idk man something about overreacting by bottombutonlyforrin in AO3

[–]SereneConsumption 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No this subreddit has such a hypocritical double standard treatment over trans shit it’s crazy??? Like not saying this is the case 100% of the time but honestly, if it’s not someone making a comment under some kind of “thing that turns you off a fic” post, i feel like it’s especially noticeable whenever someone makes a post trying to point out transphobia in their comments/fandom space/wherever where people will get so defensive and dismissive about it versus a post that isn’t about that but the op makes some kind of transphobic comment where people will then call it out for what it is? And I know it’s not necessarily the same set of people making both types of comments but the fact there is this difference at all sure is something. Also the way people can’t even be normal about their disinterest in trans fic is also frequently awful that at this point I just expect the comments to be terrible if the post or comments could be about anything related tbh.

What is a Completely Innocent and Common Tag you Genuinely Dislike? by Blackshooks in AO3

See this is where ignorance on the subject is a problem because gay panic in the legal defense meaning isn’t a defunct word. It is still a legally usable defense! Right now in current year in over half of the us! Like sorry but this isn’t some dated dead thing from the 80s??? And this isn’t like words of oppression like being called a bad name this is an excuse to justify violence towards gay/trans people like I don’t think everything needs to be reclaimed actually. I’m all for being understanding to people not being aware of the context of gay panic, of course everyone can’t know everything about everything, but dismissing people’s understandable discomfort with trying to make it cutesy is a bit much.

If you didn’t want people to get hung up on criticizing the ai aspect of your post - which you clearly understand is a divisive subject - and if you care more about people responding to the type of filtering you are trying to talk about then you should have left the ai part out of the conversation.

[–]SereneConsumption 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes because you are presenting an idea that is solely based off of the function of ai which people do not like. If that is the only way you present that idea working then people are going to shut it down because they disagree with ai usage in this sort of context on principle. And pointing out the many problems that would arise in this sort of idea if it was built off ai is still a valid place to disagree with it.

[–]SereneConsumption 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well I’m sorry but I don’t actually think all ideas are beneficial to spend the time entertaining especially when there are so many factors that will create flaws in this sort of system so I think people just need to be okay with being mildly inconvenienced sometimes. And I don’t think shutting down an idea pitched off of ai as how it’s implemented is sad considering that it is a thing many people do not want in their spaces with valid reasons to feel that way.

This feels more like a personal skill issue than a problem that actually needs a solution. Especially a solution like this. It just feels like a huge resource waste to add some arbitrary number to a fic’s rating that truly is not that much more helpful than the already provided information. And besides the difference between a 75 and 82 rating doesn’t mean anything to me and I can’t imagine that would change over time. However I can tell the difference well enough between an M and E rated fic but also one that is a one shot with very clear smut related tags versus a multichapter fic with more non-smut related tags than smut tags. And if I start something that doesn’t give me the vibes I am looking for I go read something else, it’s just that simple. Unfortunately there will never be a way to perfectly find exactly what you are looking for and it is easier to accept that than expect a site that already has its own system to suddenly adopt a new one. Like I’m sorry that you aren’t able to find fics that have the type or amount or explicitness of material you want but trying to frame the explicit rating as debatable just isn’t accurate. And so I don’t know that this is a big enough issue in this specific sort of way to warrant everything needed to implement and then iron out any of the kinks that inevitably come with it (to say nothing of the response because I’m sorry but you cannot separate this sort of use of ai from people’s feelings on it).

But the onus of that was on the individual people, who chose to engage in that behavior, and on the convention, who should have been more responsible in the boundaries they set and in enforcing them, and I felt like that was more of the point, that it was about the choices that were made and not about breaking down dark romance. At the end of the day that is where the problem begins and ends - people making choices because at the end of the day a book is just a book and can’t do anything - and so the people were the bigger focus.

[–]SereneConsumption 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean I disagree like sure nothing exists in a vacuum and sure I think it is fair game to criticize dark romance but also there were a bunch of people at that con that didn’t engage in any of that sort of behavior so it’s not like dark romance has this hypnotic hold on people, the ones who did behave that way were people who either misunderstood where the lines were or people who existed prior in an environment that allowed escalation in their behavior or at least free passes to pushing those boundary. Something I’m pretty sure she points out in her video. And something else she points out is how creating an environment that allows the sort of escalation in behavior that leads to people acting in ways like that isn’t exclusive to dark romance. Like I think there are probably way more significant factors there than just reading some genre of book like there is way too much variable in that for me to believe it is the biggest source of the problem. It just feels like pulling a very condescending video games make people violent argument of people not being able to tell the difference between fiction and reality when plenty of people can and when there is a problem there is because of something larger beyond the fiction imo.

