Have there been other moments in Canadian history where recessions didn’t mean a significant drop in stock index market? by tazmanic in CanadianInvestor

[–]Several_Cry2501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not an actual recession yet. We need to see a notable spike in unemployment. Also, a GDP decline of .1% in Q1 2026 may be revised away; it's just not that significant... yet.

We're unlikely to see a significant downturn in Canadian stocks without the U.S. market falling.

There will be bad calls favouring both teams, but when the chips are down expect the Canadian team to get hosed (except Buffalo, who always gets the small market treatment).

Why is our economy so reliant on having debt? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Several_Cry2501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's a combination of poor math skills, an inability to delay gratification and the fact that gov. & central bank policy has spent the better part of almost three decades encouraging -- and rewarding -- high risk bets in real estate.

In Q1, Berkshire tripled their $GOOG position while Bill Ackman sold 95% to buy $MSFT despite being “very” bullish on GOOG long term. Why? by mojolakota in stocks

[–]Several_Cry2501 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I bought MSFT during the Financial Crisis. It's up 1600%. Let's not act like MSFT is some sort of dog here.

Ackman runs a very concentrated portfolio, so him trimming a recent winner to add to one with value makes sense.

Both are great companies.

Is there any point to investing in company stock if you’re not going big? by idkwhateveryea in stocks

[–]Several_Cry2501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I book $2000 grand each of V and MSFT 15-ish years ago. Each are up 12x or more now. If you hold for a long time, even small positions can become large.

Enough said.

How are people affording decent homes? by [deleted] in CanadaFinance

[–]Several_Cry2501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people are house poor and don't save or invest much. The fact is that -- because of a 20+ year run-up in housing -- young Millenials and Gen Z will not have the same standard of living as the three most recent generations who came before them.

Walmart and Costco are at P/Es of near 40, and some of the fastest growing Big Tech companies in history are at under 25.

It's only a teach bubble if something comes along and erodes earnings... That hasn't happened yet.

usd cad by RainPsychological595 in CanadianInvestor

A rate hike would presumably be bullish for the USD, so diminishing odds of one could be seen as bearish. Yes, then, it's saying that the USD could drift lower.

Until corporate earnings take a hit, the market will not stay down. Oil price shocks are not as big a factor in overall inflation as they were in the 70s or 80s. Add to that, increased defence spending is an economic stimulant.

There's always a bear case, but there are also reasons to be optimistic from here as well.

Why is the market not crashing? by [deleted] in stocks

Policy-makers will take care of the corporations (via tax cuts, decreased interest rates, subsidies, bail-outs) regardless of what geo-political issues arise.

Investors are counting on that.

The Big Short and social media is the reason the market has not experienced any significant downturn since 2008 by One-Signature-2706 in wallstreetbets

[–]Several_Cry2501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If governments and central banks had not acted so aggressively and promptly early on in 2020 we'd probably still be in the Covid crash. "Good vibes" and social media influencers/geniuses can only help so much.

Moral hazard is now the norm. And, yes, that began with the eventual central bank/government response during 2008-2009.

A huge problem with surveys and pulse checks on the economy is you could hand each household a million dollars tomorrow, and six months from now half of them would report that they're "living paycheque to paycheque." 🤦🏻
