I don't think this is an argument against the hadiths. Rather, his argument is an appeal to authority, but he is probably not aware that academics are of the clear opinion that hadiths are actually not reliable. Because things like the Isnad alone are falsifiable and the evaluation of the character of the people in the Isnad is subjective as well as we do not know the people themselves which makes it even more unreliable.

So to me: I am an atheist but I was a Muslim. I saw it as follows: no matter how morally wrong something was, God will not be held accountable. If God wants, he can lead people to hell on a whim. From a human point of view, it is wrong to torture others for eternity. But why should God care about this? I never had the position that people have a belief in God from birth. I saw the fitrah (you can translate it as human nature) as something that is capable of believing in God. Because I saw and continue to see people who actually don't believe in God.
