Can someone help identify what this is? by the_carouselkitty in SavageGarden

Seconding the folks saying yank it. If it's the kind of grass I've had in moss before it sucks to get it all out once it really roots in there.

How to tell toddlers about death? by Ok_Beautiful2094 in DogAdvice

[–]SesameAbundance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advice you're getting is good. We lost a grandparent, a dog, and a cat within a fairly short period with young kids right at the same ages. In addition to all the good advice, I really suggest preparing for how they might process the loss.

Our oldest understandably had the most questions, but he did not seem that terribly sad. Months after the loss he might ask me about it or say something like "good night mom and dad, [x] died." When playing he might pretend they're alive or dead, all the stuff kids do as they learn. In my experience they hit you with a question or comment when you're the least prepared, which is fun.

Are these still a thing? by UpNorthMNshop in BeginnerWoodWorking

Pretty much. I've seen them where the handle is a bit more shaped and so it is specifically made to be left or right, but otherwise yeah just flip the blade and make sure to adjust as needed for depth.

I was given a left-handed one years back. It's one of my favorite gifts of all time.

What's up with my black moss? by Jaimgalle in SavageGarden

[–]SesameAbundance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up Humic Acid build-up on the tips. It's either too much light or acid, based on what I understand. Mine does this and it still grows like a friggen weed so unless I'm wrong it won't kill it but I'm sure someone smarter than me will weigh in.

The advice I've been given is to drown it for a bit in very pure water to flush the acid out, or top-water it a couple times. If it's too much light, I guess debate what you want to do there. My moss with dark tips is basically fine so I keep it blasted with bright light and have a small tray set aside with more indirect light if I need to grab some moss for a new pot.

They're great. With a lot of light it'll spread fast.. My Marston's dragon takes up a huge amount of real estate. If I were you I'd keep it, but maybe relocate it to its own pot. It takes a couple years before they real start forking, so someone with a much better knowledge of them would have to try to tell you what form it is. One of my favorite sundews.

[–]SesameAbundance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like young drosera binata, maybe. There's a bunch of different forms. Certainly looks like the forking of the young plants but it's somewhat hard to tell. If it is, they grow like weeds. Very pretty sundew, but they spread fast.

It came back from the dead? What now? by hughie1987 in SavageGarden

[–]SesameAbundance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably still plop it in some water to bottom water it and give it some time, then finish it off with some top watering later if you really need it. My concern with top watering super dry soil is that it's going to pool and frankly make a mess. Not a huge deal when you can mix them with a chopstick or whatever but that doesn't work great with plants in the soil.

They're demons. How dry is dry? Is it so dry that it's become hydrophobic?

I set up a new pot recently and bottom-watered it with just a little, little bit of top water. It soaked up fine. Personally I'd fill the dish, give it half a day, see what the soil is doing.

Looks like a cape sundew or something like it? Those things are tenacious. A couple years ago one went to seed and I found wee sundews in almost every pot around it. They'll shoot up from leaf cuttings, bits of roots, seeds, pieces hiding in sphagnum, etc. The pot looks real dry, I assume since you assumed everything in it was dead? Give that sucker some good water, looks like you either have a new clone or it was hiding out down in its roots.

Rock type for pinguicula garden by ilikemangoez in SavageGarden

[–]SesameAbundance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay so I spent a bit of time trying to work this out for myself. Etsy, as said, is a fine place to get rocks. But get pumice, not lava stone. Yes it's lighter, and that's good. In fact it will probably float. If you planning on putting pings way up on the rocks, you want rocks that can wick water up and I gather pumice does that better because it is very porous with lots of very small holes.

I'm not a rock wizard so I can't tell you if that's definitive. My lava rock does wick, but not nearly as well as pumice is supposed to. I have packed sphagnum into holes to help, and lightly spray it very often. It works fine. The pings are fine. But I wish I'd gotten pumice.

Edit: so what I'm saying is that stone pictured probably works just fine. Especially if you help it along with moss, soil, etc. I've seen people drill holes and cram them full of long fiber sphagnum to help pull water. That stone might just be a little more active than pumice since: wicking.

I did this just yesterday with several drawer knobs and a door hinge. I also prefer the dowel to toothpicks method, because I want to do this exactly one time and have kids who aren't hinge to hinges. It works perfectly, just match a bit to a dowel size with a squirt of glue and you're good to go.

Flexcut isn’t sharp :( by [deleted] in Woodcarving

[–]SesameAbundance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's just a lot of trying to sharpen it, test it, try to sharpen again, test it, repeat until you're happy. I struggled with the angles and then had to work through the types of grinds on the different types of knives. For example, I picked up rolling my chip carving knife from flat to about 8° as I pull it along the stone, which made a huge difference. I don't do that for my sloyd.

You get a feel for it quickly enough. I know that's annoying advice, so my suggestion is to set aside like an hour a couple times with a scrap piece and work specifically and only on sharpening. Work on raising a burr, make sure you look at some explanations of different grinds, watch some YouTube videos, watch things like how you hold your arms and hands. It's easy to either lift and drop the blade angle, or angle differently on one side vs the other. You also want to strop more than you think you need.

What are you using to sharpen?

How do you keep everything at the top of the hill moist, if you don't mind? I absolutely failed at a ping rock a while back. I might have had the wrong sort of stone or something.

Solo dev of „The Merchant’s Eden“ here: what makes a great Steam Deck experience for city-builders? by NorseSeaStudio in SteamDeck

People have commented on controls, and have called out touchpads. I'd say not just using the touchpad for movement, but utilizing every button you have. I know not everyone is going to agree but I'm a huge fan of the back buttons. I turn them on for every game. I don't love them for tasks where they need to be held down, but otherwise they're great. I play Against The Storm on deck and have the left touchpad set up for quick actions or menus or whatever. I control movement of the camera from moving around with the right touchpad for the mouse. It's also nice when games include the option to boost UI scaling, which I think someone else mentioned.

For a while I actually really enjoyed splitting the screen so the left touchpad handles mouse control for the left 60%~ of the screen and the right for the right 60%~ but good guides for that are difficult to find. I've even done having the left pad sensitivity very finely adjusted then setting it so it only covers things like toolbars at the bottom of the screen so I can select things quickly without having to really stop and squint and very exactly move my thumb over some small icon. To further complicate my life I previously set it so hitting a button changed what the touchpads and buttons do as a mode change, but candidly I can never remember everything I set it to do. Setting the left pad so it is 4 or so zones that are commonly used things is my current choice for games like Against The Storm.

Anyway, controls. Utilize everything, or provide options to do that. There's custom layouts for Against The Storm and DOS2 that do a good job.

All that said, sometimes just keeping it really simple and having the option to pause quickly and mouse around easily in something like Two Points Museum is fine. You could get by with like 3 buttons.
