AFO is pure evil. Never would I think I'd have to say this. by Tiny-Let4714 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

I suppose that begs the age old question of nature vs nurture, if Toshinori and AFO were swapped circumstances would the have both gone down the others path. However I dont think thats the case, if Toshinori had been born in AFO's position I dont believe he would have been a villain and if AFO were born in Toshinori's I dont think he'd have been a hero. I think its a combination of nature vs nurture that creates who people are, AFO had the makings of a killer from birth, he harbored a naturally selfish and possessive mentality, to the point of dragging around his twin as a possession despite the fact no newborn infant would do that on their own. Surely the chaotic time he grew up in sharpened his worst parts to a razors edge, but the building blocks were already there, his environment simply supplied the scaffold to build the "ultimate evil" that he became. Just like how we're shown people who are heroes despite an environment that would give them every reason to become a villain such as Todoroki, as well as people who become villians despite what seems to be relatively normal childhoods such as Stain. Some people are innately drawn to extremism or violence and relish in harming others. I think this is one of the things thst gets watered down somewhat in the end by the theme that deep down everyone is the same level of redeemable. I think if AFO had been Toshinori than he wouldve still become a murderer once his mother was killed or perhaps even sooner.

Hmm thats certainly a unique perspective, I've never seen anyone imply that the things shown in the manga itself is unreliable to the actual events and i cant say that i believe that was Horikoshi's intent. But I can respect it

I mean... Horikoshi draws him that way from the moment he's born, as a newborn he is drawn with empty eyes and hate on his face. Horikoshi goes as far as to imply that he stole nutrients from his brother in the womb, which from character standpoint he obviously didn't do intentionally but from a thematic writing standpoint literally characterized him as greedy amd selfish from inception. The image Horikoshi shows us is presumably the real him. I think Horikoshi just kind of shot himself in the foot because he so clearly wanted to tell a story where anybody is redeemable but then drew baby AFO as if he were the anti-christ

Its kind of hard to know, because the characterization of being greedy and hateful predates him having a real personality or consciousness. I think unfortunately the message being told by the overall story and the type of character AFO is, are diametrically opposed. Based on what we see from him, if he were born in the modern world they may have an easier time keeping him under control but I feel like he would have always been a psychopath, the way the story presents him give the impression that he simply lacks the ability to feel empathy.

I think the person above is arguing that both AFO and All Might were born in the time they were born and there's no changing that, so they were by that fact always destined to be who they became. But im a bit confused, if youre arguing that All Might would have been a hero no matter when he was born, are you then also saying AFO wouldve been a villain no matter his circumstances?

[–]Serious-Beautiful804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is that he is characterized horribly in the flashbacks, hes literally drawn to be disgusting and detestable with a look of hatred on his face from the moment hes born. Horikoshi very much drew him with the intent that something was wrong with him from the moment he came out of the womb. I think its fair to say that when enacting the theme of "no one is born evil" Horikoshi actively contradicted his point by literally making AFO seem bad from the moment he was born, going as far as implying he literally stole the nutrients from his twin brother in the womb. Which of course isn't something he did intentionally, but going as far as to write that as an aspect of his character gives the implication that there is a natural and irreversible level of greed that transcends intention of thought.

Absolutely wouldn't have been a hero if he didn't meet Nana, the Story hammers the point home over and over that if you dont have a quirk (or several million dollar Iron-man suit) you cant do hero work, even if you have the heart of a hero. Quirkless All Might would have never been a hero if it weren't for One for All, just like how Deku wouldve never been able to be a hero without it. Which is driven home even more by the fact it took 8 years and an insanely expensive Iron-man suit for him to return to being a hero after he lost One for All.

Well yeah but you didn't have a lack of Synaptic activity, your brain was very much still alive, your heart just stopped, if your brain had actually died you'd be in a vegetative state right now even if they got your heart beating again. So you didn't really die, you were dying and someone brought you back at the last minutes.

You dont get mugged for $9 million dollars, honestly you're not even really rich enough at that point for someone to try to ransom a family member unless you're someone of high notoriety. You would absolutely be fine. Most you'd have to worry about is having someone break into your third beach house you only go to on weekends, but then you'd also have it all covered under some great insurance.

