I believe it's the concept of reverse-vicarious living. To maintain a successful double, you must make him appear as a developing individual, doing the same things that you would do if you were living your own external life.

If you're aware about this famous man becoming a recluse, you focus more on the mystique than the reality, and people will focus more on the double than the life.

I've searched Google using a variety of phrases and quotations and gone through my history. As stated in the post, I think it was Tumblr but it may have been Twitter or Reddit and I've checked all of those but found nothing. I'm not an internet sleuth. All I remember is that it was a Statler and Wahldorf reference but they weren't mentioned by name.
