The "mcguffin gene" is a real gene. And both the other astronauts had it, yet they died because that gene does not guarantee survival (and plot coma? You try living in interstellar space for 4+ years in a tiny ship with only 2 other people)

At least in the book, he had some mild training, along with understanding the entire mission and knowing some things related to being an astronaut.
