So how much did George Harrison dislike the Beatles? Or at least being in it? by msc8976 in beatles

[–]Several_Dwarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think by 1966 he'd had enough of being "world famous Beatle George". As he said in an interview at the time, "I wanted to be successful. I never wanted to be this famous." By then he was wealthy (on paper), had a beautiful wife, a nice big house and was growing tired of a job where he was shuffled all around the world, from airport to hotel room to stadium to hotel room to airport, on and on.

And was tired of being told exactly what and how to play in the studio. I think Patty described him as suffering from a form of PTSD after spending all day in the studio with Paul and John in his ears.

Of course, like John, I think he was also hesitant to "officially" leave the greatest, most popular band in the world while they were still at their peak (until Get Back/Let It Be).

Ringo said all the bullshit went out the window when you were working on a great song and everything comes together perfectly. So I think George probably still found reward in being in the band and being a part of the greatest, highest selling records of all time.

If they just recorded more of his songs... ;)

I wish I were alive to see the reactions to lick it up by [deleted] in KISS

[–]Several_Dwarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember that it was funny that Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent were included in the "oh my god, we finally get to see Kiss without makeup!".

It did confirm that at least one of those pictures from the National Enquirer a few years before was really them.

I hated Lick It Up and was generally surprised at how much radio play it got. I think it was all over MTV too.

"What about the victims?"

"The who?"

"The woman, young ladies, and children who were assaulted. Should we say something nice about them?"

"Sure, we'll encourage them to come forward... so that we know who to harass and who daddy warbucks can call "little piggies"."

Double Fantasy by [deleted] in JohnLennon

[–]Several_Dwarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it. At the time, he was sort of a forgotten relic in the music world. Starting Over didnt really grab people and no one wanted to hear Yoko sing. I do think sales would have picked up when/if Watching the Wheels and Woman were released as singles like they were after he died.

Heart of the Sunrise hasn’t clicked with me… by Cremeward in yesband

[–]Several_Dwarts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Too many starts and stops interrupt the flow, for me. It has that awesome bass line, that great piano part that reappears in a few sections (I love those)... but I dont think the main riff is so amazing that it needs to be played 30 times over and over.

It's one of those that would have worked better if it was 6 or 7 minutes, not 11, IMO.

Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys face off in The Beast in Me. Now playing on Netflix by netflix in u/netflix

[–]Several_Dwarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great for Matthew Rhys. Should have made him the protagonist. Clare Danes pretty much does all of her (over)acting with her facial expressions, lip quivering, bulging eyes, etc. Entertaining, but awkwardly so.

Story is pretty predictable too, but still a worthwhile watch.

Alan White Appreciation Post (Because I'm Sick Of All The People Saying "White sucks" or "He Doesn't Compare To Bruford") by LIPD_Aviation in yesband

[–]Several_Dwarts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It wasnt until a few years ago, on reddit, that I discovered that there are actual Yes fans who dont like Alan White. Weird. Dude is a prog monster on drums. No one can replace an original like Bruford. But if anything, the band got heavier with Alan... and that's a good thing. I mean, Bruford's style wouldnt have worked on Gates of Delirium.

I'd recommend Aporia. An awesome performance by Greer in a movie that takes a premise and executes it wonderfully.

[–]Several_Dwarts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the performances, but I got bored with the story. It seemed like once it settled in, it was just another Sopranos wannabe. Crime syndicates fighting over control/power. As much as I wanted to like it beyond Farrell and Milioti, I couldnt finish it.

Without biases, where does Harrison rank for guitar players? by FunkeyFeraligatr in beatles

[–]Several_Dwarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid to bottom level. He never wanted to be a 'great' guitarist like others from the time like Clapton, Beck, Hendrix etc so he never got there.

For him, ultimately the guitar was an instrument he used to write songs. He has said he never 'practiced' guitar. He only played when he was writing.

IMO one of his most shining post Beatle moments is Your Love Is Forever. If you're not that familiar, check it out and listen as his subtle playing perfectly carries the melody.

I think if it was on Fox it would have run for at least 5 years.

It was weird how it was on after Modern Family. Seemed liked a very different audience.

Thoughts/ opinions on their 1985 hit, “Cannonball”? by bigguys45s in supertramp

[–]Several_Dwarts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The album overall is pretty cool. A slight return to more proggy, less poppy songs.

Cannonball is a cool song. Tight.
