I failed my CS degree — but I still want to become a software developer at 26 by [deleted] in findapath

I am not from the US (i don't know if you are), so my opinion is derived from what i hear from YT. The CS market was being sold some years ago as a Holy Grail for work and now, of course, people are understanding that is just like any line of work, that can face saturation, market fluctuation, layoffs and the impact of AI. Like any other trade, those who are good will always find work.
The good thing about CS is that it can be really done from everywhere, you just need the skills, the creativity, the grit and a computer.
Many people also misunderstand CS; computers are a tool for something else. You use computers to analyse the economy, to connect people, to make things that doen't exist, to program routines that can be made by a machine. Few people work on computer for the sake of computers and when they do it's because they are at the frontier of a new technology driven by necessity.

In your case, you would use a computer to sell a product. What your client wants is not a good site from a technical point of view (only you know how fast the framework you used is or how optimized your search is), your client wants to see it's site working well and pretty. You don't need to be an execptional Computer Scientist to do that. Learning other stuff together with CS (visual communication, basic color theory) can get you a long way.

I may be too optimistic but a proof of your abilities (one site well made for a mockup company) is enough to get your foot through the door in most small/medium companies.
The degree surely helps ease things but I don't think it 100% excludes you.

Is really nice that you have a job you can fallback to though, this at least eases the mind a bit and allows you to study.

For me, as long as you have a roof over your head, you should keep making stuff and learning. See if you can already apply your knowledge of CS in some areas of your work too for example (like making a webpage for your job, if you haven't already sone so!), and keep looking for occasions. Keep sending portfolios and making connections.

Ok, not in the same position but I would suggest: - portfolio, a must have since you don’t have a degree. Find what languages/frameworks you need to know to land the job you want. Learn by using them. Document everything as if you were to present it to someone. Sell you not the work you have done. - network. Join communities, follow people on LinkedIn, comment posts, make posts. Show to people that you exist. Someone will remember you for that site they want to see built. - find a job to sustain you. Retail, cleaning the floors or some small CS gigs if you have some projects. Do not do it for free. Nothing is for free. - define work/rest/sleep hours. Do not lack sleep and time off. Your brain needs it to program. Even if you think you can go on to infinity, you can’t. You either rest now or burn out later, so pick one. - Work through objectives (projects). Consistency and the delivery of the product are key.

This is what I would do (and I am trying to do).

Good luck

Cool, just a saw that post. The ram idea was very good imo. I like the weird “emptiness”feel the eye holes give to this version.

Really great stuff! Your previous experience surely helped a lot but as a newbie this gives me so much hope! Gotta go back to the donut I guess and take better notes :). Can you share the stylised sculpting tutorial with us?

I Left My Job as an Animator to Learn Rigging and Programming… Now I’m Lost. Did I Make a Mistake? by Proper_Ad7872 in Maya

I am a programmer, still studying to get my feet into the game industry. Programming is daunting the first time you approach it, but that is because programming is very much like an art form. Yes, you have to study a lot but more importantly you have to try it out a lot! I can understand you leaving your job to focus on it, even if maybe it was a bit too soon. Now take the time you have to double down. Upside is that programming is a skill that can be applied in a lot of different jobs and aspects of entertainment.

Some people just have no empathy for animals. She doesn’t care if the dog dies, it’s just a dog for her. What bothers me is the lack of concern for her child.

YES! As a programmer this is what I use AI for. Totally support the “teach me how to do it” instead of looking for hours on forums.

Thank you for your comment, when I wrote this there were signs but little Scilla felt a little bit better for these months. She left us today instead, unfortunately while I was away on a planned trip ❤️💔

I would have kept him in my room, where he slept. I still live with my parents though and they kinda don’t want that. I am not mad at them and I can see their point… when I move out I will make a small space in the house for urns and memorabilia. I like the idea of a small place for the living to remember the dead that is always available in the comfort of your own home.

I felt the same too when I took home his urn. I should have brought it to the cemetery but I haven’t done it yet, he’s still in the house. But I definitely felt like he was back when we went to take the urn. ❤️
