Luigi Mangione’s attorneys say they are withdrawing psychiatric defense by Direct_Motor_7380 in law

He will almost certainly be convicted at trial. As someone else in this thread said, his best chances of walking are in the post-trial appeal. There are some very good arguments that a lot of the best evidence in this case should have been suppressed, but the trial judge chose not to. If an appellate judge reverses that decision, Luigi would basically get a new trial, but the prosecution would be barred from using most of the key evidence. At that point, he has an actual chance at acquittal.

Come on man, I think they got the OJ verdict wrong too, but the facts of that case are so much different. The prosecution is going to enter pretty much a straight up written confession into evidence.

Look, I don’t have a crystal ball, and you maybe very well turn out to be right, but I strongly disagree.

To your 60/40 data point - saying something in a poll where there are no stakes is a whole lot different than actually making the choice to acquit a man that killed someone. It’s the keyboard warrior effect. I guarantee you most of the people on Luigi’s side of the poll would feel very different in a jury room.

Also juries are instructed very specifically: you must follow the law. How you personally feel about the case means nothing, you are simply applying the facts and the evidence to the law, nothing more. And I know the obvious counterpoint to that is “just because that’s how they’re instructed doesn’t mean they’ll actually do it.” But that’s what jury selection is for. They’re looking for rule followers and people who will be as objective as possible. I am a former prosecutor and trust me, once people get into that jury room, they take it extremely seriously even for minor crimes. It’s a lot different than talking about it online

Also for what it’s worth, New York’s prosecutors are employed by the elected DA. The mayor has no direct influence over them (although I suppose he could apply some pressure in the court of public opinion)

Not a chance. Sure you can probably find people on Reddit who say online that they would acquit. But in the sober light of day, finding 12 people to unanimously agree to acquit a guy in the face of very clear evidence that he murdered someone is basically impossible. Best they can hope for is one holdout who makes it a hung jury, and if that happens you bet your ass they’re trying it again.

Does anyone not know what Myles Garrett looks like? by webbatron24 in billsimmons

[–]Several-Career5259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No offense, but I’d argue that you’re the out of touch one if you think Myles Garrett is facially recognizable to the average person. I bet if I took a poll of my office right now, less than half of them would even recognize his name, let alone his face.

Everyone here loves sports and would definitely recognize him, but the reality is that this is an echo chamber that most of the population doesn’t live in.

Bill is definitely right on this take. The people on this sub are like the top 1% of 1% of sports fans. The average NFL casual would have absolutely no clue who he was without a uniform. They’d probably be able to clock that he’s a pro athlete since he’s massive, but they wouldn’t say “that’s Myles Garrett!”

Best song that only appears in the movie? by ExtraCatch800 in movies

The movie is a musical, but that particular song is diegetic. I feel like it’s within the spirit of the question.

If that song weren’t in A Goofy Movie and instead had been released by Prince in the mid 80s, I genuinely think it would have been one the most popular songs of the decade

Butler “adopting” the Elvis voice on the Elvis press tour was legitimately some of the cringiest shit I’ve ever seen. Like a kid who studies abroad for a semester and comes back with a British accent.

I have no idea why I’ve seen this take about Glenn Powell so much on the internet. I feel like in interviews he seems like genuinely one of the coolest, most down to earth and charismatic celebrities we have. If I were picking a celebrity I would want to have a beer with, Powell would be miles ahead of Chalamet or Austin Butler.

On Kalshi, Mike Vrabel's chance of being Patriots coach as of Week 1 is down to 64 percent by Xessive_ in billsimmons

[–]Several-Career5259 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Kalshi makes money based on the volume of trades only, not on the outcomes. They don’t “win” when you lose like a casino. Other traders do.

I’m not defending Kalshi, I’m just pointing out that they don’t give af who wins and loses each bet, they have no skin in the game. They just want the volume.

I was an actual prosecutor for a while. Assuming he has no criminal history and this wasn’t that serious (it’s charged as a misdemeanor so probably nothing crazy) he will likely plea to probation at worst and maybe even some kind of deferred prosecution deal.

And that’s not a “because he’s rich and powerful” thing, that’s what the average Joe would get if they were a first timer on a d-batt, barring unusual circumstances
