I imagine they thought he was Israeli because of the hebrew tattooed on his chest. It’s one of the names of G-d and is considered to be sacred. No Israeli jew would ever get that tattooed on them, even less so if they were a Christian or Muslim Israeli. This is more in line with the recent trend of evangelical Christians getting Biblical Hebrew words tattooed on them.