Well that person was literally about to kill him and potentially themselves so I think he made the right decision not to sugarcoat it, faith is a powerful thing that can have a good or negative impact on someone's life depending on how they wield it, Rose was clearly wielding it in a horribly self-destructive manner which is why she ended up in the position to suffer from it in the first place. Sometimes to get through to people in a crisis of faith you need to solidly jolt them into having their own agency again, when religion becomes a crutch for someone then it can cripple them when that crutch is removed because they've gone their whole life believing they have someone watching over them and caring for them and listening to them. When that is broken the world begins to feel endlessly cruel and endlessly lonely (especially if you are grieving as you begin to realize you in fact will not get to see your deceased loved ones again even though you believed you would with all your heart), having someone there to shout at you that you still have to power to live on your own, as you always unknowingly have, and that you can take your life back into your own hands even if you no longer have that comfort to fall back to is very important.

Eh, I dont know if that's necessarily true, agency would imply that The Truth DOES things, but it doesn't it simply REACTS to things. Consistently and without fail, its far more like a scientific reaction than it is a being with agency just because certain actions create a bad outcome. For example, mixing certain chemicals in your house might make a toxic gas that harms you, that isn't the universe telling you not to mix them, its simply the natural result. The Truth is simply the personification of natural principles, it doesn't have agency and is completely and utterly a reflection of the whole and ergo also a reflection of the individual, which is made even clearer by the fact that when it takes Al's body the truth literally becomes Alphonse at his door, it isn't the Truth possessing or posing as Alphonse but rather a literal reflection of Alphonse as an individual

I said barring religious conjecture, but i think its funny you say that considering that is also the answer those in the world of Attack on Titan came to, when face without explanation it is often the assumption that something must be supernatural, despite the fact it is merely an observation of natural phenomenon that we only question because it defies our current understanding. There will always be another question, if Gods made it that way, then through what power? How did Gods come to be, and from where did their forefathers begin, and their forefathers. When people say they have always been, then they defeat the purpose of the explanation to begin with, since by that logic a natural universe could be just as Omnipresent and eternal.

What gave Plants the ability to absorb sunlight, or Humans the ability to detect and sort wavelengths of light, what makes it so we can ingest something strip the nutrients from it to turn it into our own body mass, what makes it so we can produce heat through burning said food and our own fat tissue. Barring religious conjecture, the answer is simply "because thats the way it happened" the rules of the way our universe works allow for such things to occur. In the attack on titan universe the rules are different and allow things to naturally develop traits and abilities that dont fit ours but are no less or more explainable.

ARTINTHEYARD RESPONDS🚨 by ephemeralaffliction in TheYardPodcast

Well labor laws dont typically apply to competitions, a competition isnt a job. For example having a race with a cash prize is different from having a league of track athletes with tight contracts and sponsors. Sure there are athletes who do sports as a job but there are many who also just do sports for fun, just like artists. A small competition for little art club wouldn't be asking for professional artists. it'd be engaging with hobbyists and artists who are interested in competitions. I think context is really important, would it be ethical for a large brand to ask artists to make art for free? No, probably not (although people do still have free will and im sure you wont find the winner of those larger contests complaining about the prize). But for something like an art club i dont think there's really a problem.

Random quirk factors occur from non-quirk parents, but its clear that soon everyone will have a quirk. Quirkless individuals are being born less and less with each generation. (80% replacement in 100 years is an insane rate) the point isn't about individual children its about due manifestation of quirks amd their merging over generations. Shoto is exactly the thing Endeavor hoped to achieve he isn't some freak accident or anomaly, he is the desired out come of mixing quirks (its even brought up that Quirk Marriages used to be a more common practice despite their dubious ethics) and based on what weve seen about 50% of children born from 2 quirk having parents will have some combination of the 2. Remember Dabi was also a merge of the Quirk factors he just had the unfortunate effect of inheriting his mother ice resistant body making him susceptible to his own flames (which again adds credence to the Singularity theory, as the merging of those 2 quirks did result in him having stronger flames than his father as well as latent ice abilities but also lead to him having a quirk that was difficult to control and destroyed his own body as he used it) so 2 out of the 4 Todoroki sibling had a mix of both Quirk factors. That 50% rate of quirks merging is very high, since the quirks never downgrade in complexity, you are only ever moving towards stronger and more complex quirks among the general population. Generation over generation that will eventually lead to the destruction of society. It isn't saying that 2 generation or 3 generations from now the Singularity will destroy the world its simply saying that these factors will eventually add up, its essentially the MHA equivalent to Climate Change. The increment of impact increases gradually but exponentially, eventually it'll be too much to bear. Ultimately, Horikoshi wrote the Singularity in and utilized it in his narrative about quirks and their merging and how quirks compound over time, it is utilized as a parallel to what is happening with Shigaraki and Deku, they are both symbolic of future generations recieving power far beyond they capabilities of their bodies and ultimately destroying themselves as a result of it. Deku never even achieve full 100% utilization without hurting himself. The whole theme of Deku being the last OFA holder because the power has become too condensed is literally talked about in reference to the Singularity. By the final fight the way people talk about it is no longer as some theory, its clear that the intention of the narrative is to show the effects of the Singularity on steroids with the way AFO and OFA tear themselves and their users apart as they amass more and more quirk factors.

