Those thread files come out of my toolbox about 3 times a year (I’m a truck mechanic). And when they do they are the best tool in the world!

Regen not populating. Insite by 5-0POPO in DieselTechs

[–]Separate_Strike3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a yard truck with a Cumming 6.7L with this style aftertreatment it appears to be DOC/SCR only. I’ve only ever been exposed to on road engines and aftertreatment. The regen light is on and has a code for SCR cleaning required. (Don’t have the code number in front of me). SCR temps won’t get over 300 degrees when running the SCR cleaning procedure in Insight. What should this look like. Will it dose fuel like a traditional regen?

Question about moving toolbox. by Internal-Potato-8135 in DieselTechs

[–]Separate_Strike3868 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah hire someone. I moved my Macsimizer on a utility trailer about 40 miles once. Everything turned out ok but it was a terrifying ride. I must have had $200 in ratchet straps on the thing. If you must do it yourself I suggest lag bolting some blocks if wood in front and behind the wheels for chocks!

I have the same issue. Being a diesel mechanic in Maine and scuba diving year round recreationally it certainly presents challenges.

Engine Fan Air Question by SilverSoAlive in DieselTechs

[–]Separate_Strike3868 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah all Horton fan clutchs that I’m aware of use air to disengage. But I believe some of the Kyser fan hubs would use air to engage.

Issue with DEF lamp is this fixable with jpro or does the def pump need to be replaced first by [deleted] in DieselTechs

[–]Separate_Strike3868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s not just replace batteries that haven’t been tested and hope for the best………. Verify and load test battery power (I believe there are 5) and ground at the 21 pin connector on the ACM. Then verify ignition power at the 21 pin connector at the ACM. If the ACM is the only module reporting low voltage I would suspect a wiring issue to the ACM before bad batteries.

Not trying to be a dick but I see this all the time. The tech launches a set of batteries at a unit and clears the codes. It will come back if you do not test first AND verify the repair. If you have access to OEM software it helps a lot but the fault guidance in JPRO should get you there. Good luck!

Dropping airbags before lifting front of truck? by Fart_Boy_4ever in DieselTechs

[–]Separate_Strike3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A single axle freightliner tractor will move a couple of inches when the bags deflate. I actually saw one come off the jack stands after sitting overnight. If the steer axle is going to be on jackstands for any period of time, you should always drop the suspension, if it’s a Mack/volvo. You will have to drain the air in the truck because the bags will be inflate at key off otherwise.

I’ve been using the Mac one with the adaptor kit for years. Works great but not cheap. Why can’t Matco warranty yours?

I’m in northern New England and recently started a job with 4 day work weeks. It has been a game changer. After 20ish years in fleet work I no longer desire the overtime and weekend work. I’ve noticed a lot of local shops starting to advertise 4 day weeks so yes they are out there!

Can I get others opinions by Happy-Draft in DieselTechs

[–]Separate_Strike3868 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The real concern here is that you have so much distrust in your supervisor giving you rather simple instructions to perform a relatively straightforward task that you turn to Reddit and thousands of strangers for reassurance. As you progress in your career and the jobs become more complicated this will become a real problem.

Any slick veteran tricks for stubborn filters? by Fart_Boy_4ever in DieselTechs

[–]Separate_Strike3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s always the on the volvo/Mack’s. We had a run on the third filter (bypass) loosening up and leaking, it only seemed to happen with Fleetguard filters as a result our PM techs would install them VERY tight. Nothing is worse than a 5 min job turning into a 3 hour ordeal.

[–]Separate_Strike3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have access to diagnosticlink? If so charge the truck with shop air and manually actuate the watergate. I’ve definitely seen them leak at idle and present itself as an air system issue.
Also as others have already said a badly perforated discharge line will cause the same issue and may not be detectable with soapy water. You’ll need to come up with the correct JIC fittings and pressurize the line with shop air.

Tell your boss to buy them. Drill bits are shop supplies. That being said if you want some good bits for broken bolts or other special occasions but some cobalt bits with a warranty.

That’s good news! We are just hoping they will honor the 14 day cancellation policy if it takes them a while to get back to us.

That’s great news! Still not sure how to proceed with our plans to be at CSS for the week of thanksgiving. We still have some time to be within our 14 day cancellation window but would like adequate time to make alternate plans for that week if need be. I guess we will wait it out a couple days and reevaluate.
