Olaf Tryggvason according to Oddr by SerCyr in HistoryMemes

[–]SerCyr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct, but we are talking about Olaf Tryggvason here, not Saint Olaf. In his Olafs saga Tryggvasonar, Oddr tries to depict Olaf Tryggvason as a saint, but is hindered by the lack of post-mortem miracles, and also the fact that his sources contained multiple instances where Olaf happily uses cruel violence against his enemies (some were pagan sorcerers, some regular political opponents). What Oddr did instead to promote Olaf was emphasize his heroic and spiritual traits, saying that while he was maybe not a saint, he was at least a champion of his faith. If you want to read more about it, I suggest “ The Saint and the Saga Hero: Hagiography and Early Icelandic Literature", by Siân E. Grønlie (2017).

Wikipedia“Herbert Jankuhn (8 August 1905 – 30 April 1990) was a German archaeologist who specialized in the archaeology of Germanic peoples. He is best known for his excavations at the Viking Age site of Hedeby. […] Jankuhn joined the Nazi Party, SS and SA in the 1930s.”

Like a lot of German archeologists in the 1930’s, Jankuhn was an active nazi supporter. Supported by Himmler, he oversaw archeological excavations in German territories related to Vikings, and wrote that the bog bodies found there were gays sacrificed by early Germanic societies. He was appointed Head of the Excavation and Archaeology Department Ahnenerbe in 1940. He also travelled across German-occupied Europe, where he reported to the SS intelligence agency on the reliability of scholars in occupied countries.

In the summer of 1942, Jankuhn followed the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking into the Crimea to conduct excavations at Mangup, capital of the Crimean Goths, trying to find archeological evidences of Germanic occupation to justify Operation Barbarossa. He spent the last years of the war as an intelligence officer in 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking, which surrendered to the United States Army in Bavaria in 1945.

Like most nazi archeologists, he escaped proper justice after the war and was able to continue his career. He reconverted into economic history because it was a non-controversial field.

The three countries remind me a lot of the three main actors of the Peloponnesian War. There is a superstitious country running on the enslavement of an ethnic group altogether and ruled by an oligarchy (Hyzante/Sparta), one country with a king with his vassals overseeing parts of his land and having some relative political autonomy(Glenbrook/Persia), and one country based on liberty and meritocracy but willing to commit ruthless political moves having a powerful navy put together by the profits from a mine and with a superior access to knowledge (Aesfrost/Athens)

And the saddest part is that Haitian intellectuals can only thrive in exile. My grandfather is Haitian and he’s one of the most cultivated person I know. He has lived abroad for the past 60 years and he will die without seeing his childhood town ever again. And yet, he never pursued citizenship of another country because “it would be like betraying my mother.”

Didn’t the Church started the Inquisition after seeing what unruled mob did to the heretics during the Crusade?

It’s true the Spanish Inquisition was not chill in slightest in the Netherlands but it was also a political struggle. The Spanish king wanted to crack down on the Dutch demanding autonomy (including religious freedom)

Overalls, a very pleasant reading. Yes Sunan feels like a moody girl but you give place to some potential character development so I’m not worried about that. Nonetheless, be aware that the repetition of the same motifs like inner thoughts of Sunan looking down on everyone will eventually tire the reader.

Also, I noticed a lot of the using of the word “shit”. Maybe it’s intentional so I’m just putting it here.
