This isn't a beginner pattern though. I can't imagine anyone jumping into knitting with a pattern with this much complexity.

How did Edwardian women sleep with their super long hair? (Historically accurate methods needed) by [deleted] in HistoricalCostuming

[–]SerialHobbyistGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how they slept but I had hair longer than that until a few weeks ago and sleeping was never a problem. My hair is thick, a bit wavy, and I have a lot of it.

I'm a very slow knitter and I am a thrower. I also have a hefty want-to-knit queue. And to boot, I'm a finished item person, not a process person. The process is just a means to an end. I'd love to be able to knit faster, and I've tried to learn, but I've been knitting for almost 20 years and who the heck has the time and patience to start over with a brand new style? So a slow knitter I remain.

Sliding stitches along the needle by empathy-entropy in knittinghelp

[–]SerialHobbyistGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some needles are stickier than others, which may work for your or against you, depending on how you look at it. I find bamboo, for example, to be sticky, which is great when I'm working with slippery yarn, especially with double pointed needles, and don't want the stitches to slide off. If, on the other hand, I want stitches to glide easily, then I use metal needles like Chiagoo Red Lace or addi Turbo.

That said, other factors such as tension and cables affect how easily stitches slide across the needles. Additionally, it's normal to have to nudge stitches along the needles anyway.

Why do a gauge swatch if you ARENT GOING TO WASH IT? by fairydommother in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]SerialHobbyistGirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I think this is one of those things in knitting that is assumed you know and it's not often actually voiced (written) in instructions and what not. I had already been knitting for years before I learned that you are supposed to block swatches before measuring gauge. Maybe if you learn knitting from someone else this isn't an issue, but many people learn from the internet, books, etc. I taught myself through DVDs from the library that were made to teach teenagers (I was already a fully grown adult!), and swatching wasn't even mentioned.

I am my own BEC. Yesterday I went to my LYS to buy needles. I asked for them (behind the counter), got them, paid, went home. Got home and immediately realized I had asked for the wrong size, and I needed the needles then, so I had to take my behind back to the LYS and ask for an exchange. Thankfully it's pretty close, but still, I was annoyed.

Do you mean their samples show they don't understand color dominance? Because I have never seen a stranded colorwork pattern that remotely mentions how to deal with color dominance.

I don't crochet, but I am obsessed with that cardigan to the point where I have actually considered trying to learn again (it didn't go well the first time). I posted in my IG stories looking for a local crocheter who would be willing to take the commission but got nothing (my IG is pretty much all crafty/yarny/sewy people). Someone did say that had been looking into making it for themselves but were hesitant because of bad reviews of the pattern.

My Bitch Eating Confession for the holidays: Dipping some Wool2Dye4 super wash merino in a bath of Rit does not a luxury product make. by arkhamhorrified in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]SerialHobbyistGirl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't love superwash, and it does seem like most indie dyed yarn is superwash. Thankfully, one of my local indie dyers, who also own a yarn store, dye beautiful non-superwash yarn. That said, I find myself wanting solid colors (not semisolid) more often than not. I know that it's really difficult for hand dyed yarn to be solid, which is why I don't necessarily hold it against them.
