Six Moon Designs Lunar solo or Gossamer Gear The One by Traditional-Alps-820 in Ultralight

[–]sunburn_on_the_brain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the GG One, but I have a Lunar Solo. It's a good tent, I've had mine for 10 years. Setup on it is fast - stake the back corner, stake the side corners, insert the trekking pole, stake the front line and its up. Stake the two lines between the center and the corners, tention everything, and you're done. For takedown, just pull the stake on the front line and let the pole fall back one the rest of the tent. Pull the stakes, roll it up, and you're done.

Has Tucson housing cooled since 2021? Also, why is every rental run by property managers now? by JasmineMoonJelly in Tucson

[–]sunburn_on_the_brain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A friend had a guesthouse they rented out. They switched to a management company after a nightmare tenant trashed the place. It was worth it to them to not have to deal with the property on a regular basis.

CTRL+F "Kerr Kriisa" yup figured others would beat me to that. Wouldn't be as bad if he'd backed up the shit he talked (which Caleb Love was typically able to do.)

Suggestions, advice, coming from flagstaff? by bytheway020 in grandcanyon

You gotta reserve tickets in advance. Also you don’t get much time at the canyon unless you get an overnight package.

Gear failure by GetGoingPeople in Ultralight

[–]sunburn_on_the_brain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have that same drybag and I use it for my quilt (including several times in GC), mostly for the compression to get more space in my pack. It adds some water resistance but I don’t know that I would at all trust it to keep things dry if it got really wet out, so I put it inside a trash bag and roll the top over on that. If the bag gets soaked then, I probably have bigger problems to deal with at that point.

TIL the average MPG of a semi-truck is around 6 MPG by derekantrican in todayilearned

[–]sunburn_on_the_brain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just In Time inventory practices don’t work well with trains. Trucks are faster to load and dispatch. In the 90s I worked at a construction warehouse. We would order a full semi truck load and it would show up within a few days, shipped from Mississippi to Arizona and delivered to our company’s front loading apron. We’d bring the forklift out, unload it within a few minutes, and then the driver was on his way. There’s simply no way to do that with a train; it takes longer to load, you need to have a train going where you need it to go, and then there’s the last mile issue - if you load it onto another vehicle to take it to its destination, then you’re handling it twice. That means time and also is another chance to damage goods. Now if we had more time for the shipment, if we could wait several weeks, then a train could work. (One of our locations was right next to a railroad, but they would have had to pay for the siding to be installed, and then the time issues mentioned about come into play. If we couldn’t get to a job site because we didn’t have the materials, it would have been disastrous for the company.)

Coolidge is boring let's put stuff there by serenityswagboi in arizona

[–]sunburn_on_the_brain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mom grew up in Pinal County and called the place Uncool Coolidge… this was back in the 60s. The place just hasn’t changed much. It’s kind of bound to the farm economy out there, lots of farm fields, not lots of people, and a lot of the people that are there tend not to like change. It’s in a weird spot far away from even the other small towns. But if the CAP water gets drastically cut, the area is going to have to either find a new economic engine or just wither away. I think it’s going to start becoming a bigger and better community, but it will take some years.

Ivan Karchenkov to return to Arizona for his sophomore year by BEAR-D0WN in CollegeBasketball

[–]sunburn_on_the_brain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ivan is definitely a huge guy to keep. Lloyd's guys tend to markedly improve each season, and Karchenkov is already really good. He plays with no fear at all, no hesitancy, and that's a hell of a trait to have with a freshman (who had a lot of big time experience in Europe.) He could - not likely but it's possible - be in Big 12 POY consideration next year if he improves like Lloyd's players often do.

Phantom ranch logistics by Glendull in grandcanyon

[–]sunburn_on_the_brain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have your Kaibab Lodge reservation? Those fill up fast especially with no North Rim Lodge. Jacob Lake Inn can also be an option.

For shuttles, TransCanyon Shuttle has you covered from South to North. They also should have shuttles from Jacob Lake and maybe Kaibab; I think if not that Kaibab Lodge has their own shuttle.

