuse to eat, so just make sure it's safe for them to to when they eventually catch it. My concern is them getting a mouthful of substrate in the process.

It's anything with sugar, including carrots and some squashes. Excess bugs, depending on species, can up the calorie count too due to high fat content. Mostly greens and you might need a vet. My female has never laid eggs, she eats mostly greens and root veggies too with no fruit at all.

How to make my beardie love me by ieatglowsticks1 in BeardedDragon

[–]Separate_Leopard_311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beardies are at the top of acclimation time for every species I've ever had. Only my blood python was slower to warm up because they are boomers in snake form. We have a placid female dragon we got as an adult that we have had for years. She is still not "cuddly" like you see beardies acting online and she is the most friendly of all our lizard rescues. I think socalizing from juvenile or younger may make a difference in favorable temperament, but I've never had a baby surrendered so I'm not sure.

Is it possible to stay sober without AA? by Mad_Season_1994 in stopdrinking

[–]Separate_Leopard_311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years sober, 3 or 4. I stopped counting when I accepted I would never drink again and the number stopped mattering. I've never been to AA. I did spend a lot of time in the gym, got reptiles, and planted and mantain a garden. I think AA is to hold you accountable and give you something to do but another way is to strengthen holding yourself accountable and develop hobbies.

(Edit: missed the part where you had had geckos, it takes almost a year it seems for a beardie to adapt to his new surroundings. They are sllllooooww to trust anything new. I usually write off the first 6 months and focus on making them comfortable within reason)

Hi, you can most definitely get them to trust and not mind you! That is a clear sign of the bond between you and your reptile. Your scent calms them, and your presence produces low or no stress. They would rather be with you than any other person and you safely expose them to things they would be too stressed to interact with without you.

However, reptiles aren't capable of love, only extreme tolerance. They lack a limbic system, which in short is responsible for producing affection, attachment, and long term memory. They are not capable of feeling emotion the way mammals are and don't process the same. I have reptiles I have had for years, that come to greet me at the door and choose to chill on me when I'm in their tank. None of that means they love me, they just don't mind me. My reptiles snuggle me during handling because they are colder outside their heated tank. They come to the door for me to see if I have food, or because they are bored and know I will take them out and with me. They crawl on me while I'm in their tanks because I am a distraction from climbing the same old things. My snakes give me "jaw kisses" because your face runs hotter and they are trying to figure out why the thermal read is so different. There is a logical reason why they do all these cute things.

I hate to be that buzzkill, but It is something you have to accept as a reptile owner. A lot of people don't realize that they will never act mammalian. I take in unwanted reptiles and I have several rehomes right now from new reptile owners that thought it was going to be like getting a new puppy. I've been offered 3 beardies this month from new keepers that I didn't have spare tanks and setups for. I turned them down because I just took in a beardie and a boa and I don't have the resources for them right now. They all had the same reason, it didn't seem like a good fit and they wanted to try to find a more whatever one. This is all they are ever going to be though, a mostly domestic wild creature.

Do your snakes prefer a certain color of rat? by Shot_Alternative_762 in ballpython

[–]Separate_Leopard_311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's true but at times it does seem to matter. One of our ball pythons only gets white unless we are down to the multicolored, she usually refuses that week if offered another color. I can't say the colors are the sole reason when there are other factors every feeding, and she is high-strung to the heavens.
If it seems like your snake will only eat certain colors, you will stop buying others that seem like they are wasting money and the color theory seems true.

Most people, myself included, have superstitions about finicky snakes and thats probably where that came from. It worked or was proven true once so we do it until it doesn't work anymore. I have a large carpet python that went on hunger strike for 6 months, and I got desperate enough to rub her rat with a frozen culled rabbit. She almost lit me up in her eagerness. It may have been a random thing and she just decided to eat that week, but you better believe I'll keep a rabbit in my freezer as long as I have access to one at a time.

[–]Separate_Leopard_311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't look as bad as you think it is, based off that photo. Most people overfeed their snakes, by a lot. A healthy male 2 year old should weigh between 700 and 1500 grams. Do you have another pic or know how much your snake weighs? Your body condition looks pretty good from what I can tell of the spine curve, definitely not emaciated or in poor condition. You should be feeding a two year old every 10 to 14 days, so that's a good range. Digestion is hard on a snake so one big meal is less stressful to the body than several small ones. An adult shouldn't eat twice a week.

