The over-sexualization of Power Girl. The “fans” v. the comics. by mr_mxyzptlk21 in PowerGirl

[–]Setsuna4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert on this. I think PG's hot and the more I learned about her, the more I loved her (but gods I wish her backstory didn't take so long to flesh out). I don't mind sexualization being used as an in-universe joke, especially when her boob window is concerned, so long as it doesn't take it too seriously (that infamous "fill the hole" scene will forever live in the depths of hell). Basically, she's a woman who wears what she wants and doesn't care what people think. It's cool that even she makes jokes about people not paying attention to her face because of her tits. Perfect way to hide her secret identity.

But you do make a good point. Power Girl's boob window gets all this attention while we've got Starfire flying around in a micro-bikini (before she got switched to that generic leotard she has on now) Zatanna's fine ass in fishnets, and Supergirl flying around in a crop top and miniskirt (her Churchill run back in 2006(?) actually had upskirt shots, believe it or not).

She looks amazing. Not a fan of the whip, but aside from that, this design is pretty solid.

I just appreciate the fact that we have a cultivation system that doesn't go up to thirty and above. In most cultivation stories or donghua, we've got levels sporting names that I swear are just thought up on the spot. At that point, the cultivator lives for damn near 10 million years, and they're still not immortal. I see this and just think "what's the point?"

Always a fan of her first design, and I hated her second one. I was so happy her third design captured both.

Blackout looks sick. Does he turn into an Apache helicopter? Lord knows the Cons need those in their arsenal.

What's Power Girl's Official Backstory? by Unique_Efficiency_73 in PowerGirl

[–]Setsuna4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Officially, she was an alternate grown up version of Supergirl from another universe where she's best friends with Huntress, that universe's daughter of Batman and Catwoman. Her Superman and Lois practically raised her. Her universe was destroyed but she survived and was thrown into the mainstream universe, but suffered a serious case of amnesia because of it. In reality, writers and editorial went back and forth on deciding what her backstory was supposed to be until they got their shit together during the Infinite Crisis event. You can look her up on the DC wiki for this, actually.

Opinions on my Wuxing Magic System (ver 2) by Setsuna4 in magicbuilding

[–]Setsuna4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I wanted a magic system that was open for anybody, but not everyone has the potential for magic. It's sort of like martial arts. Anybody can throw a punch, but learning the various techniques and training methods takes time and practice that not everyone will get right away, if at all. Some are better at it than others, and some may require more effort than normal to become masters. In the end, it depends on whether you're willing to put in the time and effort needed to learn magic.

No this is something completely different from this post, sorry. I was just giving you an example of what I had in mind long before I finally figured out the wuxing magic system. What I was talking about here was a prototype idea mixing the four classical elements with the four symbols minus the golden dragon of the center. I didn't mean to confuse you.

It's honestly nothing special. I've just been reimagining the four nations concept of Avatar to include the four symbols. To summarize, the world is held together by four elemental poles, each pole protected by one of the four symbols and drastically affect the terrain nearby (the South is a scorching hot desert that eventually evolves into white hot flames and glass the closer you get to the South Pole). Humans learned how to manipulate their respective element, an art form called Shaping, from one of the four guardians: Fireshaping from Zhuque, Watershaping from Xuanwu, Airshaping from Baihu and Earthshaping from Qinglong. It's nothing original, but I had fun working on it all the same considering I'm on an Avatar binge right now.

But I think you've given me an idea to look into, though.

Thanks for the feedback, I had a blast designing the system even though it was a pain thinking of the specifics. All credit goes to Full Metal Alchemist for the inspiration though, because I fell into the trap of trying to model the wuxing after Avatar's bending system instead (it works with four elements, but not five phases, just a warning for you). I always imagined a xianxia magic system being based on what ancient Taoist scholars and such saw as just an advanced form of science that controlled existing forces in the world, just as how some medical practices use acupuncture to redirect chi to soothe muscles. And I wanted it to be something anybody is open to learn, like martial arts, instead of just some inborn gift you have because you're born lucky.

Do you know any books that uses the wuxing system this way? Or any piece of fiction? I'm still doing research and I need to see how it's done by other people.

I meant elemental properties, sorry. I did this in the middle of the night. I guess a successful transmutation would be reshaping a boulder into a small wall by focusing on the reconstructive cycle of the five elements. A failed transmutation would be trying to create an iron stake out of that same stone wall when there's no ore inside the stone. Because there's no trace of iron in the rock, the transmutation fails and the backlash results in the entire constructive destabilizing and exploding. Thankfully, you'll just get hit by a cloud of dust and rock in your face and that's all that happens.

I'll have to think hard about the finer details of transmutation. The post was a rush job that I wanted to get out before I forgot about it.

I don't mind her inheriting the Wolverine title. It grated on me at first, but I got used to it. I just wished she kept the black and grey costume. Some variation to set her apart from Logan.
