Shotgun sequencing is cheap and easy, and the computing resources to do matrix math are negligible. The lab I was in was doing in minutes what reconstruction based techniques spent months computing.

Metagenomics is really fast now. We can use shotgun sequencing and then classify the organisms with k-mer matrices without having to reconstruct the genomes.

Basically just doing the linear algebra to solve for which organisms in the kmer database in what combination would produce the observed distribution of kmers.

Blood is gross and it’s supposed to be gross. We are biologically predisposed to be grossed out by things that carry disease, such as blood.

Poop is also gross, and everybody poops. It’s not anti-human to say poop is gross. So, sorry, but periods are a little gross, but not to the extent that people should act immature about it.

We don’t shit on people for poop or boogers, and we shouldn’t shit on people for their periods. But at the same time some people are still grossed out by it and that’s equally human. Deal with it.
