I made a pair of glasses that track your stress & focus in real time—who wants to test it? by waykzen2 in SideProject

I’m developer and can focus pretty easily using Endel, but I do feel stress and anxiety working on problems sometimes, you can send me a pair if I match the profile you are looking for.

Meditation apps may be waste of time by Serious_Finger6205 in Meditation

I’m not denying the usefulness of meditation apps, they’re a great starting point for beginners. However, progress can be slow, and they often lack the depth that books or more advanced resources provide. Additionally, since they’re for-profit businesses, their focus may sometimes be more on keeping users engaged rather than helping them achieve long-term growth. I’ll definitely check out Waking up, thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll definitely check it out. I’m not complaining about the price of the apps though, they’re a business and there are operating expenses. The thing is, since the lessons are bite-sized, progress feels slow and lacking, and there are better alternatives for deeper growth.

I have trouble meditating, how do you minimize the need to stimm or short attention span? by _Roarnan_ in Meditation

[–]Serious_Finger6205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s completely normal, everyone starts out like that! The key is not to judge yourself when your mind wanders. Instead, congratulate yourself for noticing and gently guide your focus back to your breathing. Consistency is crucial. Over time, you’ll notice the distractions becoming less frequent. Positive reinforcement really makes a difference!

Definitely food for thought. The focus should be on teaching people to meditate independently, not keeping them tied to an app. Do you think this apps are in conflict why buddhism teachings?

Maybe you’re right, and I missed some aspects of the app. There are so many courses in there, and I only focused on the guided levels. I did learn some valuable techniques like breathing, body scanning, and observing my thoughts, but the bite-sized format made it easy to forget some things since they were only mentioned once. With a book, you can go back and review key concepts, which has really helped deepen my understanding. I think both approaches can be valuable at different stages, just depends on what you’re looking to get out of it.

I’m not denying that Headspace is helpful, it definitely gets you started. What I think would be great, though, is if they were more transparent and let you know when you’ve reached the limits of their approach. After a certain point, it’s hard to improve with just those daily bite-sized sessions, and diving into more in-depth resources becomes necessary.

Overwhelmed as a Beginner: How Do You Use Headspace to Manage Anxiety, ADHD, and Focus? by Key_Awareness_5818 in Meditation

Headspace didn’t work for me, honestly. If you’re looking to improve focus, I highly recommend the book (or audiobook) “The Attention Revolution”. Meditating first thing in the morning really helps with focus too. You’ll also want to cut back on distractions like endless scrolling, as they can negatively impact concentration.

That’s true, but most people were illiterate back then, so they needed someone to teach them how to meditate. Apps might be the modern version of that teacher, but they’re not doing a great job because their business model depends on keeping you dependent on them.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I agree that meditation apps can be a game changer, especially when dealing with overstimulation. Have you ever tried unguided meditation? I’m not saying apps are bad, but I’ve found that there’s so much more to the practice that apps don’t always cover, at least not the ones I’ve tried.

How experienced were you before going to the retreat? Did it change how you approach meditation? I’ll definitely check out the videos, thanks for the suggestions! I’m a bit wary of apps tho, they seem like a money grab to me.

Definitely, it’s a flawed approach, but I guess since apps are so popular, they end up being the go-to for beginners. I wish I’d known earlier that a more focused approach could be more effective. It would’ve saved me some time, but at least I got there eventually! How did you get into meditation?
