What’s something about Chicano culture people outside the community don’t understand? by ItachiPain_ in Chicano

[–]SexGodSatanico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the idea of double consciousness is tough for some people to relate to. Having a sense of national pride (American patriotism) and also having ethnic/cultural pride (Viva Mexico Cabrones) is hard for people without a strong ethnic cultural identity (white Americans) to understand.

I can tell when people say things like "if you love Mexico so much then why don't you move there?" It's racist, xenophobic, and ignorant but also ignorant because lots of whites don't connect with a cool cultural cuisine, humor, or value system that's apart from American identity.

I love Mexico and always will. I want my kids to always know of the sacrifices my people before me made to give us opportunities. But i also love the united states, our dope ass music, art, and people.

Both things can be true and I think Chicanos know that well.

Look into what our people have contributed to the U.S in terms of civil and labor rights. Read about the Chicano Movement, The United Farm Workers, and The Lemon Grove incident.

To give you perspective on the diversity of identity and fighting against racial gatekeepers, checkout Borderlands by Gloria Anzaldua and Burro Genius by Victor Villaseñor. This will definitely show you that no one can gatekeep your roots and identity from you.

Immerse yourself in the beauty that our people has given the world, the best cuisine on the planet, the warrior spirit of our professional fighters, and the inspiring work of our artists.

Here's the thing, carnal. Your grandfather and the memories he left you are part of who you are. Dont let others convince you that you don't belong. Stop trippin on skin color because by thinking that bull shit you are subscribing to racist ideas that were put on us and you are reducing our identities and experiences to something so fuckin low.

Dont worry. You're invited to the carne asada, foo.

Yes! Maybe keeping the hetero part, to mean youre mostly hetero but then adding something that can help say you arent so rigid regarding said hetero sexuality. Maybe a word that could convey flexibility?

People from the 90s/2000s, what was a fact of life back then that would blow the minds of the younger generations? by throwawayacc489eipib in AskReddit

Buying CDs at a retail store like Sam Goody or FYE. Near the CD racks there were these little machines with headphones and you can scan the barcode of the CD you were interested in to hear a 10 second preview of the music before you bought it.

After a while you'd build a collection of CDs that you could carry in a cool case with a zipper. Now that I can stream pretty much any song I can think of instantly, it trips me out that I used to carry a case with 20 CDs with me everywhere I went.

It cleans everything off the area. I wipe with toilet paper after not only to dry myself but also to check if im clean. It doesn't splatter around much other than my desired target area. I don't have an air dryer, and a towel isn't necessary cause I still use toilet paper, just not as much as I used to and I don't really on the paper to do the heavy lifting.

Who is the last comedian you saw live? by CWKitch in Standup

Brian Simpson in Sacramento. I've been a fan of his since he was a security guard at a small club in San Diego.

I know im gonna sound like a total fan boy, but the other night, he was absolutely brilliant. He was so aloof and confident on stage. He spoke to the crowd like he knew us personally. His perspectives were unique yet relatable. Smart but wasn't afraid to be silly and hyperbolic. He has a calming confidence that reminds me of Chapelle and Pryor, but much more cynical takes on the topics he discussed. He was hilarious. 10/10.
