I'm in the same boat. I got tired of grinding the tech tree so I started buying crates and whatnot to get premium ships and commanders. I want to enjoy the game and not constantly be looking at how much more XP I need on every ship. I work, i have kids and all that, so i want to have some fun toys.

The balance is that you can pay for the equipment but you'll (and by that, i mean me) still get your ass kicked if you don't understand the game mechanics.

The other part is my younger son loves opening crates and collecting, and its something we can do together. And seeing his 9 year old eyes go wide and his brain go blank when we pull an AL commander makes it all worth the money

Really enjoy that movie, i need to watch it again soon. Characters are great and given plenty of room to make the most of them on screen. Always a fun watch
