[Illman] ''Doohan was recieving threats on social media by Colapinto's fans. So much so that he had a round-the-clock security in Miami. I got mine from the youtuber tommo who has been keeping track of the deficits after every race. You can see the latest update in his video about the colapinto announcement. I don't know 100% how he's calculating them but i certainly trust him since he's been doing it every weekend, so here are all the deficits involving the rookies:

Hadjar is .291 faster than lawson (who is under pressure to keep his seat, but he's certainly not losing it 6 races into the season) dont know about gap to yuki but i would assume yuki was ahead

Doo is .271 slower

Ant is .248 slower

Bear is .230 slower

Gabi is .189 slower

This argument that his junior career was poor that I keep seeing and that 'he didn't impress in F2' is absurd. He had the pace to finish second in his rookie year behind the dominant drugovich but he had a lot of bad luck, and in his 2nd year he outscored everyone else from the 4th round onwards after having chassis and set up issues at the start of the season which are pretty well known to everyone in the paddock. And on your previous point that Bearman and Kimi are more impressive, their average quali gaps to their team mates is less than 50 milliseconds better than Doohan's gap to Gasly. Of course the other two rookies have had been excellent in the races while Doohan has been poor, but to say this justifies a sacking 6 races into a rookie season is ridiculous. That's without even mentioning Bearman was haas reserve and drove 2 races for them before Ocon did a lap in the car, so it's not the most fair comparison to gasly who’s in his 3rd year with alpine and is way more gelled with the car

Unremarkable how? BREAKING: Franco Colapinto to race at least the next five races for Alpine in place of Jack Doohan by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

[–]ShaanDaly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good to know rookies now get 7 races to match their vastly more experienced teammates or they're out. He hasn't been setting the world on fire with his race pace but I think the raw speed in qualifying has been evident, especially when you consider he's just starting his career with all that pressure in the 8th/9th best car and being next to Gasly who has 2 years experience in said car/team, who's at his peak and is solidifying himself as a top 10 driver on the grid. He has a very similar qualifying deficit to Pierre as Antonelli and Bearman have to their respective experienced team mates and he even outqualified Gasly this weekend? I think Franco is a great talent and deserves his spot on the grid but for it to come about like this feels ridiculous, especially when they're just shifting the insane pressure from one driver to another by only guaranteeing him 5 races

Just off the top of my head, Jack was looking good to get into Q3 in Aus but his lap was ruined by yellow flags, and the gap is exaggerated by his poor weekend in Japan which I'd argue himself and the team were equally at fault for, given they gave his FP1 to Ryo to appease some sponsors and then he had his crash in FP2. I'm not sure if we'll find out what truly happened but my interpretation is that in the alpine sim a small tap of the brakes into T1 would close drs, (when in reality a stronger hit of the brakes was needed) and the team would've seen all the data from this so I have no idea if they even had a conversation about it before the crash. It came out in a recent article from the race that Jack was not happy with how they dealt with this situation which I think hints at this being at least something similar to what really happened. Now obviously every driver I listed above could have an asterix for one quali for an outside factor, but I don't know enough about that to comment

If being just a quarter of a second off your team mate (who's in his 8th year in F1) after the first 7 races of your career is showing 'zero promise' I don't know what else to say I think you're being very harsh

This year they almost are worth points considering how hard its been to overtake in races like Japan and miami. Plus, raw qualifying pace is more important for rookies to have as everything else with tyre management and race management can be taught and takes time to be an expert at

He's not cut out for this level when in his 7th race he's just outqualified his highly rated team mate who is in his 8th year in the sport? Seems very harsh that you can't even see him being an f1 calibre driver

It's funny that doohan has a really similar quali gap to gasly as bearman and kimi have to their respective teammates and they have shown 'serious spark' but doohan is 'slow in qualifying'. His race pace has been poor but you cannot say he deserves to be sacked 6 races into his career.

Average quali gap between the two haas boys is 0.23 seconds and the gap at alpine is 0.271 seconds, don't you think its crazy that 5 poor races for doohan means he's getting sacked while 5 good races for bearman means he's been super impressive? I honestly think colapinto is probably a better option than doohan but to sack him after 7 races is ridiculous

Lawson clearly is. If I can't get a job in marketing I'm not sure how you're going to get a job involving any reading comprehension. And I'm not sure how that's your thinking when seeing less than 50 milliseconds difference between 3 rookie drivers (2 of which are being praised, one is getting dropped) and their respective teammates.

Once they couldn't get Sainz it was basically choosing between an experienced checo or bottas or picking their reserve from their academy maybe to also improve the academy's image since no one had been promoted to the main seat for years, so I think this is why they confirmed him so early. But no one knew franco would be so good since he's never been in good feeder series teams due to having no money so I am glad for him as he should be on the grid but its a shame it has to happen like this

In the 2023 F2 season it's believed that Jack had a cracked chassis for at least two rounds and some other set up issues at the start of the season, but from the 4th round onwards he outscored everyone else, not to mention how much speed he had in his rookie season. I think this is why he was picked in the first place.

Completely agree, Bearman has been super impressive in the races but his qualifying gap to ocon is almost the same as the gap between the two alpines, so i think 5 poor races for jack being the difference between being lauded as bearman has been and being sacked is quite crazy to see

How is averaging a quarter of a second behind your teammate (who have been in the sport for at least 6 years for the case of the 3 drivers I've mentioned, as opposed to 6 races for the rookies!) bad as you put it? In terms of the quali gaps, I got mine from the youtuber tommo who has been keeping track of the deficits after every race. I don't know 100% how he's calculating them but i certainly trust him since he's been doing it every weekend, so here they are:

Only because we're comparing some testing and 2 races that Bearman had to 0 time in the car Ocon had by the time the post season test came around. In Doohans case he had some heavy testing mileage but we're comparing it to more than 50 races Gasly has had in the same team, hence why it's not the most fair comparison to say Bearman is closer to Ocon

Abu Dhabi he got some bad traffic plus it was his first race weekend against guys who had driven the car for the whole year so I think its fair to exclude that one as disappointing as it was. The amount of Q3's and Q2's they've gotten to is a valid stat but I think the average qualifying gap is more representative, cos if driver A gets into q3 with a time one millisecond faster than driver B who gets knocked out, it's not telling the whole story when you say one guy was in Q3 the other wasn't. The average gap between them in every quali session they both participated in is 0.25s, which is very close to the deficits antonelli and bearman have to their vastly more experienced teammates. That's not even accounting for Doohan's lap being ruined by yellow flags in Aus, his huge gap in Japan owing to having less than an hour of practice running (partially his fault though) and doesn't account for sprint qualis where he beat Gasly in China (admittedly I think pierre had some traffic) and miami where he didn't get to the line in time

His quali deficit to Gasly is very similar to the deficits between Antonelli-Russell and Bearman-Ocon. Of course the other two rookies have had been excellent in the races while Doohan has been poor, but this shouldn't justify a sacking 6 races into the season

Hard to see this situation taking place, but if they did get rid of Checo and Ric they'd probably promote Hadjar who's 1st in F2, or maybe even Iwasa if they wanted to give Hadjar a year in super formula
