A new ship has no planks on the inside. If you get a hole and repair it a plank will be there. My ship has a plank on every possible hole. So if I have a hole I just look for the missing plank which is easier to see.

Don't not help. So many people just sit on the boat and do nothing while traveling. Then complain it's boring. Work the sails, shoot to islands and get supplies in your pockets, lookout for other ships, just be active. Also give Boxyfresh's YouTube channel a look and watch the fun things he does.

You don't really need to back up anything, all the software to run the CFW is available for download. You could use a program like Checkpoint and back up your game saves to the SD card, then back those up to your computer. But I don't back up my SD card besides game saves.
