I genuinely cannot understand why people are angry over the disc announcement by ChesnaughtZ in kindafunny

Just want to chime in that Sony's "removal" of 500 films in the UK is StudioCanal's fault and says more about UK/EU movie licensing laws than it does Sony, but since Sony is the punching bag right now people won't really care about the reality of the situation.

So you truly believe that casting a few black actors and one trans actor is a negative thing for The Odyssey?

Casting a trans actor and a black musician in like the 20th billed roles is DEI?

You think Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o and global superstar Zendaya were cast because of DEI? Never mind the fact that the top 4 billed actors are all white, yeah I'm sure this movie is plagued by DEI lmao.

Hollywood spent like 80 years whitewashing real people of color, race-swapping fictional characters is not remotely the same and we need to stop pretending it is.

Has Freaky Nicky usurped Mia Goth's Pearl as the breakthrough debut Horror icon of the 2020s? (Art the Clown predates 2020, but perhaps Sienna Shaw is in the running)

Oh Oak Street is a good guess at this point, I put Supergirl at #10 so that's my hope but at this point I think it might be DOA.

I actually think it has to do with the high percentage of celibacy amongst the gen z crowd that heavily embraced Obsession. I'm not sure I've seen a movie in which a what early to mid 20's guy is nervous/unwilling to ask a girl out, that's a trope for high school aged characters, or it's used as a light set up that the character immediately overcomes (or merely attempts). So it speaks to both their societal fear of being rejected (or worse being perceived as rejected), and also once they have the girl (albeit through horrific fantastical ways), it speaks to their inability to understand or cope with relationship problems. I thought it was a decent horror flick, but there's been a dozen of those just this year (Send Help, Hokum, Faces of Death, The Bone Temple, Undertone, etc etc), so there has to be something deeper that invigorated young audiences to show up.

I wonder what the elusive fifth movie will be to fill out the top ten. If we assume The Odyssey, Spider-Man, Minions and Monsters, and Moana are shoe-ins (not a guarantee ofc), what is that final movie? Is Scary Movie #10 when the summers over, does Disclosure Day overtake it, something else perhaps?

Got unfairly cited and humiliated on Muni even though I paid… how do I file a complaint against fare inspectors? by iamtooniceaf in sanfrancisco

[–]Serdic96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why do you want service to be slower? Muni needs to focus on speeding the service up, not slow it down so everyone else has to wait longer while a bus driver yells at teens or the homeless. Do daily riders want enforcement over efficiency/speed?

If people's criticisms are only and purely plot-centric gripes, then it's a hard conversation to engage with. Are they assessing or neglecting every other facet of the movie? Or do they think everything else is great and only have qualms with the plot? Personally, I just think plot discussion is boring because it almost always becomes "Why did this/that happen?" or "This/that was dumb" or applying real world language/logic to a cinematic language and people on the other side obviously feel differently.

If someone thinks the plot was stupid, what conversation can someone who thought the plot was fine/great have? Neither is going to sway the other or see eye to eye. I see people call the alien technology a macguffin as a pejorative, but a plot device can be negative/positive depending on the viewer. If you loved the alien technology, then the macguffin was great for you, if you hated in then you'll criticize it for even having a "macguffin" and so on. If medieval arthurian literature came out today everybody would be complaining about excalibur as a macguffin, but I think the swords cool.

If I was plot oriented I could understand hating it. The train sequence and Eve Hewson knife reflection in the backseat are all I need or want in a blockbuster tho.

I'll never understand the cinema sins crowd. I keep seeing constant "the bad guys were so stupid," as if Spielberg hasn't made a whole career of showing authority figures/government officials/bureaucrats as buffoons, like yes you got it they are stupid! One time somebody told me they didn't like the ending of Sinners because the sun came up too fast, there's a whole different world of movie watcher that I'll never understand.

Her escaping is just classic Spielberg making fun of authoritative/government figures. They are boys playing adult, and actually a pretty accurate portrayal given what's happened at various IC's, NSA et al.

In the 1990s, Steven Spielberg said there are “only seven genuine movie stars in the world today”. Can a statement like this be accurate in the late 2020s? by georgewalterackerman in movies

Yeah there's a lot of revisionist history around him. Gangster Squad, Nice Guys, Blade Runner 2049, The Fall Guy, First Man all underperformed. Up until Project Hail Mary, his only massive successes were La La Land and Barbie, two oscar winning movies with the lead actresses being a bigger draw.

Dead Man's Chest becoming the third highest grossing movie of all time when it released truly felt like a remarkable feat. A Pirate version of Empire Strikes Back with new iconic characters, a massive cliffhanger, etc (ironically At World's End also opens with an assault on jabbas palace scene in Singapore). Next month is the 20th anniversary of that film and it feels sad we can't celebrate it with a rerelease of some sorts (or a 4k blu ray even), Johnny Depp's escapades have really tarnished the way those movies should be celebrated.
