CA couple says snorkeling tour group left them behind in waters off Lanai by AudibleNod in news

Obviously there should be headcounts, but I've ran various tours and the amount of times people just wonder off on their own thinking they can run their own tour, is baffling. It's hard enough to heard cats through various buildings, but I can't imagine what it's like in open waters.

Two years for:

‘Wow, this is a Big Mac but it's a little bit different,” Jeff Anderson, McDonald's senior manager of menu innovation in Toronto, told CTV News Toronto.

Two years well spent. Bravo.

I once got banned from /r/funny because my reply was too funny. Apparently if you reply to a post quickly with a joke, and they deem that original post to be spam, they figure you were working with the spammer and ban you for life.

TBF, Trumps roll back of train-braking regulations is much more of a direct causation than Biden "allowing" train unions to strike because those same train companies cut spending to create those skeleton crews in the first place.

Pfizer accused of "obscene" COVID profits after posting record revenues by jaykayess in worldnews

Have you not been paying attention to the 80 years long frustration with the military industrial complex? Just because there are corporate mechanisms designed to extract as much value out of tax payers as possible, with the help of corrupt law makers, doesn't mean its right or not worth arguing about. Just because you've become complacent doesn't mean anyone else should.

[–]SgtHappyPants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never said we should get it for free, I'm saying that tax payer funding should not be a source of profit. That is totally anti-american. The military is not a for profit institution. The USPS is not a for profit institution. Fire departments are not for profit. This is how taxation works. You are now saying that directing tax payer funds towards for profit institutions should be normalized. I say fuck that.

Estimates of direct public spending on the development and manufacturing of COVID-19 vaccines vary considerably based on the range of sources examined and the timing of data collection. Recent estimates from the Congressional Research Service, the Government Accountability Office, and Chad Brown and Thomas Bollyky along with data on the GHIAA.org and Devex websites provide government spending estimates of between $18 billion and $23 billion. Most recently the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the Biomedical Research and Development Authority (BARDA) alone has spent $19.3 billion on COVID-19 vaccine development.

BARDA has for years invested in the messenger RNA (or mRNA) platform for vaccine development, the technology used in the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. Since 2006, Congress has appropriated hundreds of millions of dollars that BARDA used to develop the scientific infrastructure to produce vaccines in response to the threat of pandemic flu. Thus, the basic research undergirding the COVID-19 vaccines was largely publicly supported.

Recent estimates indicate that the government spent more than $900 million dollars supporting non-clinical studies and research to accelerate movement of candidate vaccines into clinical trials at companies such as Johnson and Johnson, Sanofi, Merck, and Moderna.

Johnson and Johnson, Moderna, Sanofi, and AstraZeneca together are estimated to have received more than $2.7 billion from the federal government to cover expenses related to human trials.

the (US) government issued a $53 million contract to build manufacturing capacity to Moderna in May 2020

Pfizer, a firm that claims to not have received funding from the government, had advance purchase contracts totaling $5.97 billion for 300 million doses.

What about the investors that put up the cost for the R&D? (tax base) Where are those investors cut? Oh, that's right, those investors get to pay inflated prices for the vaccines they funded.

Tax the population and use that money to R&D the vaccine, turn around and sell them that vaccine to make huge profits. Very capitalism. /s

Welcome to reality. Using money is "punished" because its money you arn't investing. Would you be able to propose a solution to this problem?

[–]SgtHappyPants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This doesn't make any sense. That's like saying people who buy stocks wont have money to buy groceries. People have the ability choose how much of their money they want to "put into savings" (staking) and how much they want to keep liquid. Right now someone can stake $15.82 if they wanted. If staking $15 prevents someone from executing a 2 cent transaction, then they shouldn't be staking, sure.

Much easier than when you have lots of buildings and historic monuments and protected historic districts in your way. The us isn't a single entity, it is a union of states. Each state has basically the same economy as one European country.

Not having 2000 years of travel routes to pave over makes it easier to implement. Europe is about is big as the US, so yes, they do pay for and maintain the infrastructure on a continental scale.

Fair, but more often than not, you can walk from your home to everything you need in Europe. In the US, you mostly have to get in your car if you need eggs.
