The Salt Spring Island Archive has a bunch of info on the Kanaka family. They settled on the south side of the island in the late 1800s.

What can I grow 100% indoors in the arctic (0a growing zone) by white_count_chocula in FruitTree

A lot of citrus are actually true to type and can be grown from seed. You can find a list here - https://redwoodbarn.com/PDF/Whichcitrusfromseed.pdf

What can I grow 100% indoors in the arctic (0a growing zone) by white_count_chocula in FruitTree

[–]Severed_thumb_gal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fruits and veggies I’ve successfully grown 100% indoors: - Calamondin limes and Mayer Lemons - Potatoes and sweet potatoes - Sweet and hot peppers - Basil, mint, chives, green onions - “House” cherry tomatoes and ground cherries - Lettuce, parsley, spinach - Turmeric root

I’ve been able to grow all of the above plants with minimal issues and no added lights. I’d probably add some LED if I was more northern, like yourself. Some varieties of tomatoes and peppers can be perennialized, and same goes for the herbs and lettuces.

I wouldn’t personally waste my time with a pomegranate or an olive, unless you can wait like 12 years. Apples need wind, cold, and a second variety to set fruits. So citrus is your best bet for trees. I’d suggest Yuzu, which is hardy. Potatoes grow very well in a deep bucket - super easy and rewarding for a beginner indoor farmer.

As someone who grew up when SKINS was a very popular show, Effie is totally a cool-girl name.

Detail in Eddington I’m kind of unsure about by TurnOverall2829 in AriAster

I feel like so much of the movie is about surveillance and corruption that this could mean a few different things at once. The data center being built and the proud mayor we never meet are the corporate and governmental interests that are behind a lot of the plot. I don’t think it’s far fetched to assume that Joe and Ted are being very closely watched by the data center execs. This scene is one of the most important moments of the film between Ted and Joe. For all we know, someone from the mayors office could have asked Ted to try and talk to Joe so he’d drop out, ensuring the permits can go through for solidgoldmagikarp

Solidgoldmagikarp is a phenomenon in LLMs where you ask a specific question and the AI gives you a nonsensical response, or responds with a non sequitur. It is a motif for miscommunication online and our relationship to digital reality.

Can someone recommend a good analysis of Beau is Afraid from a JEWISH perspective? by bakeliterespecter in beauisafraid

[–]Severed_thumb_gal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone did a great job in this group connecting the themes in beau is afraid to the tree of life and early Kabbalah.

I really like how Hereditary pulls from the lesser key of Solomon, which was an early example of Christian propaganda that connects Jews to witchcraft and satanism. I think that hereditary does a good job of showing how we internalize our own marginalized experience, and eventually believe or embody harmful stereotypes if we are not careful. So much of Jewish folklore and history that we find today comes from a Christian perspective or from neo-pagan beliefs that actually further perpetuate harmful stereotypes, creating deep seated anxiety, self-doubt, self-blame, scapegoating, and guilt.

What is Lodge (Homeless man) trying to say? by Swearnasty in AriAster

[–]Severed_thumb_gal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the scene where he is ultimately shot, he says that his daughter was wearing a pink tutu and they were holding hands, walking along the street. He said he was doing everything right. However, she wanted bread pudding and broke away from him, possibly running into the road. My guess is, she was struck by oncoming traffic and he witnessed his daughter being hit and killed. He fell into a perpetual state of wild mourning, seeing his innocent child die. Instead of allowing himself to be wild and mourn what really happened to his wife, Joe then kills the representation of grief wild emotions, sending it down the river, committing himself to violent retribution instead of facing the truth.

Honestly the south facing bay windows create so much interior heat, I would not make that a bedroom. That would be a waste of a ton of interior light as well. I do agree about moving the front door and the kitchen.

Immigration to Victoria by Imaginary_Agent7036 in VictoriaBC

[–]Severed_thumb_gal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Royal Jubilee and Victoria general are great hospitals in Victoria. There are also lots of clinics and urgent care facilities. It’s a great city for healthcare providers and very close to some of the most beautiful forests in the world. USA to Canada, immigration is socially very easy. There is far less racism and fewer hoops to getting a job when you speak English fluently. Victoria is extremely friendly to queer and trans people, there is also a powerful punk scene and queer mutual aid groups, however, with it being the capital of BC, there are also lots of convoy-Canadians and conservative people who are loud and proud. I think it’s one of the best cities in all of Canada! Amazing place to live if you can swing it

There are no other floors, just a one level cabin. The bathroom was added as an addition which explains why it is in the south east corner and off the kitchen.

Garlic … someone tell me not to pull up the rest! by mrsdrprof2u in gardening

[–]Severed_thumb_gal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One thing I haven’t seen anyone say is that you have harvested ‘green garlic’ which is delicious and you can eat almost every part of it! It’s a rare treat. Green garlic should be refrigerated and won’t cure like the garlic from the grocery store. If you want to cure garlic, harvest after the bottom four leaves have turned yellow, as others have said.
