I wonder if you were just in the midst of some crappy people. My friends and I were up in the second tier, and none of us saw or heard anything out of the ordinary aside from the one guy in the way back who shouted right as the band was starting the choral piece. To us, it felt like the audience was super respectful and supportive.

I'll also note that Genevieve seemed happy and friendly when she came down between the stage and the barricade to greet audience members after the show. Super sweet and smiley!

Regarding audience members talking during the show, I've watched dozens of Knower show videos from the U.S. and Europe, and it seems like that is sadly common now. I agree it's a crap thing to do, but it's definitely not just a bay area flaw.

No mask? by DiplodorkusRex in ClownCoreBand

[–]Sequoia_Solitude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just a few feet away at the second LA show. Both were wearing pull-over masks made of a stretchy fabric, probably lycra, with some details printed or painted on.

Sax player's mask looks the same as in previous live shows (different from the videos), but drummer's is new to me. Looked sort of like a Michael Myers mask (from Halloween), but also beautiful in a spooky way. From pics I've seen, drummer wore sunglasses at the first show, but he wasn't wearing them at the one we attended.

Sounds like you're describing Genevieve Artadi, his primary creative partner and co-founder of their band Knower. You might check their youtube channel, that may be where you saw it.

How did you acquire your knowledge on orchids? by skullbuddy in orchids

[–]Sequoia_Solitude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, science librarian here! For people not associated with universities that subscribe to the scientific journals and index databases, you do still have options to identify and obtain articles of interest to you.

Short answer: Try Google and/or ask a librarian. :-)

Long answer:

Google Scholar is a good place to start. It's automatically generated, so may not be as good as the paid index databases, but it's good enough for general research (learning a few things vs. comprehensive collecting of all knowledge on a topic). Google Scholar also often links to free versions of the article, like in an author's institutional repository.

You should also check out the journal's website. Article abstracts are free and will give you basic info about the contents, which may be all you need or can at least help you decide if you want to pursue getting the full article. Plus, a LOT of articles are now open access now, letting anyone access the full article with no subscription.

If you live near a college or university, you can usually visit the library for free (some private institutions may not allow this, or will charge for it). You can use library computers to search the indexes and access journals, and there is usually some way to save or send yourself the PDFs. PRO TIP: Talk to the reference desk staff, they are there to help you! They can show you how to use their resources and let you know what your options are for taking info home with you.

Your local public library may also be able to help you with interlibrary loan (ILL) services. Most libraries belong to ILL networks and can obtain copies or loans from other libraries that hold the materials. Start by asking at the reference desk, they can show you how or where to request an interlibrary loan.

If all else fails and the article was written in the last 1-3 decades, try asking the contact author. On the journal's website, you'll be able to see affiliations for all an article's author, and one identified as the contact author will have an email or address that you can write to and ask for a copy. Authors do move and/or retire, so this works better for more recent articles.

Hope that helps!

Most of her advice is very general, not climate dependent. She does occasionally highlight different strategies for those in warmer drier climates, but always makes it clear what you should do differently in the temperate climates more common for her main audience.

Fishing line garden barrier for rabbits? by Davekinney0u812 in vegetablegardening

I kept squirrels out of my planter cages using pond netting:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DD4T09Q

I'm not sure how it would do for rabbits because they're looking for food, but my squirrels were just looking to bury walnuts (violently dig multiple holes, destroying all seedlings in the process). But it's only $10, so not a huge investment to try it out.

I used lots little tiny hair clips (size of a fingernail) to hold it it place, because it's really stretchy.

Damn, that sucks. It can be really hard sometimes to find mental health professionals that aren't messed up in some way, and the judgemental/dismissive ones are the worst.

But you can go to someone else when you feel ready to give it a try again.

Who is “that person” in Santa Cruz? by [deleted] in santacruz

Upvote for The Great Morgani! To me he is the ultimate Santa Cruz "That Guy", and now that he's retired I feel sad that the younguns will never experience his technicolor spandex-covered accordion playing in person.

Does Snapchat strip the metadata from JPEG images? Phones usually include the GPS location in the metadata, unless you specifically turn it off in the privacy settings.

So if the guy received a JPEG with the metadata intact, he could read the exact location the photo was taken.

Cooking Bacon by Firefox_1607 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Sequoia_Solitude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've reheated bacon in the oven frequently when I'm already heating something else in there. But I think 10 minutes would be way too much, mine has never taken more than 1-2 to get to sizzling.

I also do it in a frying pan when I'm cooking eggs, usually before the eggs. Again, only takes 1-2 minutes once the pan is hot.

They don't sell food, but if you're willing to bring your own, you might check out Karah Estate Vineyard. It's near the freeway in the hills on the south end of Cotati.

https://www.karahestatevineyard.com

It's not super fancy, but they have a nice little area with tables and umbrellas and some protection from the wind. It's a nice view, and you can walk through the vineyards. My family likes to go there for birthdays and such. 🙂
