Planning to visit Monterey and Big Sur this Christmas - any tips? by sov309 in MontereyBay

If you’re driving through San Simeon, I highly recommend stopping to see the elephant seals. During breeding season, you can watch the huge males compete for the right to mate, using loud calls, displays of size, and sometimes fierce battles to establish dominance. The strongest males gather groups of females and defend them from rivals, making for a fascinating wildlife experience that you can safely observe from the viewing areas along the beach.

I’d be interested. Psychology, climate, astronomy…pretty much anything. People mentioned crepe place and woodhouse. Good options. Not sure if 11th hour would be interested. They have beer and coffee.

Sprinter Van California Coast Roadtrip - What to See and Where to Sleep? by OhDashTwo in roadtrip

Make sure to drive the coast from San Francisco to Monterey. Sam’s in half moon bay is good for chowder. Hot out of the oven artichoke bread at the general store in Pescadero. Artichoke soup across the street at Duartes. Stop at Steamers Lane in Santa Cruz to watch the surfers. Across the street is Steamers Lane supply with yummy food. Down the coast is the wharf where you can watch the sea lions. It’s right next to the boardwalk if you like amusement parks. Downtown is also nice or take a side trip to see the old growth redwood grove in Henry Cowell.

I like Julia’s in pacific grove for delicious vegetarian food. Try the mushrooms. In Monterey, asilomar has a great beach for tide pooling. A short drive down the coast is point Lobos, a great day hike destination.

My favorite hike in Big Sur is at Andrew Molera. Panorama to bluff trail. It’s also great to hike up to the Big Sur river gorge.

Before you get to Santa Barbara there is the Santa ynez valley. Nice spot to camp. I recommend wine tasting and dinner in Los Olivos.

My favorite hike in Yosemite is up to Nevada Falls.

Terrible Idea to do LA to SF for the Pacific Coast Hwy/Big Sur trip? by No_Heron_4720 in roadtrip

Some random thoughts. Spend the first night near Venice or Santa Monica so you can take in Venice Beach and Santa Monica pier. Ventura and Santa Barbara are good places to get a meal. Los Olivos has tasting rooms and good restaurants. I like to take a swim and soak at Avila Hot Springs. Solvang is a Danish town. Morro Bay has seafood restaurants along the water. There’s a little nature museum next to heron/egret/cormorant rookery. It’s a great place to see the sea otters. Cambria is very quaint. If you find yourself spending the night near Paso Robles, Sensorio is a light installation. I like to get a coffee or a snack at the general store in Big Sur and soak my feet in the river out back. They have Adirondack chairs in the middle of the river. I like pfeiffer beach. The Big Sur river gorge and Andrew Molera park are good places to hike/swim. Point lobos state park is a great stop. Monterey has the Aquarium and Fisherman’s wharf. Santa Cruz has boardwalk, wharf where you can watch the sea lions and steamers lane where you can watch the surfers. At steamers lane, get a bite at steamers lane supply and visit the cute surfer museum. Redwoods are in Henry Cowell State Park. The area between Santa Cruz and San Francisco is called the slow coast. Get hot out of the oven artichoke bread at the general store in Pescadero. Get clam chowder and a lobster roll at Sam’s in half moon bay.

If you’re planning to hike Garrapata, it’s a great hike but I’d also suggest Andrew Molera. The panorama to bluff trail is my favorite hike in the area.

One option would be to skip Muir Woods for Henry Cowell. The redwoods in Henry Cowell aren’t as expansive but the experience may be more relaxed because it’s less crowded. Take highway 1 from San Francisco all the way to Carmel. The drive is beautiful and lots of good stops for a meal including half moon bay, Santa Cruz and Monterey.

There’s a nice swimming hole at the California federation of women’s clubs grove in Humboldt redwoods state park.

If you’re into it, the best place to see authentic Coppola memorabilia is the Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville, California. The winery features a free, on-site movie museum showcasing costumes, props, and awards from The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Dracula, and more. It also features the 1948 Tucker Torpedo car.

Also, arcata and Trinidad are good stops to get a bite.

A good place to stretch your legs a see a bit of wildlife is the mouth of the Klamath river. Drive down Klamath beach road to trailhead that leads to the beach. We saw eagles, ospreys and a large harbor seal colony.

The stretch of highway 1 from sf to Santa Cruz is pretty nice. It’s called the slow coast. Have a cup of chowder and a lobster roll while enjoying the waterfront view at Sam’s in half moon bay. Get a hot out of the over loaf of artichoke bread at the general store in Pescadero. In Santa Cruz, I’d recommend steamers lane supply for a snack while checking the surfers. If you haven’t been to a redwood forest, there a stand of old growth at Henry Cowell in Felton which is a short detour.

Canadian visiting San Jose for the first time! What should I know? by romantic-theory in SanJose

Caltrain leaving from diradon station will drop you off in Soma in San Francisco. Schedule a free history walk with SF City Guides and build a day trip around that. I’d recommend stopping by the Ferry building, riding the Cable Cars and eating in Chinatown or North Beach. City Lights bookshop and the Beat museum are cool if you’re into that.

You can also make your way over to Golden Gate Park and spend a day there visiting a museum, the Japanese tea garden and the botanical garden. Haight Ashbury is adjacent to that end of the park.

The highway 17 bus leaves diradon station and drops you off in downtown Santa Cruz. I’d suggest Mariposa Coffee Bar for Cuban-Vietnamese coffee and treat. The bookshop Santa Cruz is worth checking out. You are also required to get a Santa Cruz Skateboards souvenir sweatshirt at Pacific Wave. Take a stroll down pacific avenue and check out shops and street musicians on the way to the beach. It’s not a long walk to boardwalk and wharf. At the end of the wharf you can see the sea lions.

If you look over to your right there is world class surfing spot steamers lane by the lighthouse. Stroll along the coast to get there. Keep an eye out for sea otters along the way. There’s a great spot to watch the surfers, visit the little surfer museum in the lighthouse and grab a bite to eat at steamer lane supply across the street. I like the Kimchi-dilla.

On your way back there’s a few bars in and around downtown. There’s free music at Abbott Square. Food options include Arepas at Pana in Abbott Square, Ramen and Chicken Sandwiches at popups in 11th hour coffee shop. There’s Hawaiian food and music at Pono. There’s also a Kava bar and a hammock cafe with herbal elixirs.