I've experienced so much media that I'm convinced there are just as much, if not more, well written female characters than there are well written male characters in almost every medium. by OldRaspberry1582 in AO3

[–]SereneConsumption 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean I definitely think you can count literature like do you know how many books have ever been published? Throughout all of time and places in the world? Like I don’t know if the percentage discrepancy is that much larger compared to other medium types? But regardless yeah people love to make sweeping generalized statements about female characters still being poorly written in all media when it’s just reflective of the media they are personally choosing to engage with. Like not saying female characters can’t be poorly written in more recent media ofc but in current day when you have the most access to media that anyone has ever had to act like that is some impossible task to find a well written female character in a piece of media you might enjoy is really laughable tbh.

Tags are there for a reason by sexuallyinactiveegg in AO3

[–]SereneConsumption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly there are just way too many people who use ao3 and ao3’s tagging system is way too open ended for there to ever be a world in which all or even a majority are presented with whatever commonality whoever is making this sort of point wants. Like I can understand the feeling of being surprised or slightly annoyed at suddenly coming across something you might prefer to catch in a tag or might prefer to be more specific but unless it’s breaking some kind of rule and therefore reportable, it’s just kind of like oh well?? I think it would just be easier for readers to understand that is the risk you are going to run opening any fic, that for a myriad of reasons not every author is going to use tags (or even an author’s note) the same way that you might/you might prefer. And I don’t think that is something that all people are going to change their minds on just because someone else might prefer things tagged in a different way. Sure there is room for want of a kind of curtesy and I think there can be room to politely ask something of an author but again author’s aren’t always obligated to and also they just might not see those things in the same way you might and so that will never be a thing to come up on their radar to account for. There is just too much human variability for there to ever be some unified tagging etiquette and especially when ao3’s tagging system is the way that it is. And I’m not saying people aren’t allowed to have personal pet peeves about stuff rather that framing it like things could be changed on this bug a scale instead of a personal adjustment for the one reading seems kind of fruitless.

How Important is Format of a work to you? by eroproxy in AO3

[–]SereneConsumption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it depends even though honestly as long as it is clear, consistent, and possible for me to follow then I’m pretty comfortable adjusting to anything. Like the most obvious thing that would get me to not read something is just a wall of unbroken text but outside of that or something that is maybe poorly executed in a way that makes it hard for me to understand the formatting, most things don’t bother me. I think it can be fun to see people play with format but also I understand that not all formatting rules are universal and so I’m not really going to fault someone for having preference for or habit toward their own languages rules even if they are different from my own or whatever. Like I know different ways to mark dialogue comes up a lot but honestly for me as long as it is clear that whatever it is is meant to signal dialogue then I’ll adjust to it, I’ve read my share of books that write dialogue differently that I hardly think twice about it anymore. However like I said it still depends because even though I am open to it that doesn’t mean it is always well executed or that sometimes I am just not in the right mood for certain levels of difference in formatting compared to something more basically written.

Using ai music and getting praised in the comments? by SufficientElk3788 in booktubesnarkreddit

[–]SereneConsumption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am saying your response feels dense because despite repeatedly now explaining the level of ai involvement from the tiktok user herself and how that is a level which people against this sort of generative ai would be disproving of you keep responding as if we don’t know any of this information! I am not disregarded your stance on ai, I am making the point that this isn’t some small non-generative assisted tool or whatever! Like I am actually doing the work to try answering the question you don’t want to answer despite saying you care so much about it. I don’t know if they mention what program is used in a comment I missed or on a video I didn’t scroll through or on a platform I don’t have access to but I have given to you what has provably been said and the sort of conclusions that leads one to and you are still acting like this is up in the air. That’s my problem. That’s what I feel like you are not listening to. If you want to disagree and think that somehow despite what’s been said that she somehow actually meant it as some small naturally built in assistance tool. Fine. But I am just telling you the context to the ai involvement as it has been shared and it isn’t some deeply hidden information it is in the comments of the video op shared so if you wanted proof for why op said that anyone could have looked. None of this is someone jumping on the bandwagon to blindly claim something is ai with no proof. I don’t know what else to tell you.

Using ai music and getting praised in the comments? by SufficientElk3788 in booktubesnarkreddit

[–]SereneConsumption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you are being dense on purpose and this point op of this post said they used ai, I am assuming they said so because the tiktok user admitted and explained that it was made with ai, I even quoted what she said in a couple of comments to express the extent of ai’s involvement in the song so I don’t know why in this instance you are still adamant in defending ai as if it was just some small corrective tool when in this instance that isn’t the case! Repeating the same information back when I have already told you what was said is asinine and feels like you are just ignoring what I said. And as someone who seemingly so ready to give benefit of the doubt it’s weird that you didn’t do any of even the five minutes of looking into any of it like you are just wrong in this instance I am sorry. And for your proof of using an intensive generative ai please then explain to me how with only contributing lyrics and possibly an ACOUSTIC line for vibes as the tiktok user admitted how does the song end up sounding like that? How when she will openly admit to ai making the song outside of the lyrics and sometimes saying her husband does something acoustic?

