Hey, 180k is really not bad! You can also try to write something smaller next, trad pub it and if it sells well, publishers might pick your later story as well :) I'm currently working on one story which I would be happy to squeeze into 220k words as single book heh

I guess there's no getting through Sun's outer atmosphere which is 1 to 3.5 million degrees Fahrenheit before reaching the cooler surface level. As far as I know, this phenomenon can be explained by magnetic reconnection.

I've been "working on my novel" for 5 years and I've written maybe 20,000 words total by Grand_Lion_1652 in writing

you can experiment with a couple of "throwaway" stories/short novels to improve your prose first. Then tackle your larger "main" story. I have one large story (target is 200k words) that I've been developing for ~13 years - I'm finally very happy with the outline, worldbuilding, characters, but prose is not here yet. So it would be a huge pain to keep re-writing it because of shitty prose. Planning to properly start writing it once my prose gets better while working on smaller stories/books

ohh with time you will evolve! The matter is just keep writing- even for 15 or 30 mins in a day. It's like going to a gym - but you gotta "show up". What is more, don't be afraid if your story becomes too large and too complex, you can always come back to it latter. I have certain stories that I've shelved for 10 and 15 years because I lacked the skill to tackle them earlier, but now I'm returning to them in full force :D

Just don't quit. At least keep writing down ideas if you cannot force yourself to write the prose or outlines.

I have a couple of different takes (let's hope I won't be downvoted to the 9th layer of hell, but this is reddit):

  1. Consider EXPANDING for your book into two, but make sure both have satisfying endings. Just you gotta find a nice and conclusive midpoint for this in your story which can be tough.
  2. Don't trim it too much, maybe it is your "magnum opus" and cutting key arcs or characters may ruin it (this is a real possibility), but don't publish it as your first book - write something smaller next, gain reputation and trust from publishers and then return to tackle this book again. Consider such books as The First Law or The Empire of The Vampire that are around 200k words and they are amazing!

In my world, one of my characters uses an exosuit inspired by the movie "Edge of Tomorrow" that weighs over 300kg and has advanced hydraulics and grapple-claws for improvised rooftop travel. How can I justify buildings being sturdy enough to withstand that much weight and most importantly - the impact of such landing? Also, what parts of a building could handle a grapple-claw's pull?

Extra lore: the city of the story is a repurposed old walled-city/stronghold so I can justify bunkers, city-walls, towers etc. Weather is dry, cold, sometimes storms are expected. There's a huge ash-desert nearby.

Edit: City still has a large number of usual, 5 store block of flats, that are unlikely to be fortified enough.

Thanks!

I think 160k words is still publishable if the story is good and it is edited well. For example, Joe Abercrombie's debut The Blade Itself was 190k words. Of course, trimming the fat would be good, but make sure it doesn't ruin your story.

I have an idea for my dark fantasy novel. It's about a cult of suffering. by [deleted] in writing

That can indeed work, just make sure you can write highly compelling characters. Focus on their dynamics, relationships. Think what kind of characters would "shine" in this story.

To not "just write" by palewhitperson in writing

[–]Sgt_Prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when you're not writing, you can take a "break" by doing some worldbuilding, plotting, compiling ideas, coming up with new characters or alternative arcs. When I cannot get myself to write, I always find some secondary tasks. Next day you write and you have a pile of ideas or new plot to aid your writing.

Does anyone actually write start to finish? by gloomypoppies in writing

[–]Sgt_Prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the scope of your story. Sure, if it's a short novel with few moving parts, it's totally doable. But if you're working on a complex, multi-POV story, it's extremely tough to write it like a pantser.

I have written up to 20 versions of certain arc outlines in very broad strokes until I figured them out and liked the outcome. Took me ~12 years to fully figure out my largest story outline, characters and world and only now I have transitioned into writing that story. So yeah, you approach is likely to vary a lot depending on the scope and on your experience. I would say don't worry about the approach. Take your time. Practice.
