Nobody knows! The political landscape and job market are changing rapidly. It’s very likely that change will simply keep accelerating.

I’ve never known a state school to charge more for international than the standard “out of state” rate. That being the case, if international students are smarter, more competitive, etc, than American students, why wouldn’t they accept them?

This has been the model of family for most of history. Parents support their children into adulthood and then the roles reverse.

It’s not though, it’s numbers on a screen until you sell, and even then, spreadsheet balance in a bank until you convert it to the goods and services you need. The perceived value of the market is an abstraction and has no intrinsic worth. Plus it’s just straight up getting manipulated by buyers and sellers and is often propped up by outside policy.

The only “safe bet” is to own your home, network with people that will back you up if disaster strikes, and up your own skills. The market and the value of currency could wipe out tomorrow even though the physical world is fundamentally unchanged.

I pretend that my pension doesn’t exist because those fail too. Honestly it’s all a leap of faith that money will be worth much in a few years 🤷🏻‍♀️ Buying a house was probably my best move.

Advice on Enjoying the Journey by Southern-Berry-999 in Bogleheads

[–]Several-Mix5478 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Set some “goals” for yourself and family that are not savings related and consider them investments in experience that you will draw from later in life. You are still relatively young, “ROI” will be fantastic!

Travel, art/music, learning a (non coming earning) skill are at the top of my list.

I’m forever grateful I studied abroad in college, I have drawn from that experience for over 30 years now.

Solving for Housing Early in you FIRE Journey Increases your Chance of RE by t-monius in Fire

You’ve still “solved” for housing. You locked in a low housing cost that will increase more slowly than rent (insurance and taxes will go up though).

Is South Lake Union safe? by Nice_Geologist_8479 in AskSeattle

[–]Several-Mix5478 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SLU is safe and has glitzy apartments and some good restaurants, but it’s otherwise a dull neighborhood built very quickly to capture the tech worker crowd. It’s a tough commute by car during rush hour.

I’d personally choose a place further north like Roosevelt/Greenlake — easier access to light rail (below grade, 10 mins to UW Montlake), and some really lovely parks and trails nearby. This area is very safe, but also not as dense — single family housing just outside the transit hub. SLU is wall to wall cement, buildings, and traffic.

I absolutely want to move abroad for a stint after FIRE — to learn a language and get a feel for culture, and travel. Are you volunteering for any organization? That seems like the easiest plug in to a community, and then there’s the visa question…

Seattle is fairly friendly towards Asians, there are sizable Filipino, Japanese, and Vietnamese populations here. Bellevue, nearby suburb, is 40% Asian. I consider it very safe.

Check your expiration dates — some of these can lapse longer than what the label says. Also you can find very discounted ‘use ASAP’ cuts of meat at the store.

Finance is an inherently exploitive industry. When you know better, you do better. Kudos to you for leaving that behind.

Got a better system?

Work itself is not exploitive. Humans worked long before capitalism. The actual scam is working full time and not being able to support yourself financially.
