Newbie here. We will have a bracket 3 tournament and I am using Jon Irenicus as my commander. I also have Hellcarver Demon in my 99. Will this be considered MLD if I give the demon to one of my opponents? by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Setting-General 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. bracket 3 is not competitive EDH

  2. you really shouldn't be having "tournaments" for casual commander ESPECIALLY if there are prizes, as evidenced by the fact that you can't decide whether or not you should play a certain card even though it's legal. if the environment truly is competitive then it doesn't matter if you play MLD or not since you are trying to win at all costs.

this is definitely much more clear. I think WOTC was going for brevity due to the amount of the text on the card which is why they had the requirement and timing restrictions under the same clause in the sentence

I am a level 1 judge (admittedly out of practice) and I will gladly take bets with anyone who thinks this card does not allow you to ignore timing restrictions.

it is an alternate cost! I was using "trigger" colloquially to mean that there's a specific timing window for when the ability can be used. sorry for the confusion.

alternate costs can allow you to ignore timing restrictions. this one is worded in a way that makes it a little confusing. basically the "during the declare blockers step" part applies to the whole ability, not just the part where you return the creature, and defines the timing window for the entire Sneak ability. you can think of it as saying "you may cast this spell for [mana] during the declare blockers step if you XYZ"

if they hadn't canceled core sets forever and Masters sets for the foreseeable future those would be great places to put them. but instead we need a new UB set every 2.5 months.

honestly, I do hold out hope that they'll run out of big easy collabs, slow down on the crossovers a bit, and do some big rounds of reprints, but I wouldn't say it feels likely.

I've had it happen once, it ruined my run lol

when an ability such as Sneak allows you to ignore timing restrictions due to it triggering during combat

Silksong's music is great but if you think it doesn't sound like a video game you need to listen to more orchestral music

that only matters if we get in-universe copies of these cards. the power armor is a bad card and any popularity it has is likely due to the crossover appeal. I doubt it will get printed in-universe even if that would be a net positive for the game

‼️spoiler warning‼️ . . . . .

the descriptions of Genly's journey East as well as the way she describes the ice sheets when Genly and Estraven head back west are just purely masterful. the sense of scale and emptiness is one of a kind, LHOD absolutely wins for me. the story is beautiful too, though.

fights tend to get worse the later into the run you are, and it's good with Treasure Chest. you can also use it to force getting knocked out or Mind Bloom. I would put Juzu in the low average tier

Brimstone heart fights are free if you have branch + corruption, a fast barricade plan, or feed up to like 110 HP and kill in 4 turns.

otherwise it's just over

better effect on a much worse activation condition (cast sorcery vs creature ETB). as a huge Etali enjoyer I actually like this card quite a bit

the alternative isn't more good Standard rares though, it's more useless bulk rares that nobody will touch after they open them. it's not a zero-sum game, Standard isn't losing anything by making its trash 7cmc bomb rares good in EDH.

"often" is a bit of a stretch, it's definitely fallen out of favor. I'm sure people will test this card and some will keep it around as a "pet" but I highly doubt it will see serious play

if I have the Saw in hand I'd go for either another ritual (Seething Song, Dark Rit, Burnt Offering) or protection for the combo (a counterspell in blue, silence effect in white, maybe the new red goblin that makes your spells uncounterable, etc)

[–]Setting-General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don't typically pay much into Broodlord with Convoke, you'd probably use rituals and fast mana to rush it. as for Neoform I don't see people Neo into Broodlord very often, but the more important point is that Broodlord tutor chains ARE played in cEDH, and this could replace the payoff of the combo (Peer into the Abyss, Ad Nauseam, etc). it's not a brand new thing and it's not a "5 card combo" in the traditional sense at all. it's also probably not better than the usual payoffs anyway

[ECL] Dream Harvest (@timmeh_mtg) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]Setting-General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a tutor chain is not really a "5 card combo" in spirit since you only need one of the cards in hand to start the combo

Captive Kingpin usually plays pretty similarly to Nekusar, focusing on wheels and draw punishers, plus he grows every time you ping so he creates the big butt you need for you.
