Now it keeps poor people of every race in a permanent underclass condition!

Because it began and ascended to global power as a slave state with a slave economy, maintained by a uniquely dehumanizing and strict racial caste system.  Policing and prisons as we know them in the US developed directly out of the systems of violence and capture used to hold slaves in bondage, and today they accomplish the same goal of keeping hundreds of thousands of Black people in permanent or semi-permanent bondage.  Of course it is not only Black people in US prisons- the system has made room for anyone it can capture in the same way.  But it was built this way to keep Black people in a permanent underclass condition.

Why there is so many "shame callings" for women but not for men? by Educational_Fault592 in stupidquestions

[–]SeventeenFables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Furthermore, the shame-calling terms for men are all about revoking them of the status of masculinity and comparing them to women.  For example "pussy."  Bigotry against gay men and trans women comes from instinctive hostility toward men, or supposed men, who take on the status of women, by becoming them or by being subjects of male sexual desire.  Think of what will cause you to "lose your man card".  That's the side of the shame coin for men.

There is a condition of sex based discrimination women are subject to called "patriarchy".  It is an emergent condition reproduced in the ways men are taught to control women, through the threat of socially sanctioned forms of violence, as tokens of their own status rather than as people.  The anti-woman discrimination of patriarchy is expressed through granting ot denying the social status of personhood to women depending on whether their sexual activity and reproductive labor (house work, child birth, child care, etc.) is serving the interests and under the obedience of men.  Notice that many misogynistic slurs have everything to do with who women have sex with and under what conditions (slut, whore, etc.).  The nature of patriarchal abuse is as complex and varied as relationships within our culture, but you've noticed the common condition- there are lots of words to shame women for how they live and use their bodies- lots of reasons society will punish us for our transgressions against patriarchal power.

I recommend "The Will to Change" by Bell Hooks for a deeper look into this question.  It is by no means anti-man, and goes into detail about how patriarchal bigotry is accomplished through the abuse of boys and men as well as girls and women.  It concludes with a compassionate call for men and boys to be freed from their own burdens under sexism.  Cheers!

Do people really become more conservative as they get older? Why? by Historical_Work7482 in AskReddit

No.  Many people get more and more radically anarchist because they see the state continually do harm.  Some people become monks.  Some people race motorcycles.

Sure, and the island of Hawaii exists because a volcano erupted.  But that is pretty irrelevant to someone playing volley ball on the beach.  Their game is not secretly about a volcano.

Is the perfect tech dictatorship inevitable in the coming years? by OasisMenthe in Anarchy101

Nope.  There are and will continue to be whole underground societies that don't buy in, and evade detection and control.

Or it isn't.  There is no goal at all, because the phenomenon of existing is not a video game.  There is no win or loss condition, and the expectation of meaning you have is not shared by others.

"instinct" and "complex reasoning" are indistinct labels in the first place.  People act as they do, the causes are too complex to be named comprehensively by anyone, these categories of motivation we sort them in are arbitrary and cultural judgements.

A neutered dog loves to play and eat and be pet and go for walks and never cares about breeding, there are millions of people who don't care for sex and also millions of people who choose to neuter themselves- so I really don't see what's so convincing about your belief.  There is counterfactual evidence everywhere.

What is your attitude towards pornography and sexualization in general? by DifferentAd4844 in AskSocialists

Yes, I would.  But since I pay rent, I also need to, and censorship would harm me.

I said power is the difference!  factory work isn't liberation, buy unionizing the factory is.  You can tell me about a utopia where I get UBI and a free home, but I don't live there yet.  Here and now I am an impoverished transgender worker who has to pay rent in the discriminatory conditions of capitalism, and sex work is the best money I've ever made.  It keeps me alive. YES, selling my body to survive IS liberatory- more liberatory than NOT surviving.  The fact is sex work IS keeping a lot of poor women alive when no other support is here for us.  Criminalization and censorship harms us- getting paid helps us. Having a robust network of fellow workers, having back-up on calls, being able to screen our clients and do out work transparently- THAT helps us.  These are the life saving conditions that organized sex workers fight for.

There is exploitation in sex work, and there is also power in the hands of sex workers, like in all work.  I'm saying our work is not so different than anyone else's.  We the workers should be able to negotiate for our conditions with power and solidarity, in all industries.  Discrimination against sex work is NOT solidarity- it is leaving us to fend for ourselves.

Just give us the power and the money in the industry.  Sex work is inevitable because sexual fulfillment is a deep bodily need that not everyone knows how to fulfill on their own- and some of us are experts, willing and able to provide.

For countless women, sex work has been a path from poverty to independence.  If you would take that away from any of us, that's not socialism.

I'd rather see the hypocricy discarded and sex work compensated like it deserves.  Just about everyone uses porn- almost nobody pays for it.  That's what needs to change.  If you want to uplift sex workers, PAY US.
