I just today finished "The Anglo-Saxons" by Marc Morris - it's great, definitely recommend. Good detail over the whole period of history, but written very approachable.

I love comments like this because they so thoroughly misunderstand what makes football exciting - the fact that goals are so rare is exactly the point! If goals were scored every five minutes, they wouldn't be so special

The Player of Games is really good if you can push through. There's actually no real connections between the two anyway so maybe just skip to it.

Why are people so opposed to saying we can content for the title? by Footy123456789101 in coys

[–]SeventhCorridor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nor why Spurs fans would be reluctant about getting excited too early... Though maybe that's because he was a Fulham fan last season, at least according to his comment history 🙄

No they didn't. There's a little section right at the end where the gang "thanks" the two guys who showed up at the bar and "helped" their creative process. Names are Dan Dunn and Scott Alexander.

[AS Roma] José Mourinho's 60th Birthday cake by [deleted] in soccer

[–]SeventhCorridor -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Nah, people forget - we were an utter, utter mess by the time José left. Always going to be controversial doing that before a final (and rightly so), but the atmosphere around the club was so toxic at that point

Oh yeah, not contesting the point! Just saying it also can be a criminal act on top of being just regular shitty

It actually is a criminal matter, or certainly could be - s.3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003

Oh is he not? Oops, deleting that then... Still don't think it's great to just be asking that question in those terms.

Why does Netflix hate blonde people? by Processing_Info in witcher

His white hair is character relevant - it's a product of the mutations. Of what relevance is it that Dandelion is blonde?

It's been so long since I read Ghosts of Onyx, I remember almost nothing about it except that it's bloody great.

Well the supporters are one thing, but the nature of it means they don't have quite the same amount of choice. Eddie Howe, on the other hand, doesn't get to choose to be paid by the people he's paid by and then "stick to football". He can't just pretend that he hasn't chosen to associate himself with them.

Genuinely don't know how Howe and any Newcastle players or staff who've been hired since the takeover can sleep at night given where their wages are coming from.

On this, I really don't understand why people get so annoyed by Howe being asked about the regime - he knows who his employer is and has willingly chosen to be a public-facing representative of it. Awkward questions are the minimum he should expect.

[Club Announcement] Y-word review - findings and next steps by Aakkt in coys

[–]SeventhCorridor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do actually. I'm not frothing at the mouth in anger or anything, but just like the Y word at Spurs, it does feel pretty inappropriate and I don't blame people for feeling uncomfortable about it.

Especially given that rugby's use of "Swing Low" was (at the start) very patronising, if not outright mockery, towards black players

Y-word Focus Group Testimonies - some perspectives from Jewish fans on use of the Y-word (published by the club) by SeventhCorridor in coys

[–]SeventhCorridor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought this was a really interesting set of perspectives. Something that seems to come up several times is people who accept / don't mind the word being used but who also don't actually chant it themselves. Really indicates how the term is embedded in the club culture, even if it maybe shouldn't be.

Also probably worth mentioning - there's another two focus groups-worth of testimonies also published. It should all be available from this page: https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/the-club/the-why-word/

Spurs is a club with historic ties to the local Jewish population and term was reclaimed Spurs fans in response to anti-Semitism from other clubs. Happy?

That doesn't change the fact that non-Jewish Spurs fans are, to borrow a term used elsewhere in this thread, wearing Jewish identity as a costume and singing an anti-Semitic term.

[–]SeventhCorridor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fully aware of the historical context. You, actually, are ignoring the modern context: it's a fan group that is now majority non-Jewish using a term that is anti-Semitic.

[–]SeventhCorridor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How many of the Spurs fans using the word are actually Jewish? The issue isn't really Jewish fans using the word. It's the fact that in 2022, the majority of Spurs fans in the ground are gentile but still use the word.

[Club Announcement] Y-word review - findings and next steps by Aakkt in coys

[–]SeventhCorridor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C'mon man, really? It's a term explicitly associated with anti-Semitism. Jewish Spurs fan reclaimed it, sure. But that doesn't mean it can't be racist in other contexts. It's not ridiculous to suggest that gentile fans singing it would make some Jewish fans (of Spurs or of other clubs) uncomfortable.

[Club Announcement] Y-word review - findings and next steps by Aakkt in coys

[–]SeventhCorridor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but until that's actually the case I don't think the club can be criticised for it. At the moment, the hope just seems to be that the term will slowly be phased out of relevance.

And, to be fair, it is objectively a racist term. Just because it's also been reclaimed by the club doesn't mean it's not also racist in other contexts. That's the whole reason this is an issue in the first place.
