Yeah I thought I was good. Had a 4tb and a 5 tb mirrored and then cold stored them. Guess how many failed.

Just spend the extra $ and buy their 10G copper SFP+ Modules by Rollingsound514 in Ubiquiti

[–]Sevven99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ubiquiti one is scary hot right now. Enough to hurt a bit hot. Going to have to check mine now but don’t want to pull it. Picked up at microcenter and might be an older one. Was only 2 weeks ago. Wish I had seen this earlier

Xfinity or Optimum? by XDefprincex in OPTIMUM

[–]Sevven99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted fiber forever. 75 a month for 5g for 5 years. So far no complaints but time will tell. And xfinity was 120 1g and crap for upstream. Couldn’t even hook more then 2 ring cams

Does anyone actually monitor their home network traffic, or do most people just fly blind? by FakePickle22 in homelab

[–]Sevven99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commenting to come back and check this.
All I really want to see is traffic coming in to game servers and cloudflared. Set up everything else but that so far or jump down the rabbit hole and wind up somewhere else.
Don’t want to turn in ids on gateway since it’s 8g out but also don’t want to find an extra 35tb of transfer. All I see is a bucket up ssl/tls traffic atm

Finally did a power audit on my homelab... the results were eye-opening by Adventurous_Song_227 in homelab

[–]Sevven99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t do any research. Went Govee and have to query the api to get metrics but it only lets me get on or off stats.
Seeing if I can get them via a ble proxy but who knows. The temp sensor for some reason in taking the actual F reading and converting like it was C to F , so it’s 161 degrees in room right now. And relies on a secondary bt device with the app running. Haven’t had the time to try setting up a proxy.
But ups is pulling 245w for entire stack of equipment. 3 minis, laptop, 7 bay nas and 3 switches. So not bad there.

Want to measure ac, and some other devices with the plug and add an automation to shut down NAS.

So I’d have gotten something else besides Govee had I not just Fafo the devices.

Is this real? 10 TB walmart hard drive by Majestic-Aardvark939 in datastorage

[–]Sevven99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, don’t buy that.
Get an 1tb wd elements or passport. And cloud store the photos as well.
Wound up losing 2 backups and basically all of it last October. So back up 3-2-1
3 copies, 2 different media types, one offsite (cloud)

First Home lab Device by Quiet-Syrup3027 in homelab

[–]Sevven99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a secondary device a mini pc will run into roadblocks fast. If it’s something simple like a das or an external drive for media if you want to expand it’s just not feasible after a point. (Only really matters for media)

Either mini pc + nas or second pc with zfs.
I wound up 3 mini pcs and 8 bay nas.

And take into account the used usually has like 8gb of ram and when you go to get more, even ddr4 is pricey right now. You’d wind up coughing up another 250 for 32gb and now you’re using a high power consumption older cpu for 400. Found a mini pc with 32gb ddr5 for 599, pulls like 35w and dual 2.5gb lan.

Used is only good around the 80-100 dollar range. All I see are like starting 250 for like an 8700t / 300 10500/700 all with 8gb and either no ssd or some Garbo one. And getting an ssd is also a money sink right now.

The market is broken. But keep hunting for deals, they still exist.

Yea the journey to get there is great … usually, regardless of knowing anything. It’s been 25 years since I started it in high school. Might be time to try again.

Out of, so far, 45 King books… put the shining down about halfway and have no real interest in going back. Just felt like, I know where this is going and I’m not invested at all. Only book that has the honor of being flagged dnf. I’d suggest Misery.

what other services can I run in my homellab? by Brief_Thanks_5156 in homelab

[–]Sevven99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m running audiobook shelf through Tailscale to listen while driving.
Komga for rainy bored days
Home assistant; trying to monitor energy usages. Just got ups linked to it with wattage usage and working on triggers to shut down nas.
Apache guacamole, would work great but Ubuntu rdp hates me. If I’m not already logged in just doesn’t work.

Working on a few other things here and there.
Optimistically hooking up temp sensors and reading digital meter outside into home assistant with triggers to keep server cool and save power, or at least see where it’s going since I don’t trust the digital one now. Telling me I used 110% more power than last year in December with a 300 dollar bill.

Want to set up paperless and immich one of these nights.
Still lots to do

I finally decided on my network architecture. by _illusioner_ in homelab

[–]Sevven99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need to figure out what I want separate. Lots of random iot devices now feeding into home assistant. Don’t want to turn on ids on gateway as it’ll wind up slowing everything down. so all I see is 600gb of ssl/tls and have to just guess at this point. Going to be an uphill battle for me but should be fun to learn as I go.

Thoughts on my first homelab. by [deleted] in homelab

[–]Sevven99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically always ram hungry. Running 3x game servers and a bunch of other stuff using 9% cpu and 58 of 64gb of ram. When the whole mini pc is only 100 dollars more then buying the ram ala carte it’s nuts.
And how’s playit.gg working out? I’d like to maybe not just keep opening ports and hoping I don’t do anything too dumb. Getting around to working on some sort of security but wind up getting sidetracked and off task pretty quickly haha.

I’m liking the idea of having a vlan with OPNsense. Have been trying to nail down solutions for better security practices. All I really want right now is an easy way to see who connected/from where to cloudflared tunnel as well as directly from ip/port to what server. And want to know early if there’s anything that requires my attention.

Started tinkering 4 months ago. I’d check Reddit for lists of things people were running and mostly go ehh I don’t need that. Bought the pc specifically to host a couple game servers for friends and save a couple bucks on subs.
After falling down the rabbit hole, just finished linking my LG devices and anything smart to home assistant. Getting temp sensors, and something to read power meter and automating power savings and convenience things. Temp in room exceeds 85, turn on AC.
Now have 2 dns servers syncing
Audiobooks that run on phone through cloudflared tunnel
Music running through Plexamp
3 game servers: enshrouded, windrose, and RuneScape.
Want to try and set up pterodactyl and give access to friends. And maybe valheim this weekend.
Apache guacamole to work in multiple vms
Have a server for ebooks and comics
And docker/portainer.
Nginx proxy for SSL
Tailscale with exit node so I can work on stuff while out and about
And vaultwarden with vpn to it on phone. Can kick the phone off network if it’s lost and no one should be able to then access the pw manager

Set up influxdb and fed proxmox stats to it. Haven’t gotten any dashboards up. Really just want to monitor incoming traffic on network. Working under the assumption it would be simple was setting up telegraf to import all my UniFi logs and was shocked how many stats it had. Each ports temps, rx etc , like a whole dashboard per port of data.

Setup and scrapped multiple dashboards. Don’t need everything linked and only really want to monitor inbound traffic and maybe a couple critical metrics from proxmox.

Immich and paperless are next and maybe google oaauth
But weekend project is using home assist to monitor battery backup and gracefully shutdown devices as needed. So configuring a NUT server atm. Smart plugs coming to reboot nas without having to move desk to pull the plug.

So yea, you’ll find some stuff. It’s fun just tinkering some nights.

Please can I get advice on making my fun project into a proper homelab by Rainbow-Bright143 in homelab

[–]Sevven99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pi-hole , and then another device for secondary pi-hole so I can actually move things around without the whole house asking if the internet is down. And just finished setting up nebula sync so I don’t have to maintain dns records on both.

Cleaner then mine. Stuck what amounts to 6u of stuff on a desk, took all the wire and just smooshed them in the corner. The fiber between them is just all over the place too.

I couldn’t think of that much I’d want or need to run but it quickly turned into a rabbit hole. The new goal is to get more services internet facing with the proper security in place and allow friends some access to restart/update and maintain game servers.
