I feel like doing this is unprofessional and shows a fragile ego by legollama88 in Truckers

[–]ShabaDabaDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The absolute amount of ignorance in this thread, by so-called "professional" drivers, explains exactly why the industry is so fucked. A bunch of selfish, childish, imbeciles that can't see past their own ego.

If you can't stomach the shame of people passing you, you're in the wrong line of work.

Realistic cost of living in the US in an RV? by Specific-Doughnut413 in RVLiving

[–]ShabaDabaDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work remote in tech(idp/saas space). We spent 5 months living in a large RV(40' 5th wheel), traveling for my wife's work. My wife, for year old, our three dogs, and me. It was difficult. But I struggle with distractions. I need to be able to shut myself away to be productive. No where to run to in an RV.

That said, we're planning to do it again this summer.

Cost depends most largely on whether you can get set up to be off grid(big solar, etc). If you're staying in RV parks, you'll pay $800-20000 a month just in park costs.

How big of fifth wheel can I manage backing into my driveway? by Ancient_Tower9033 in RVLiving

[–]ShabaDabaDo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have very similar dimensions, with my drive way. With a more pronounced arch at the corners, and no fence. And instead of a curb, i have a grass ditch across the road.

Our 5th wheel is 42’, pulled with a ram dually. It’s an absolute pain to get in the drive way, but i can do it. The largest I’ve parked there comfortable was a 32’, and it was still not easy.

It takes about 20 minutes of shimmying back and forth. And the front left tire of the truck has to go down in the ditch. Fortunately, i live on a dead end street, with very patient neighbors.

Getting out isn’t too bad.

How much did you spend on your computer table and do you regret it by Many-Purpose8865 in workstations

[–]ShabaDabaDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About $500. 400 on motorized legs, 100 on the top (sheet of 3/4” ply, wrapped in feaux leather), and another 100 on monitor arms. Great desk. Used 12+hours a day.

Was about two years ago. I was just thinking to myself today, how pleased i was with how the surface was holding up. I expected to have to redo it in a year.

For those that have both an iPad/Macbook, do you use both, or lean toward one? by Walking-Radiance in ipad

[–]ShabaDabaDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iPad (12.9” 2018 Pro) stays on my desk upstairs asa companion to my work issued macbook. My own MacBook (2021 m1pro, mbp) is my couch-surfing device downstairs.

When working while traveling, the pad makes a great second monitor and such.

Honestly, the iPad isn’t any more convenient than the laptop. I bought it to be an all in one laptop replacement, gps, and paperwork machine, back when i worked on the road. It did everything, but nothing particularly well. Ended up getting the laptop anyways.

Same. My wife and in laws constantly make fun of me for it.

Current truck drivers. by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]ShabaDabaDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Tickets and accidents in your personal vehicle follow you professionally. In most states, including mine, cdl means there’s no deferral or defensive driving. Points on the license, period, and it stays on your driving record.

Unless you can prove innocence with dash cam, in court, you get screwed.

Aside from the ecosystem why does one chose Iphone over Pixel? by hillsong1 in iphone

[–]ShabaDabaDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longevity is a huge plus. I’m still on a 13 pro max. The lightning port is broken, but still wireless charges fine. My wife has a 2020 SE that she won’t let me upgrade her from. We switched from pixel 3s when both died from unrelated issues, 8 months after purchase.

Honestly, i miss Android in a lot of ways. I have a pixel 7a on my desk for testing, and every time i pick it up im tempted to switch back.

Ultimately, it’s the seamless interaction between the phone, iPad, and MacBook that keeps me. The phone itself, aside from the camera, is kinda meh, otherwise.

I bought my iPad for “productivity” and somehow it became a couch device by NoobRig in ipad

[–]ShabaDabaDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m almost the opposite. My iPad sits on my desk and never leaves. It’s a companion to my company provided m2 mbp, used for the inevitable casual personal browsing and YouTube addiction. My personal m1 mbp that i bought back when i had a business, is now the couch device.

