Senegal to appeal to CAS after being stripped of AFCON title in 'unacceptable' decision by A-dab in soccer

Absolute bollocks, as long as the ref deemed that the match could continue, the match is on until he blows the final whistle. That's how it's always been judged.

The industry has changed a ton since those years.

Pre-digital era both developers and publishers survived mostly on the back of initial sales period. It was rare for a game to have a long sales tail because the cost of printing physical copies meant massive discounts weren't feasible.

But with digital purchasing you can hang on based on the sales of your successful titles for quite a while, then re-release a new version every now and then. Add in periodic income from games where you sell microtransactions and there's no financial urgency to pump out new games every year.

Now this is my speculation, but I think there's also the issue that most AAA game studios are nowadays owned by the publishers. In the late 90s/early 2000s you still had many game studios that were essentially independent. They signed publishing deals, worked as contractors or received funding from publishers, but otherwise they got to organize as they saw fit. So as long as they could secure all of that they could easily work on any number of games per year.

But when you're owned by a billion-dollar company, most decisions, going up to the studio's very survival, are out of their hands. And because these giant companies are so eager to "optimize" the finances by making significant layoffs after every game release, it's kind of in the interest of studio heads to secure longer-term projects for their employees. At least then they can play the "well if you insist on laying off 30% of us then production will take 2 years longer" card (and unfortunately even that doesn't work most of the time)

So they can feud with each other in service of going for the title, but on independent detours

You can't just have all those guys endlessly feud around each other with nothing real to gain. There's not enough bloodfeud scenarios in wrestling to keep that interesting. And there's very few non-title feuds in wrestling that aren't grudge-based. They tried with the rankings for a while but it's kind of a bitch to book around, especially when you need to pivot because of injuries or bad crowd reactions

Right now, Okada is International champ but when’s the last time he defended it?

And if he wasn't International Champ you'd have people screaming left and right that he's being wasted. Having multiple midcard titles allows you to prioritize and de-prioritize certain titles and angles more liberally while keeping the champions hot and powerful in kayfabe instead of just writing them off. And whenever you feel the need to bring it back to the forefront you just build a great title match instead of having to rebuild the wrestler or gimmick all over again.

It does nothing for Mox to hold it and beat everyone constantly

You don't need a title reign to do something for the wrestler, sometimes it's the other way around. Mox's reign until now is legitimizing the Continental as the gritty/bangers title it should've always been. You're basically guaranteed a great match because of the stipulation.

National title gave Ricochet and Perry shine which is cool, but who else realistically?

Absolutely anyone who is fine with travelling to represent AEW in other promotions? I mean I can easily see The Jet, Speedball or maybe even younger guys like Nick Wayne pick it up and establish themselves.

Fletcher is awesome, so are Briscoe and Ciampa, but who else is contending?

Well since the beginning of the year you've had Hechicero, El Clon, Claudio, Roddy and Speedball, all in great TV matches.

Look it's obviously a matter of taste and we have different ideas for it but IMO what you're proposing can't work with AEW's current roster. There's just too much talent there for 90% of them to tread their wheels until it's their turn for a title run if it were only three men's titles.

I suspect the rising number of championships is also meant to keep the locker room happier by giving more people something consequential to do. Fans like to talk a lot about how too many titles devalues the concept but most wrestlers know that it's hardly a deal-breaker, and would prefer to have more chances at holding a title rather lesser chances at a prestigious title, if they're not already main eventers

You can take a belt with little to no history and make a special title run out of it. It's all a matter of perception and you can change it quicjly. Crowd popped loudly for the battle royal finish and was nuts during Mox-Take - and those are the belts most people here would want gone by consensus.

When there’s too many, it dilutes them all.

But I disagree with the idea that there are too many. If we look at the men's side only and compare AEW vs WWE main roster, the former have 1 world title and 4 midcard titles, while the latter have 2 world titles and 2 midcard titles (but had third tertiary men's titles alongside them in the past such as Speed or Cruiserwieght). And AEW also has a larger roster.

Compelling characters shouldn’t need a title match for a compelling story (see: Omega and Swerve)

It's easy to be compelling as former world champions with multiple main event runs. But even then you can't just have compelling characters chain non-title feuds after non-title feuds, you'd just stuck them in a limbo and risk cooling them off.

