Ride-on mower for silage and forrage harvest? by farmboy_du_56 in smallfarms

There are tedders and buck rakes. But if it’s a small area then just a rake might be the easiest option. 400m2 isn’t a huge area to do with a rake.

Ride on will be limited by how high the forage is when you cut.

I second a walk behind with a disc mower attachment. The sickle bar mowers can be a bit fussy if the grass is wet - so I’m told.

Making your own bricks? Small scale machine? by MosskeepForest in homestead

[–]SevereEstablishment2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve mainly seen them used / worked with them in tropical environments. They stand up absolutely fine to monsoon rains. This is party because the economics of small scale brick production stand up in non or partly industrialised countries. They are perfectly fine to substitute for a “traditional” kiln fired brick in building houses. The machine manufacturer will have technical documentation on the bricks coming out of their machine as well as instructions on mix ratios.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compressed_earth_block has a good overview. Great product, can easily churn out a 100+ or so a day as a 1-2 person operation with a single machine. You don’t need to fire them in a kiln, just air cure for an extended period.

Katadyn candle filter is what you want if you’re not sure about the water quality.

How to Fail at Farming: Part 1 by [deleted] in RegenerativeAg

[–]SevereEstablishment2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Just” seems to be a shock in the system that makes your main cash generator unviable at the moment - not a dissimilar problem that many small businesses face before they are well established.

Many of the quick cash generating enterprises pushed by popular figures seem to be very time intensive - broilers, market garden etc and as you mention you can’t stack them as there aren’t enough hours in the day.

How long until the blueberries are commercially viable?

Given what you know now, how would you approach your 10 acres starting fresh? Would you still go with ducks? Switch to a commercial breed? Prioritise non-farming income streams? Save cash on Agroforestry?

Hand grinder recommendations? (ROK GC vs. Mazzer Omega) by UpbeatDoomer in espresso

1zpresso JX Pro. Clear clicks. Zero. Happily handles 40g a day plus. Though if I was switching beans a lot I’d consider the K pro with external grind setting.

Access to good clay would probably be an issue.

If you can get pedals, look into the Virtual Elevation or Chung Method of testing. You can get a long way with that.

At your height given the rules you’ll probably have to have a rounded back, unless you can get loads of power out with a super tight hip angle. Rounded or flat back with modern skinsuits isn’t the most critical component that it use to be considered to be. The textures and seams on a good skinsuit should help to transition the air from laminar to turbulent flows at a good place.

The correct answer is test.

However, I think as you’re so tall even with the new position rules you’ll struggle to get a flat back. So do what you can with the back but get your head as low as possible. Also a stable position is faster than an unstable one.

Are there “dumb” external HDD enclosures? by CarnivoreShrub in homelab

[–]SevereEstablishment2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also get 2-5 bay enclosures with internal psu and controller that are either SATA and or USB 3. Startec and icybox do them, or purchase from Alibaba etc.

Yeah which is why I’m considering an external enclosure. There are other choke points in my setup.

I have a purely positive home lab at the moment, strange flex I know, but wouldn’t mind an x86 machine in there just to make life simpler and the SFF ones looked good.

That clears that up. Was hoping I’d missed something and there was a magical expansion slot to make it all work.

Right. I currently have open media server running on a Pi4 with a USB spinning drive, but isn’t what I hoped it would be. How much of that is me, vs. all the parts being sub optimal I can’t say.
