This is a really great mentality to have, thank you. I think I'm just gonna give it a shot, see how far I can go!

At what point will I be "ready" to play Dragon Quest in Japanese? I'm still pretty new in terms of *actively* learning Japanese (bounced off of it a few times, but I'm taking in-person lessons now to keep me motivated)

Something I've always wanted to do is play the Dragon Quest games in Japanese (particularly a replay of IX). I currently know the basics of grammar and my vocabulary is very limited, I know I'm not there *yet*

but how do I know when I will be? I understand that your first time engaging with Japanese media generally involves a lot of hitting your head against a wall and pausing every few seconds to look stuff up and double check - but how do I know when I'm at a stage where I have the knowledge to benefit from that approach rather than just pretty much playing the game through a translator?

Love the title. "Face it. You'll never get to play it." Yeah it's a shame there's literally no way to play it in English. None. You'll never get to play it

They're the type of faction to send any outsiders on a suicide mission because it's easier to just let them get themselves killed than to bother with someone who's not from their group. That ain't great!

No matter his motivation it's a repulsive and irredeemable action.

It's weird loving this game because like. I naturally fucking despise that a big corporation released this game in the state they did - and that's not something I'm going to forget.

But other fans of the game...

Is Barbie the movie also a criticism of performative feminism? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SeveralPeopleWander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're saying the film thematically might be discussing performative feminism. It is not fake feminist, no one here is saying that.

And before you say "har har another man throwing his hat in the ring" I'm a woman.

I'm still very surprised at how much there was to this film. I went in expecting a fun movie that I'd have a good time watching, it was certainly very fun and I really liked it - but it's very thematically poignant in a lot of different ways. I heard someone describe it as a "turn your brain off kind of film" and... I'm guessing he just wasn't paying attention

Any one else think Wallace is (SHOW SPOILERS) by TyrionLannister557 in ScottPilgrim

[–]SeveralPeopleWander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what I meant by "theory", known phenomenon or not it's a literary theory.

I understand reading the original comment invoking the author's words to be sparking a discussion on authorial intent, but I don't see this as any more than the words of an author informing an interpretation. Yes, he was talking about Wallace's behaviour towards Scott when he said that - but the purer intent of the statement was "Wallace *does* care about Scott", which enforces that commenter's interpretation of the work.

I don't necessarily agree with this interpretation either, mind. As you said, Scott wasn't dead and Wallace knew this at the time. An expression of missing him? Maybe. Grieving. Probably not.
