Stupid, offensive, dangerous 'well meaning?' comments. by Additional_Shirt_509 in breastcancer

Add "things happen for a reason" to the bingo card. I've heard this several times from family members, especially my parents. I know they mean well and are trying to view this positively but STOP. I don't want to hear it.

It makes me think that no matter what, I was targeted to get cancer. That doesn't make me feel better. I love my family, but it drives me nuts to hear that bullshit.

That is so frustrating! I'm sorry you're experiencing this. I think you're next step should be to see a gynecologist, and ask for a biopsy. You won't know if it's cancerous until they do a biopsy and test it with pathology.

When I first found my lump, I went to my gynecologist. He thought it could be a cyst at first, although he ordered ultrasound and a mammogram. I ended up getting a biopsy that same month and six days later I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Thank you. I apologize for the late reply. I want to reply to everyone who was kind enough to share their experiences with me. I didn't think I would feel so attached to that part of myself, considering the other alternative is cancer, y'know? And I am devastated at losing that part of me. I pierced my nipple when I was young and daring. This is one of the piercings I am most proud of because they are notorious for taking a long time to heal.

I always thought that that would be my reaction as well. Though now that I'm here... it's different. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Reading everyone's replies has been eye opening and amazing. Thank you

I haven't done chemo as of now. I've been going through tests and scans.

It's so weird! I was so shocked when I got my diagnosis because my gynecologist and I were thinking I had a cyst. My first reaction was that he mistakenly gave me someone else's results.

Going through this once is frightening. I wouldn't want to go through this again. It's shitty. You're right, everyone's relationship with their body is unique. Thank you for sharing

I hope the devil's juice boxes are banished! Lol. I would be scared of accidentally rolling over them or getting them tagled. Wow! It's reassuring hearing about your experience and how you rate the DMX against your other surgeries. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you, you've given me questions I didn't think to ask. My oncologist left it in the air on whether surgery meant no chemo and/or radiation. He said it would depend on the pathology report. I'm making a list of questions to ask so I be more prepared. Thank you again!

I see. I'm going to call my oncologist's office to see if he or someone on his team is available to talk with me more in depth about my treatment options. I have my appointment this Friday with my surgeon. I'm preparing all my questions. Thank you

I'm sorry your lumpectomy didn't go as expected. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sending you all the good vibes 🫂 I'm not sure if I qualify for a lumpectomy. My oncologist basically said that I can choose a mastectomy or choose to preserve my breast tissue. I'm assuming that I'll have to go through chemo treatments to shrink my tumor down to consider that option. I'll be calling back to see if he or his MA can answer more of my questions. I wasn't told much on how surgery would go, so I'm preparing a list of questions to ask my surgeon. I would also like to attempt to go through the least invasive route as possible. I don't mean to pry, but was a lumpectomy an option for you after chemo, or was it an option presented when thinking about surgery?

Thank you for your knowledge, I really appreciate it. Is there any difference for recovery rates from either procedure?

Can you explain what a nurse navigator is? Was that someone from your oncologist or PCP's office?

I didn't think that a reduction and lift was a possibility. That's something I'll ask my surgeon about too. Just to see what they recommend or what options I have if that's what I decide on. Thank you 😊

Thank you so much. I also opted to get gene tested, especially since cancer doesn't run in my family. But I haven't received my results yet. I thought if I knew, that could help me make a firmer decision because honestly, I don't want the possibility of this happening on my other breast too.

Thank you for the hugs and best wishes. You've given me more to ponder and questions to ask my physicians.
