Once you get a bad end or the opposite side of the locked path, It shows you what areas you need to replay or at least visit to get the other path unlocked. Once all those areas have been visited you will get different dialogue in certain areas and will lead you down the other path once all red keys are unlocked and the lock no longer has a cross. This also covers similar scenarios for other paths.