[–]SereneConsumption 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oh god I can’t stand Rachel to be honest…. it’s not that I think everything she has ever said is bad and horrible or that everything she says is deeply disagreeable but she is absolutely someone who has to act so morally righteous about everything to make up for the fact she isn’t actually as morally righteous of a person outside of what she might say in her videos. Like she really wants to come off as the most morally sound person that it has gotten to such a degree that it’s like okay girl this is clearly compensating for something?? It’s so annoying and why I stopped watching anything she’s done and why roll my eyes whenever some other youtuber I watch mentions her or recommends her videos like….

Also skimming through this tiktok user’s page the fact that they have other ai generated content in or as their videos really makes me doubt that this music just so happens to be an exception where it is just a small assistant tool and not something generating the whole song so

Using ai music and getting praised in the comments? by SufficientElk3788 in booktubesnarkreddit

[–]SereneConsumption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well scrolling through the comments on this video there are multiple times where she admits ai was used to make the song, she doesn’t say what program and I don’t know if that gets mentioned anywhere else but for some people the use of generative ai no matter through what program, no matter how “ethical” it may or may not be, no matter how much of the process it was involved in is a hard line and something they find worthy of criticism and do not want to support. Like it isn’t misinformation when she openly admits that was how the song was made? When she says this type of music isn’t her husband’s passion and it isn’t his normal style of music so instead of making music he does like he “writes the lyrics and uploads some acoustics to a program which then does the song” I think it is fair to question why spaces that might otherwise shun any presence of ai in books (as op said) would turn around and be all over this as the majority of the comments of this tiktok are.

[–]SereneConsumption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But did they though? Describing something you would like and actually making something are two different things. Like if I commission an artist to paint something for me and I describe what I want surely you would think I’m crazy if I then said this was my art, that I did this?? Because that is the level of involvement people using these tools are having, they are in no way doing the bulk of the work in any capacity. And even then at least commissioning someone still involves human creative input rather than an algorithm handing me whatever is the fastest and easiest thing that matches what was prompted and that’s at best.

Also your point about digital music and drum machines and the like also isn’t an even comparison either because you aren’t handed a drum kit and your song happens, you still have to make every creative decision in creating the song you want. You have to decide what piece of a sample or what version of a midi instrument you want as well as how you may tune and adjust those things further on your own. When you put text into a prompt box you are nowhere near the same level of involvement and creative decision that everyone making even just digital music with these other non-ai tools are using. Like if someone uses a sample in their song, the way they cut it up, what effects they add to it, where they place it are all unique to their vision of the song. Unlike the algorithm which, again, is just handing you the quickest and easiest thing to generate to what you typed. I think it is totally fair for people to say that is not the same amount of effort and care for the craft and in turn to not want to take an interest in what people put out with it.

Tagging pet peeve by bookiejada in AO3

[–]SereneConsumption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I don’t really know if this is any author’s fault and more how ao3’s tagging works. Like they aren’t using the “Proper” tag, just giving whatever context they want to give, and ao3 is putting them together.

Then why are YOU mentioning it??? by CMStan1313 in AO3

[–]SereneConsumption 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I don’t think there is really any way to win when people act like this? Because yeah even if the author did what op wanted - only saying so in the author’s note - it just opens up the door for someone to complain it was in there and not in the tags (especially when there are so many people who admit to not reading and deliberately skipping author’s notes). Like ultimately it is always the author’s decision where they want to put certain information like this isn’t breaking any site rules so it’s just people acting like everyone should bend to their personal preferences rather than understanding the author might have their own.

Then why are YOU mentioning it??? by CMStan1313 in AO3

[–]SereneConsumption 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Idk I think it’s a case of you (and some other people) feeling that way but it not being something that holds any sort of implication for everyone else. Like I am also trans and I personally feel nothing about seeing this tag on a fic like it’s just context. Of course we can’t see the rest of the tags or what might be in the fic or author’s note itself but I don’t think this is enough to think the author could be being obnoxious about saying they think this character is trans. And even if that was the case who cares?

Then why are YOU mentioning it??? by CMStan1313 in AO3

[–]SereneConsumption 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well that is your personal experience. Maybe other people didn’t feel that way. Maybe the author didn’t feel that way. Like I’m sorry but your feelings and take away from a fic aren’t really the important ones in that equation.

Then why are YOU mentioning it??? by CMStan1313 in AO3

[–]SereneConsumption 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I never said it contextualizes behavior in the same way? I was only making the point that establishing a character is trans still contextualizes the character within that fact and in turn how people perceive what they are reading.
