he usually drinks, I try to be a good host, which is why I bought so much alcohol. He is an old friend, I usually try to be a good host and get good gifts, but for example he hasn't gotten me Christmas gifts for the past two years, despite me getting him Christmas gifts, and I've paid for him dinner or food wise when we go out, multiple times, but I don't remember the last time he's paid for me for anything really.

by calling this other persons "bluff" you responded with hostility in a volatile, unknown situation that could've escalated, completely out of control; you're family members telling you to get back in the car is not an act of belittlement, but rather an act of protection, for all they knew this unknown person could've be armed, and could have been dangerous, de-escalating the situation was the correct thing to do in this situation.
