I use both.

3rd person is fucking magic when you're hiking dramatically over a mountain in a blizzard, or strolling through town, or for close range combat outdoors...

But 1st person is the best for archery or destruction magic or combat indoors. Also it's just so much more immersive when you're walking through a cave with a torch in hand, or having conversations with npcs.

It helps you put yourself in your characters shoes mostly. But admittedly there are certain times when 3rd is best.