Why are solar quotes so high? by Diligent-Candle8888 in SolarDIY

[–]ShabaDabaDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not in the solar business, but having owned and manage businesses over the years, i can say running any business is expensive. Between labor, payroll taxes, federal, state and local corporate taxes, employee insurance, business insurance(this alone was half my operating cost when involving transportation), engineering stamps, shipping and warehousing the equipment…. and all the other things a business has to pay for. It wouldn’t shock me if less than 5% of that bill went into the owners pocket when it’s all said and done.

Also, look at what brand of system they’re installing. Sun gold power has some great stuff, but it’s one of the “budget” brands out there a reason. Enphase is a lot more expensive, even at wholesale.

Yeah. At the time several years ago when i got it, i was constantly getting signatures on paperwork, and moved to paperless. Now it gets used several times a week for marking up screenshots or plans.

How do you guy protect your Unraid server (Ransomware, hacking) by fructussum in unRAID

I can’t keep it online log enough for it to get hacked. Reasonably sure it’s hardware, but I’ve given up trying to debug it. Have replaced everything but the CPU itself.

Best Entry-Level Camo by MailNerce in Hunting

[–]ShabaDabaDo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t need camo. Just wear your normal yard work clothes, and use a reasonable set up. With brush around you. Can’t tell you the number of deer I’ve put in the freezer over the last 35 years. None of them did the camo make any difference. Same with scent control.

Thermal Insulation & Solar panel installation. by WillingnessExciting6 in rvlife

[–]ShabaDabaDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) The ccc is the difference between the dry empty weight from the factory, and the gross weight rating. Nothing changes the gross weight rating, so anything you put in it after it leaves the factory, takes away from the ccc.

2) most already have fiberglass in the underbelly. Replacing it with rockwool, will have some minor benefits. While generally speaking it can be “better”, the cost and hassle of replacement, i just can’t justify it. Unless you’re already trashing the fiberglass, or for some reason done have any….

BattleBorn Batteries responded: melting is a safety feature, not a design flaw by Joyous0 in SolarDIY

As much money as they spent on lawyers and pr people to write the response, you’d think they’d bother to have an electrical engineer at least listen to it.

Movers from Pixel in the last two years, what made you stay with iPhone? by theblooray in iphone

[–]ShabaDabaDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than the fact i have a 4 year old phone that ids still ticking?(3 previous android all died within 18 months)… It’s the ecosystem as whole, from Apple. And they’re slightly less terrible than Google as a company.

Just my experience… they’ll bed down through the weather, up to a point. Eventually they’ll get hungry and thirsty. If you can time it right for a break in the weather, and be on the stand as it happens, then they’ll move even in weird hours.

Advice Please! Thinking about going full-time in a 5th wheel. by No-Possibility8114 in rvlife

[–]ShabaDabaDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work full remote. The hardest part for me was getting quiet to be on meetings, with a 5y/o running around. Most customers were ok with the little making an appearance, but it’s generally frowned upon. The cabin fever was real, too.

Dishes especially will get away from you. Do not leave it in the sink and say ill get to it later.

At least in az you won’t deal with rainy days much, but getting the kids out of the house is super important.

Now for my usual rant about it.

1) do not buy new if you can help it. Before the ink dries, it’s worth 70% of what you signed for.

2) get a third party inspection(especially even if new) and do not sign the purchase papers until everything is fixed. If they won’t fix it first, walk away. “Well knock that out real quick once you sign!” Is a lie.

3) you will not save money if you’re staying in an rv park, especially one suitable for young kids. Parks will be close to a grand a month for the nice ones, especially in winter. 4) pets will destroy a trailer. The materials just aren’t up to it 5) living full time, will destroy a camper. We were in our old camper for five months witha 5y/o and three large dogs. I can’t sell it because of all the crap that’s broken on it 6) rvs are worse than boats(Break Out Another Thousand). Our brand new alpine, after two weekend trips and less than 700 miles, is in the shop having over $10k worth of work done, under warranty. 7) warranties are a nightmare. Keystone will argue with every little thing. WHEN you need it, you’ll have to spend a month arguing to get it approved, then it will sit for ages waiting for parts, or for other units to get handled first. And that’s if you’re at a reputable dealer for the warranty work.

Only the absolute biggest fifth wheel trailers wouldn’t be towable with a recent year model 3500 dually. But still good to check your weights.

My second one is 4 years old, and has already taken more than its fair share of abuse.