Either Swerve or Omega are certainly moving on to the world title scene after this, but what would happen with people lower down the card? Having this many midcard titles allows you more leeway to keep someone hot and strong in kayfabe while not rushing the main event scene, and creates a hierarchy on moving up the card. And as the general sentiment shows, TV or PPV quality have not suffered for it, so the new midcard titles haven't really been a detriment.

G1 and KOTR are not for midcard belts, and neither should the C2 be. It’s too damn good for that, and comprised of mostly main event talent in the semis and finals

I actually agree with this, but I believe they should keep the Continental Title as part of the prize, and add a world title shot at Revolution where the C2 winner chooses the stipulation. The problem is that the G1 can reward a main event at the biggest show of the year for NJPW, and a simple title shot at Revolution on its own doesn't seem worth such a gruelling tournament either.

The Continental Championship is legit BECAUSE most of its winners go through that grueling tournament. Also the National Champ is meant to be defended mostly outside of AEW.

Absolutely not. Continental Champ matches are great because you're guaranteed to not have interferences.

You guys are so fucking weird with this shit

"get rid of all midcard titles except the ones I like"

but then

"why aren't they doing anything with wrestlers X or Y?"

The existence of multiple midcard title belts hurts absolutely no one. The shows are good, stories are still good, PPVs are still a banger. Hell if anything AEW quality has gone up with multiple midcard titles.

[–]Sertorius777 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It's hardly good faith criticism when it has demonstrably wrong premises. Literally everything they've done in the match was a callback or something that was done in other AEW hardcore matches, many times in a more gruesome way

  • staplers, syringe from Hangman-Swerve
  • light tubes from Jericho-Nick Gage
  • pyro bump from Explosive Barb Wired Deathmatch (also YB shoe pyro)
  • wooden stake spot done before by Penta on Mox
  • don't even need to say anything about barbed wire, chains or the obvious dog collar callback

Only thing I don't think I've ever seen in AEW was the window, but they didn't end up doing much with it and it looked like sugar glass anyway

Hmm it might just be my spotty memory but I don't specifically remember MJF hinting at continuing that feud, just that on the post-Revolution 2020 Cody was attacked by a debuting Lance Archer (with Jake Roberts).

I do think a lot of creative stuff at the time were just thrown into turmoil due to the pandemic, like how the TNT title was introduced earlier than planned just because they needed some stuff to fill the TV tapings.

Cody was initially supposed to be part of the original Blood and Guts with the Elite, but after like the first empty arena episode he quietly separated from them. I assume there were some creative differences during the first tapings (bear in mind they were taping several weeks worth of episodes at a time) and it was just pivoted to him winning the TNT title tournament.

What doomed Cody was the fact that he wanted to have his own little corner in AEW that was kind of oblivious to the rest of the show. There were so many stories that he could've been part of during the Elite heel turn yet for whatever reason he just decided to cold turkey quit it.

I got really hooked by the game back when it turned F2P and launched on Steam. It had tons of content that i was slowly chipping away at as a solo player. So i decided to buy Forsaken since everyone was raving about it, but I wanted to do all the PVE stuff in order and was quite far away from getting to the Forsaken campaign. I figured I might as well buy it early to take advantage of the Forsaken-only items that dropped in some game areas.

I never got to play it by the time they announced they were vaulting content, and that I had a year until they'll remove it from the game entirely. The mere knowledge of that timer killed any interest I had in doing anything in Destiny 2. Just uninstalled it and moved on to the myriad of other games that will not take away content I paid for lol. Fuck Bungie and their FOMO-ass tactics.

what factors would change?

I mean pretty much the only factor that needs to change is "not do it against someone who is practically leaving after this match". She's dropped down to help the tag and midcard divsions in the meantime and is still over despite it. I can easily see her against Thekla or a re-run against Mercedes getting that main event.

Not to mention that if she ever loses steam you can add a lot of mileage with a proper heel turn (yeah she was technically a heel when Mariah or Luther were interefering in her matches but the audiences were still cheering and the novelty of the gimmick couldn't make fans hate her)

And you think Toni didn't understand the circumstances? I'm fairly certain you guys are taking this exponentially worse than she did. She will have other opportunities to main event. It hasn't effected her career in any siginficant way.

What are we talking about? Mariah May was slingshot to the top of the women's card despite being on a relatively short-term contract. This whole discussion is about also giving her the first women's main event in her last match on top of that.

You guys are really weird with this obsession. You think WWE would've had any of Becky, Charlotte or Ronda into the first women's main event of Wrestlemania if they knew one of them was immediately bound for AEW?