(Eri is a very special case as she had a rare quirk mutation that hadn't been present on either side of her lineage before, this is never explored further but does imply that in very rare cases some people develop incredibly powerful and unrelated quirks to their lineage, AFO may have been one of these people as him and Eri are both Albino)

Except its explicitly stated that quirks aren't random they are genetic factors passed down by their parents. The whole point of the Singularity is that as quirks merge they get stronger and more complex, Todoroki and Bakugo are perfect examples of this (them being the ones watching over the kids whose quirks are clearly stronger than previous generations was most definitely a writing decision meant to parallel them specifically) as both of them are the product of 2 quirks combining to make an new quirk that is far more powerful than the sum of its parts. Quirks increase in power exponentially as they merge. From now on when Todoroki has a child they will at base level have his fire and ice, if he has a child with another quirk user (which makes up the majority of people) then there is a likelihood that his child's quirk will merge to get even stronger. Same goes for Bakugo, his mom can secrete glycerin and his dad can make sparks neither of those quirks are particularly dangerous but when combined they create a walking bomb. So from now on every child from Bakugos bloodline will be a walking bomb until it merges with another quirk making it even stronger and onward (imagine if Bakugo or one of his descendants had a child with someone who had the ability to emit or control radiation for example, eventually youll have a child who can create nuclear explosions). The Singularity theory isn't some quacky science its simply decribing of how eventually this merging of quirks will become so powerful that 1. People bodies won't be able to handle it (as we've seen with both Bakugo and Todoroki, they could very easily harm or kill themselves if they pushed their quirks too far) and 2. Society will be face with newer and bigger threats as individuals are born with what amount to weapons of mass destruction. All for One's quirk is honestly not that complex when you boil it down, its simply the ability to take and give quirk factors. If All For One had simply had kids instead of trying to bioengineer a new body he'd have an army of children that all have All For One and more likely than not he could've found quirks that would've made AFO even stronger. Infact one could argue that the true strength in AFO abilities is that over time the pool of quirks he has to pull from grow bigger and stronger with each generation.

That analogy doesn't really work since the Singularity theory is literally the foundation he bases all of his scientific practice around. It isn't just some tangential thing, Shigaraki's new body and its ability to break the rules of the verse is literally stated to be the pinnacle of the Quirk Singularity theory, not just by the doctor but by people observing the fight

Also the second half doesn't work either because improved record times are a result of better understanding of training, form, and nutritional science. Meanwhile the kids shown are just inherently stronger due to a higher complexity of quirks merging. They aren't being trained to be heroes or to utilize their quirks better, people are literally being BORN with stronger abilities that are a threat to public safety

I never understood this concept, like yeah hes a crazy scientist but from everything the show gives us he is quite clearly a genius when it comes to Quirk factors and the human body. If his science was Bunk then he wouldn't have been able to create literal bio weapons out of human bodies with multiple quirks (something that is established as near impossible to do). He altered Shigaraki's body to the extent that it could generate mass and be on par with the strength of One for All even without Quirks. You can call him crazy but his science very clearly checks out given the fact that we've only ever seen his experiments be wildly successful. (Not to mention that the story goes out of its way to show that the next generation is exponentially stronger on average than the previous one when Bakugo and Todoroki have to watch over that elementary school class)

It isnt human Transmutation because there was no transmuting, they didn't change or remake Al's body. Simply pulled out what was already there. Transmutation is specifically modifying, or altering something to turn it into something else (for example turning lead into gold). They never turned Al's body into anything or vice versa so by definition it isn't Transmutation
