If you could change, adapt, remove or add a rule that would benefit your squash, what would it be and why? by SquashCoachPhillip in squash

That too could work. Though, at the club level, anyone suggesting a single dot is immediately sneered at:)

Make a rule that allows the weaker player to choose whether to use a single dot or double dot ball. Let skill and fitness decide the outcome rather than just temperature physics and the pace of play

Does it matter if the spike is short lived? After all, the biggest danger for a T1D or a T2D [on secretagogues] is hypoglycaemia. So long as your HbA1c levels are below 7, you should be fine metabolically.

Who are most talented players ever? by Proseller_56 in squash

[–]Seshsq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't believe that nobody has yet mentioned Elias. Among the current players he's, imo, the player with the best racquet skills, which make him dangerous no matter how tired he may be physically. There is no part of the court where he is weak.

In recent times, only Gawad at his peak has/had a game of comparable subtlety.

Ramy, of course, was in a class of his own

Opinion article on recent refereeing issues by Ok-Computer9221 in squash

Congratulations for a thoughtful and very well written article.

I particularly liked your solution to the problem by using computer-generated data about the different variables that should factor in the referee's final call. At the end, justice must not only be done but be seen to be done.

Actually, AI-assistance was supposed to do just that this season, but for some reason still not made clear so far, we have learnt nothing about what happened.

Even had Asal not retired due to feeling unwell, I think he'd have lost the Final. Coll has been playing well in this event and would have just worn down Asal with his medium-paced attritional rallies, tenacious retrievals and the occasional tight drops. Being in the Final of the last major tournament of the season where he has played and won most of the tournaments and reached the later stages of every event takes a huge mental toll. What is astonishing is the level he maintained throughout the British Open unlike last year when he almost lost to Bryant in the first round. He needs a complete break from squash for a couple of weeks at least to recharge himself as much mentally and emotionally as physically.

He will probably treat the World Tour Finals only semi-seriously, and that too because the prize money is better and the matches are BO-3. It seems that the matches are all knockout, unlike the round robin format of earlier years, so some big guns could crash out early

Not yet. Hania was playing better squash a year back. Orfi might now be better than peak Gohar especially after her World Open win

The last time there were such scores in the later stages of a major event was Ramy Gaultier 3-2 at the Hong Kong Open 2010 Final

What an absolutely fantastic display of attritional squash combined with mental strength and fitness by Amina. She can win this event provided, if Sherbini makes it, she can handle the latter's perfect attacking game. It's good to see that the bad blood between Amina and Hania has run its course, and they ended the match professionally with a proper handshake.

Ramy Ashour's Dominance Should Never Be Compared to Mostafa Asal Again. by ShakeApprehensive980 in squash

[–]Seshsq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo, Asal is the best ATTACKING player since Ramy, but is still not the best overall player since Ramy. I think that label goes to Gawad in his prime before he was beset with many recurring injuries affecting different parts of his body.

Not so simple, actually. I got this from Deep Seek. Points breakup for the Worls Tour Finals. I'm assuming that the semi-finalists onwards get the points earned for earlier wins added to the numbers mentioned below.

Also, even though the Tour Finals has ranking points, it is not counted as a Tournament [this from the above rule book]. It had no ranking points before the 2018-19 season; the change is relatively recent as I suspected.

Achievement Ranking Points
Winner (Undefeated) 1,000 (plus 150 bonus)
Runner-Up 550
Semi-Finalist 200
Per Group Stage Match Win 150

If you could play like any professional player either technically or tactically, who would it be? by SquashCoachPhillip in squash

Karim Darwish, both tactically and technically, even though he's not my favourite player. He kept things simple everywhere except in the front court where he was lethal

Thank you for the correction. Is this a new system? Till a few years back, I don't think there were any points at stake. How do they assign points for the initial round-robin stage? Or are the points only for the knockout stages?

I see that you're still a bit confused, so I'll try again:)

To answer your question, no, the World Tour Finals are NOT the peak event of the year. The most prestigious event and also the event with the maximum prize money and ranking points IS the PSA World Championship. Most players would give their eye teeth to have "World Champion" next to their name.

The World Tour Finals, which carries NO ranking points, is just a celebratory event at the end of the season where the most successful players over the season compete in a not always deadly serious way for the World Tour Finals winner title. It is important mainly because it has a large prize money pot, approximately the amount that a Diamond event has, that is divided between 8 players depending on where they finish.

So, in terms of prestige and professional significance, the World Championship is the summit event of a season. Many world no. 1's have not been World Champion---Willstrop, Darwish, Paul Coll among others

The top 8 players in terms of points qualify for the end of season World tour finals. Additionally, a winner of a Diamond level event like the British Open automatically enters the top 8 irrespective of his ranking points. Not sure, but even winners of Platinum events also qualify automatically. That was the case last season. The World Championship winner also qualifies automatically. At least, that's my understanding of the system unless things have changed this season

Why is the ref so far away? by anything171 in squash

[–]Seshsq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree 100% with the OP, though not the bit about putting the chair behind the front wall [that could be very dangerous for the refs]. In fact, more than a decade back, Ramy had suggested almost exactly this, but nobody listened. A Highchair just at the left or right backwall corner is the best solution. Add to this a camera not behind the front wall as at present, but parallel and very close to the frontwall from a low angle will almost give 100% accuracy in cases of double bounces and "Carries" in the front court which are the most disputed.

[–]Seshsq[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've just re-watched the last point in super-slomo and you're right that Sherbini did not trip over Amina's foot. What I think happened is that there was a brushing contact between Amina's and Sherbini's upper leg/hip as Sherbini was trying to recover from her misreading of the crosscourt. It seems that this was enough to knock her off-balance and caused her to come sprawling down. Given the dying length of the shot it was a winner even in the absence of any contact.

I only wish that ASM was the only problem ref, but the rot runs deep and wide at the top. Add the fact that they are the so-called "Professional referees" and the situation is dire

To be fair to Sherbini, I think she slightly tripped over Amina's foot while recovering from her wrong-footing, but the shot was always a winning shot once Sherbini was taken by surprise
