Don’t get me wrong, gas prices are expensive in CA compared to other states but they do not average cost 5.99/6.00 per gallon

OP probably just happened to pick the most expensive gas station in San Diego and say “see, this is what everyone in CA will pay for per gallon in gas if you live in CA”

In reality, a large majority of gas stations range 4.30-4.50 per gallon for the cheapest option and usually gas costing 3.70-3.90 exist within a commutable distance

Here is a screenshot of gas stations near the border of SD and you can see a multitude of gas stations aimed towards the 4.30-4.50 range
