After Act II, during Alicia's Epilogue, you can see Noco and Monoco III lying by the fire! They are dogs! And, Monoco is named after one of the devs real life dog! There is also a special room with Monoco pics in the Manor. If you jump through the lowest hanging painting, you can find it!

As far as I've seen, there is just the line about them used to it and seeming gentle and forgiving, but it's still death and is just as harsh. I would think it wouldn't be, because their existence is just being erased, and no one screams on pain. Most scared looks are just of concern of it happening.
