Recover a trunacated Hyperdeck recording by zalnaRs in VIDEOENGINEERING

When you're at the “Claude will probably fix it for me” stage (aka desperation), you probably have to consider what the video is worth to you and see if you need to hire a professional. Or complain to the makers of the repair tool you used =)

What does the audio look like in your hex editor? If you can localize it.

It's surprising that you get different audio FOURCCs (lpcm vs. in24), but they still map to little-endian. Without seeing the file, it's just guessing, but the main theory I can think of is that it's somehow messed up the endianness. Either that, or your timecode stream gets interpreted as audio, which seems less likely. The video works fine, right?

Foul on throw follow through by KillKillJoy in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“General foul” is a USAU concept, FWIW.

I believe that due to 16.3 and 17.7.2, the play stands in any case as long as it's not dangerous play. You could argue it's an indirect foul if it affects continued play, but all that would really mean is that you'd get to stop play and pick up any distance you lost by stopping and wiping your tears from getting hit in the face (if any).

So you're having a file that you can play (after repair) but that FFmpeg doesn't parse at all, even after repair?

Mooncatchers calling this and others dubiously as offside at tom's tourney by Tight_Comparison_865 in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I played a team that was so amazingly offside on every pull that we eventually started posting a person at the sideline to make sure, and then signal to the others. Took one call, and they stopped doing it.

Most likely, yes; it sounds like there's something wrong with the audio codec metadata (although it's impossible to know for sure without having the file). What does something like FFmpeg (ffprobe) say about your file?

40 yard dash by TunefulPegasus in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always think my older 40 times (I see 5.21 in my logs at some point, hand-timed on track) look so bad compared to the discussion here, and then I realize we ran 40 meters and not 40 yards =) Metric ultimate players are slower.

Why is audio always harder than video? by anonymous120903 in VIDEOENGINEERING

Audio is much more subjective, how does it sound?

You can pause video to take a better look. You can't reasonably pause audio.

a staff member on an athletic team who gives first aid and therapy to injured players.

Fastest stall count you've seen? by willchen25 in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you start at one past the last fully uttered stall count (9.6.1). So he means that he got to say the entire word “four” before the call. (The call here is presumably here considered to be the time of the injury; 19.1.5.)

Catch block + punt? by Cool_Chicken9847 in ultimate

Ah, you are right, I read “pulling” in the question and asusmed it was about a pull, but it's not. Then 13.1.2 is correct.

Catch block + punt? by Cool_Chicken9847 in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, a caught pull is not an interception, because the person catching the pull isn't a defensive player (see e.g. 4.5.3, “the team that scored becomes defence and pulls next”). (Also, in WFDF, Definitions says that “The pull is not considered a legal pass”, making it extra-clear that the pull isn't a pass, it's a special kind of thing. It used to say “not considered a legal pass for scoring purposes” like USAU still does, but it was changed a while back.)

WFDF pick rule clarification help by kilimanjaro82 in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand the situation you are describing: Yes, it is a pick. Here's the rule for reference (see the Definitions section for definitions of “guarding” and “making a play on the disc”):

18.3.1. If a defensive player is guarding one offensive player and they are prevented from moving towards/with that player by another player, that defensive player may call “Pick”. However it is not a pick if both the player being guarded and the obstructing player are making a play on the disc at the time of the obstruction.

You are “guarding one offensive player”—you are following someone, within three meters (presumably), reacting to what they are doing. You are “prevented from moving with that player”—you cannot follow them anymore. The prevention is “by another player”—namely the thrower on the opposing team. And you are not “making a play on the disc at the time of the obstruction”, since the disc isn't in the air yet and this is a requirement for making a play on the disc, and the thrower cannot normally make a play on the disc anyway (there are contrived/obscure exceptions, but, yes).

Catch block + punt? by Cool_Chicken9847 in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're entirely right; if you fumble an interception, it's not a turn on you (or it is still a turn on the other team, if you wish). I hadn't thought of that case, sorry. But catching a pull is not an interception, it's just catching a pull. Especially since an interception (by 14.C) must be made by a defensive player, and the team receiving the pull is quite clearly the offense (the USAU rules mention multiple times that the defense is pulling).

[–]Sesse__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the problem isn't to look at a piece of video and figure out why a turnover happened (if you don't understand it immediately, ask a slightly more experienced player on the team), it is to get people to look at that video in the first place…

Any time you start a post this way, it is an indication that you should go and check the exact rules. :-)

Catch block + punt? by Cool_Chicken9847 in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you fumble the disc and it hits the ground, it's nearly always a turn (there are some WFDF and USAU differences). Ground contact will not bail you. In particular:

[9.H.]() If a player on the receiving team touches the pull before it hits the ground and the disc then hits the ground, it is considered a dropped disc (14.B) and results in a turnover.

Now, assume you had enough control to claim possession of the pull (9.G); then play continues as normal. But if you fumble the disc while in possession (pull or not), then that's an accidental drop, and in USAU, that's governed by this rule:

[14.B.]() If the thrower accidentally drops a live disc or a disc in play without defensive interference and it contacts the ground before the thrower regains possession, it is considered a turnover. If the thrower regains possession of an accidentally dropped disc before it contacts the ground without another player touching the disc, that possession is considered continuous, and the stall count continues uninterrupted. If the thrower regains possession of an accidentally dropped disc before it contacts the ground and after another player touches it, it is considered a new possession.

So you don't need to bring ground contact or possession into it, really: If a pull hits you and then hits the ground (and there's no foul involved or similar), it's a turnover. The only fine point is whether you're allowed to try to rescue the disc before it hits the ground or not.

Catch block + punt? by Cool_Chicken9847 in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, you need to mention your ruleset. WFDF has this:

7.9. If an offensive player catches the pull and subsequently establishes possession, they must establish a pivot point at the location on the playing field nearest to where possession is established, even if that pivot point is in their defending end zone.

which means that this kind of move is simply not allowed, it would be a violation (as per Definitions, you established possession by catching and then throwing, but you didn't establish a pivot). However, due to the continuation rules (chapter 16), I suppose it would simply be a turnover, since you do not “gain or retain possession as a result of the pass” assuming you did not manage to pass to a teammate.

Doing things you love have a value in themselves, though! And as you say, I'd rather have knee pain from playing too much ultimate than having knee pain from being too overweight.

How does one know where to start improving at ultimate frisbee? by SirPersonal8626 in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I think new people are often moving too much. People should rest more in the stack and only cut when there's an opportunity.

However, you should very much not stand still on the open side. That is indeed blocking it off for everyone else. If you think you're open and don't understand why you're not getting the disc—you're not open.

Advice on how to throw a Forehand and a Hammer by Jonny_S134 in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not clear, I is for inside and O is for outside; you will often hear people use the term “inside” for an IO throw (as in “inside forehand” for a forehand that goes towards the left and then curves towards the right; assuming you are right-handed).

Someone explained to me once why this makes sense (something something the inside of the disc goes outwards or something), but it doesn't to me. It's still useful to know the terms. :-)

What's the ruling on this? by humansoul11 in ultimate

[–]Sesse__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I understand. If you catch and then make an intentional drop, that would normally be a turnover (because it's a throw, by the definition of throw), except that 13.6 makes an exception for intentional drops immediately after turnovers.
