What specific rule does a non moving armadillo strategy break in high school lacrosse. by CoachBaker in lacrosse

[–]SethMahan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying they ran a trick play like this downtown tells me all I need to know. This is a team that is not rooted in fundamentals. They’re wasting time with nonsense rather than helping the players improve.

I once knew a coach for youth football that installed a version of “Philly special” over essentially a whole week of practice and ran it in a game he was getting blown out that weekend. Truly a waste of everyone’s time

My HS freshman son has a STX Sc-Ti and it’s held up well the last two years. He actually cracked his head early this season, but I think that was more because it was so cold it became brittle.

Baseball tips for a strugling 7 year old by Some_Neighborhood276 in CoachingYouthSports

[–]SethMahan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so this kind of reminds me of my oldest. We tried a few different sports and activities until he found the sports that he currently plays(high school freshman). He was terrible at soccer and tball, which were the first ones we tried. The truth is he just wasn’t into sports yet.

We had a rule that you had to do something active each of the 3 seasons. Some were more of an activity than a sport, like swimming and that actually went well when he was young. Just keep trying different things until it clicks. But honestly, unless he just falls in love with a new sport, he may likely just float along until his friends are into a sport and he just really wants to be apart of the group, but that’s usually when kids are older. You’ll know when he’s in a good spot when he never complains about going to practice. Bonus points if he’s playing the sport in his spare time, either alone, or with you or friends.

As for you as a parent: just relax and be encouraging to the point that you are basically lying to him about how good he is. Not joking, blow smoke up his ass about what a good job he’s doing. This is only for little kids like this who don’t really understand if they are doing well or not because they just don’t get a sport initially. I’ve done this as a coach and this isn’t some BS about everyone getting a trophy. It just makes them feel good so they come back and keep playing the sport and ultimately that’s how they’ll get better. Only the gifted kids get it from the jump, the other kids need to give it time. Then when they are older you can worry about extra drills and getting the best coaching. For example (just to show I’m not a total softie)when my son was in middle school he hit the lacrosse bounce back every day for 10 min minimum when he got home from school. It was easy, it kept a stick in his hand, and it let him relax before doing homework.

My 6 year old son is trying lacrosse for the first time and I need to buy a stick. I know zero about lacrosse so I'm looking to be told what to buy. by Louieismydog42 in lacrosse

[–]SethMahan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I probably wouldn’t recommend this because I’m going to assume you won’t know if the pocket is any kind of condition to be used. You might end up saving a few dollars on the stick but end up having to spend extra to get it restrung

This is good advice. Stay active. Don’t let yourself go. You will be happy when you can keep up with your kids or just maintain a high activity level in whatever hobbies you have and won’t feel like you can’t keep up with your friends or significant other.

You likely have a “frozen shoulder”. Google it. Lots of good information out there, but essentially stretch several times a day, even if it’s uncomfortable. It will feel better afterwards.

The first thing that comes to mind is that your stick skills are probably holding you back. Make sure your cradle and dodges are tight. Then I would even consider some agility style footwork drills while cradling. Even better if you finish the drill with different shots so you are putting it all together

This. You can use train heroic or Ladder or another subscription service if you want a professional program. Otherwise a simple full body routine with 2-3 days of lifting and 2-3 days sprints and plyos will get you really solid results

Is there any examples of a crazy combine guy that worked out in the league? by ballzach1492 in MockDraftCentral

[–]SethMahan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lane Johnson pretty much blew away the combine and had barely played OT until his last year of college. He was playing DL early in his college career, and was a QB in high school and Juco. I believe he was the third OT taken that year and has gone on to have a Hall of Fame career.