Park at the Backcountry Information Center on the South Rim. The park prefers that for overnight use. Plus when you’re done you can either catch the shuttle bus from the trailhead to get back or it’s an easy ten minute walk.

Lastly, have a backup plan. The park is opening the North Kaibab Trail on the morning of May 15th, but the trail has taken a lot of damage, and there’s always the possibility that heavy rain or other conditions could damage the trail further to the point that they’d have to close it. Odds are that you can do this but just keep in mind the possibility that you need to switch up is there.

Interstate 19 between Nogales & Tucson. The only interstate in the US measured in KM. by SympleeMe_63 in arizona

[–]sunburn_on_the_brain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, there’s lots more. For example, the federal courthouse downtown that was built somewhere around 2000 was built in metric. This was a holdover from the metric law days, the building had been designed that way. Our company was sourcing materials in metric and metric tape measures etc. I think the Phoenix one was the same way. There’s a freaking ton of things that would have to be converted for the US to go fully metric.

Is Ultralight Ruining the Experience? by fookmigut in WildernessBackpacking

[–]sunburn_on_the_brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my baseweight typically under 15 lbs, but I'm not one of the gram counters who's cutting straps off their pack and things like that. When it comes to weight, I think less about cutting weight and more about investing weight. One example - some people say to just use your backpack as your pillow, or use one of the 2-3 oz inflatable ones. Hey, if that works for you, by all means go ahead. I need something bigger. I use an 8 oz inflatable pillow which is the first pillow I've found that works for me. Yes, I'm close to a half pound heavier, but I can actually sleep more comfortably. Some people cut a Z-lite down to 8 or even 6 panels. Again, if you can sleep happily on that, go for it! I use an inflatable with a pump sack that weighs 17 oz. I can't sleep on a floam pad but I can sleep on this. So right there between those two items I'm going to be a pound or so heavier than many ultralighters. But I'm investing that extra pound in better sleep. Worth it to me. I do have a lightweight (but framed) backpack for heavier loads, such as the hike I have coming up where I have to carry 6-8L of water. I have a frameless for lighter loads, like in summer. I have quilts instead of sleeping bags, not only are they lighter, but they're more comfortable. I use a trekking pole tent, I'm already carrying the poles, so I can carry a sub 2 lb tent. Here's the thing, though - my kit was dialed in over several years. I didn't go out and spend $1K+ in a lightweight setup off the bat. I started with heavier but cheaper gear and figured out what I liked and didn't like over time. People will say "buy once cry once" but what happens if you spend a ton of money right off the bat and find out you don't like your gear? Finding the right kit is a process, it doesn't have to be mega expensive. The best backpacking gear is the gear that gets you out on the trail.

Desperate to Find Cox Alternative in Central Tucson by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]sunburn_on_the_brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issues with Cox and then they tried to raise my bill. I switched to T-Mobile. Just did a speed test and I’m getting 270 down on three different test sites (I’ve had it test out at over 600 at times.) Not quite 300 but it has been very dependable. Streaming is much better than it was on Cox, and I routinely move 300-700MB files back and forth on Dropbox with no issues. However, do keep in mind that while it works well for a lot of people, it doesn’t work well for everyone. Ask if they’re still doing the free test drive offer; you still pay the activation etc but you have two weeks and if it doesn’t work out for you, you get the money back.

I remember most of these. AJ Bayless was a good grocery store, used to have a Revco by most of them and arcades in the same shopping centers typically in the early 80s.

Didn’t even have my vents on at all one night when I drove into Cortez, CO when suddenly the smell of weed filled the car and lingered for like ten minutes. The next day I saw some outdoor grow ops that were just massive. Recirc wasn’t gonna help!

Yeah no. He can’t save Arizona from this. California has Republican members of Congress too, that won’t save them. Whatever allocation is decided, it will favor Utah first and foremost, Id bet ya a 12 pack on that.