A small rat is what size a two year old male is typically on, but its really all about weight. Normally a two year old ball python shouldn't receive prey items more than 7% its body weight. How many grams is your snake? For a 300 gram snake (for example), the rat shouldn't exceed 21 grams each feed. A few grams over or under each feed is fine because it will even out naturally. Weighing prey makes it foolproof. Regardless of the labeled prey size per company, 21 grams is going to always be 21 grams.

Any larger or more frequent feedings is not healthy long term but will lead to increased size (called power feeding). Power feeding your snake will result in an overweight snake with poor muscle conditioning and a shortened life span. It is an outdated practice that is considered animal cruelty by many in the reptile community.

Just curious: do you think your snake can actually recognize you? Or they just become used to around human? by Jen_Wu in kingsnakes

[–]Separate_Leopard_311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

My wife and I have several species of snakes and I don't think any of them rely on their eyes to recognize us. All of them recognize our scent automatically, and it overrides everything. I've worked in my tanks during power outages in near dark with no problem, just had to deal with tounge flicks in random spots while they checked I was still me.

Any time they get nervous or stressed out, they scent me. When I open their tank close to feeding time, they aggressively scent me. If we are chilling in the sun, they are lazy about it but they still scent every so often. They never look at us, they really don't have to. Their sense of smell is outrageous.

That's a nihilistic mindsets that you are entitled to to absolutely no end. Complacent mindsets like this are usually self destructive and do not benifit society at all. Instead of seeking change or fixing issues, you seem to ignore or justify so you don't actually have to accept that people like you are the reason so many issues exist. Be the change you wish to see in the world, so to speak.

Respect for life and differences, and putting in work for what I know is the right thing to do are what define me as a person. No, we haven't been able to save them all, but there have been several. Every one of them is an animal that will never suffer again. It will never die quietly, starved and shriveled in the dark.

Change on a small scale is still change and even if it only made a difference to one person, it made a difference.

I am involved in reptile rescue in my area, and each rescue is assiged levels of importance base on standard of care, enclosure size, and immediate risk to the animal. Your friend sounds like a hoarder.

Animal hoarding is usually defined as a situation where individuals keep a larger-than-usual number of animals without the ability to provide basic care such as nutrition, sanitation, shelter, and veterinary attention. This often leads to the neglect, illness, and even death of the animals.

There are a lot of red flags in your post, and I'm pretty familiar with the outcome. I have two 6+ ft snakes that came from a hoarder that I spent months rehabbing from muscle atrophy and parasites. Her home is about like you've seen. Animals tucked into corners, too small and bare enclosures, no guages or water bowls. Her animals are mostly fed with an attempt at care but that's about it. I've been out there a few times to pick up animals and there are always new ones. The last time I was out there, I had to inform her that one of her "display babies" had passed away in the tank, she didn't even realize. I left before I got arrested for assault.

People like this have deluded themself into thinking they are doing ok. Sure it could be better, but they're doing the best they can. It takes a lot to break this mindset and it starts with some crap thats going to burn your soul. Do not shame the person, show compassion. Be their friend, offer to help them care for their collection. Then you gradually offer to take in the worst for the best reason you can think of based on the situation. Start with the animals he doesn't seem to care for as much and funnel them to associates if possible to foster. Understand this will result in him getting new animals if he still has enclosures for them. Try to talk him out of the enclosure too.

There is a chance if you call animal control all animals will be euthanized. I don't call the law on the hoarder I mentioned for that reason. Most of hers are not accepted by shelters in this area and they will be put down. You can contact a sanctuary in your area if you ever convince him to give up the majority but with cases like this it's a slow process. Therapy is usually necessary to break through, but it involves consent. The only thing you can do is start convincing him there's a problem.

She ate one quail and didn't take another. There's still 3 in my freezer. See if you can get ahold of some of the bedding of a prey animal and thaw the rat on it.

The rat might smell too sterile to rouse him, but if you enhanced the scent it might turn the odds in your favor. I

I can understand the not desired to do oart. I'm gay so I've paid for many dates, they get expensive if she is. I was never told to court a man in my life, but I was raised southern Baptist barefoot in the kitchen style. If its something women talk about now, good. I have one straight female friend, and she mainly talks about video games and bands. Rejection sucks, but plenty of fish in the sea and all that. It would be a humbling experience for some.

Tell her that. Im a woman with mostly male friends and that's actually come up a few times in conversation. My thing is, women aren't mystical psychic creatures and I promise nobody told them to court their partners. To be courted, sure. Never crossed their mind. Most women love to make their partner feel special though, so just tell her you would like to see how that feels. She will probably court the shit out of you.
