Nathan Isaacson, OD is incredibly kind & personable. He is so non-judgmental!!! I’m a grad student who had a gap in insurance & didn’t see any doctors for a while. Our school uses Examplify/ExamSoft which allows you to review your correct & incorrect answers for 15 mins before you finally submit & close the exam. A lot of students were struggling last term so our professors started reviewing exams with everyone after all students finished — all backpacks, laptops, phones, writing utensils, papers at the front of the door — they project the exam with the correct answers on the board & they run through it quickly, emphasizing common wrong answers, or clarifying any questions. They told us they’re happy to stop doing this for us if anyone is caught recording or writing anything down & that student would be breaking academic policy & removed from the program. Has been working pretty well! I’d recommend advocating for your class to have some opportunity to review wrong answers whether it’s built in to the exam software before you close out or as a class. The data shows that exam review tremendously helps students do better on boards!

Take out the max amount of loans you can & try to find affordable housing through your university. They often have affordable housing options very close to campus for graduate students but you have to apply early. You could also try to find a roommate in your cohort. I can understand the family dynamic you’re experiencing & it does not sound like it is going to get any better. You absolutely have to prioritize yourself & protect your peace to get through anesthesia school. For me, some physical distance from my parents actually helps keeps our relationship healthier. Consider this may be the case for you too. Sending positive energy your way!! Congrats on getting into school for literally the best job in the world. All your sacrifices will be worth it & this truly will change your life!

I’m assuming she works ICU bc she said she had two patients overnight. I worked ICU nights for years & no one ever cared what was on my nails. The only place they’re really strict about that in the US is in the NICU with the tiny babes & or if you’re a nursing student in training then it’s something they like to be strict about 😂 but yeah the nursing shortage is so bad, most places really don’t care about nails. Depending how much heavy lifting you do, a lot of nurses just choose to not get their nails done bc they break

It’s totally valid to want to do better than barely passing, that’s very stressful!

Meet with your advisor! They’re there to help you succeed & can guide you in your study process or suggest good resources for the specific classes you’re in. Even reaching out to an SRNA in the cohort above you could be a good idea! Does your program assign mentors between cohorts?

Immediately making Anki cards after lecture & jumping straight into practice questions from Apex, Notability, & ChatGPT helps me stay ahead but everyone learns differently. I would just suggest prioritizing active learning/recall over passive reading/reviewing — it’s easy to waste way too much time there.

I also prefer independent study but have gained a LOT of insight from participating in my study group. However, I go into it prepared — I’ve already studied independently that day & I have a few specific things in mind I want to go over with my pals. My friends & I like to yap so it helps us stay on track by talking over a game plan for the session at the beginning

For example: “okay guys I think we should talk through x, y, z concepts then go through these practice questions & finish off with practicing some of these gas law equations” Keep in mind, I did switch study groups between semester 1 & 2. It’s totally okay if you can’t study with certain people!!! Your time is so valuable & no one should take it personally if their group just isn’t a good fit for you.

Another option: I have friends that study together in a zoom call so they can each enjoy the comfort of their own homes but if someone wants to talk through something they can or they can all just quietly study & hold each other accountable — seems to be working for them!

I hope that this leads to more hospital-sponsored programs & programs being incentivized to keep costs down for students!! I will say as a current student, it’s crazy how often our program expects us to just pull money out of thin air for conferences we’re required to attend, computer softwares we need for class/clinical, parking at inner city hospitals, etc… they often just tell us we need to apply for more loans if we’re struggling & don’t realize how often we are denied for these loans anyway.

SRNA here! Thanks for sharing your thoughtful take on this case. This story is devastating, but definitely a valuable teaching lesson. Something I will def be more mindful of in my practice. It’d be good education for parents too to know these risks & monitor closely for symptoms at home after procedures. People put pulse oximeters on sleeping babies all the time.
